    1. Re: Johanna Horne
    2. Hi Pam, It may be that Johanna's parents were non-conformists, therefore they wouldnt appear in any of the OPR's. This could indeed make it look as though she didnt exist. The National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh have a collection of non-conformist sources although off-hand I couldnt say what exists, it may be worth e-mailing them and asking what exists for Caithness and Wick inparticular. I've found them to be very helpful in the past. One source that you may have overlooked are the records of the East India Company themselves. Terrick Fitzhugh in his 'Dictionary of Genealogy' notes that the "Company's records are a uniquely rich source of biographical material" the records include baptisms etc in India (it may well be that she was born over there). Fitzhugh states that they were to be held at the British Library from 1998 so a search of the British Library catalogue may help. They hold biographical information of a great number of people apparently, and with John being an officer there should be a fair chance of finding some information. As you are so far away I'm afraid unless you can find any information on the Company in books or over the internet you may have to hire a researcher in London. Hope this helps Regards Sara Donaldson in Caithness

    1. HORNE/CAMPBELL
    2. Pam Hislop
    3. Hi, For decades I have been stumped re my HORNE ancestors. My G-G Grandmother was Johanna Campbell HORNE. On every document I have she is stated to have been born at Wick (or near), Caithness. Her parents being John HORNE and Mary CAMPBELL. By the time she married in 1846, Edinburgh (to John HISLOP) she is said to be residing in Edinburgh. She died in New Zealand. The information at the Early Settlers Museum (which was supplied by her) states that her father was an Officer in the East India Company and her birthdate is stated as 28 August 1821. Now you think this would be easy????? If I didn't know better, I'd swear she didn't exist!!! I have searched the OPRs, online, using every trick I can think of but have not been able to find her or her parents! I would be grateful for any offers of help or any clues for where to look next. 1. SUTHERLAND-GUNN [Re: Update on "Scottish Documents" Site]
    2. Frances Bishop
    3. Many thanks to Ken for the update. I found the following notation, which could be the clue I've been looking for: "SUTHERLAND, John - 11/3/1861 - Farmer at Achnahavish, Braemore, parish of Latheron, husband of Isabella GUNN / Wick Sheriff Court." I'm praying this man is John SUTHERLAND born Kildonan who married a widow in Glutt of Braemore (bride's name unknown). The will is not available yet. In the meantime, can anyone tell me anything about Isabella GUNN and her husband John SUTHERLAND, the farm or Achnahavish? 1. George Groat and Mary Jessie Sinclair
    2. Pam Russell
    3. Hello Listers, I have just begun researching my Groat/Sinclair families and was hoping there might be some connections out there. My gg grandparents were George Groat b. May 1837 Scotland and Mary Jessie Sinclair b. June 1841 Scotland. They were married about 1861 probably in Scotland. They were in Capetown, South Africa and then back to Scotland. They immigrated to the US sometime between 1865-1870 and settled in Boston, Massachusetts. George was a carpenter. They had the following children: Annie Groat b. abt 1862 South Africa Jessie Groat b. abt 1865 South Africa Isabella Groat b. abt 1868 Scotland George Groat b. abt 1871 Massachusetts Elizabeth Groat b. abt 1873 Massachusetts John Groat b. abt 1878 Massachusetts Emelina Groat b. abt 1883 Massachusetts Christina Groat b. abt 1886 Massachusetts I am assuming they lived in Caithness because my mom always said we were descendents of John O'Groat. That's about all I know right now, but if anyone sees any possible connections, please let me know. I will start by trying to find them in the 1851 census and go from there. Any suggestions welcome. 3. Hello Listers, In regards the comments of late baptisms of children & how an Earl of Caithness baptised his at a much later date. These comments are an example of what you should not do, that is just use indexes & not go back to the source from which that index was made. The Earls children are a classic example, he was first cousin to my 3xgreatgrandmother. From Canisbay Register of Christenings where a section is inserted & the following is written. " Letter from The Right Honorable the Earl of Caithness to the Session Clerk of Canisbay. Sir, Finding that none of the names of my family have been inserted in the Parochial Record of their respective baptisms. I have to request that you will insert either in one or more pages of your Record at the date hereof the copy hereto annexed of their names and the dates of their respective births copied here from one of the book binders leaves of the Family Bible of Barrogil Castle in which each of their names was regularly insertred at the time of their baptism - to which it may also prefer that you prefix this my request as explanatory of the occasion thereof, mentioning that I have also of this date sent a similar copy to be inserted in the Parochial Register at Wick as they are in some measure connected also with this Parish by my estate therein. And be so good as to send me a note of the dues of Registration, both of this my request and of the following copy of my family extracted as I have said and I will give orders for payment. I am Sir, your most humble servant, signed Caithness Barrogil Castle 21st October 1817. Extract od a Register in the Family bible of Barrogil Castle. 1. Sir James Sinclair of Mey, Baronet, now Earl of Caithness was married to Miss Jane Campbell second daughter of Colonel Alexander Campbell of Balcardine at Thurso Castle upon the 23rd day of December 1783. 2.
