Hi. I've just started working on the Craig family tree. It starts with William Craig marrying Janet McBeath at Reiss in 1718. They had a son William who married Ann Coghill in 1745, who had a son William who married Barbara Taylor in 1781 who had a son James who married Catherine Sutherland in 1828 who had a son William who married Elizabeth Waite in 1863. These two are my great grandparents. I'm looking for fellow decendants who share this line. I'd greatly appreciate hearing from you and sharing informatition. Thanks kindly, (William) Richard Craig Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Thanks to all the Listers who responded to my question a week ago, both on- and off-List. Responses are still coming in and I was waiting to see what turned up before letting the Lists know. But I think I can now offer this summary: Like most of you, I'm sure, I have seen the phrase "eodem die" in baptism and marriage registers ever since I started research 35 years ago. I deduced that this meant "on the same day", and I assumed that "die" was "day". But recently, in reading the baptism OPR for Kirkwall, Orkney, I found an expression new to me: "Nata eodem", together with expressions like "nata 12th" or "N 10" etc. I assume that this is providing the date of birth, distinct from the date of baptism. I also assume that "Nata eodem" means "born the same day as the baptism". But the word "die" is always missing, so ... my original question was "does 'eodem' mean "on the same day" even without the "die"?" Barry - on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, said: By typing in "eodem Latin" in Google I was led to : < http://www.xmission.com/~nelsonb/latin.htm > -A Latin Primer which tells: eodem anno = in the same year eodem die = on the same day eodem mense = in the same month Pam Arnold said: My trusty Latin dictionary says that 'eodem', an adverb, means 'to the same place, purpose, or person'. 'at the same time' = 'eodem tempore' or 'simul' Couldn't find 'on the same day'. Susan said: GENERAL LATIN VOCABULARY & ABBREVIATIONS Terms marked with an asterisk* are ones that tend to appear a lot and can be hard to find in standard dictionaries. For the information of Listers who do not subscribe to Scottish Documents newsletters, I have pasted below a message I received today: ************** www.scottishdocuments.com update - December 2002 User demand triggers latest update of 27,000 wills. Waiting times slashed!! In response to the numerous requests of our users to make images of the wills available sooner and faster ScottishDocuments.com has harnessed information technology to link images to their index entries by an automatic process. All this means that you can now can buy documents from the following courts:- Dundee Wills, Inventories and Confirmations, 1832-1875 (SC45/31/1-26) Elgin Wills, 1823-1875 (SC26/38/1-12) Elgin Inventories 1824-1875 (SC26/39/1-12) Jedburgh Wills, Inventories and Confirmations, 1827-1875 (SC62/44/1-59) Kirkwall Wills, Inventories and Confirmations, 1827-1875 (SC11/38/1-8) Kirkwall Wills and Confirmations, 1824-1875 (SC11/41/1) Lerwick Inventories, 1827-1875 (SC12/36/1-6) Lerwick Wills and Confirmations, 1859-1875 (SC12/37/1-3) Nairn Inventories, SC31/35/1 1839-1875 (SC31/35/1) Nairn Wills, 1839-1875 (SC31/34/1) Paisley Wills, Inventories and Confirmations 1824-1875 (SC58/42/1-43) Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of these links, but there is no substitute for human input! Our linkers check each index entry for accuracy and add a detailed description of the document. They will continue with this important work over the next year. But this exciting new development means that months of waiting have been eliminated. In the meantime, you will find that these entries have less supplementary information about the documents themselves. In addition, manually-linked documents from the following courts are now available: Glasgow Sheriff Court Inventories & Settlements 1804-1875 (SC36/51/1-69) Dumfries Commissary Court 1624-1823 (CC5/6/1-21) Dunblane Commissary Court 1539-1659 (CC6/5/1-10) Lauder Commissary Court 1561-6, 1634-41, 1652-3 (CC15/5/1-3) Moray Commissary Court 1684-1827 (CC16/4/1-10, CC16/5/1-3) Peebles Commissary Court 1681-99, 1785-1824 (CC18/3/1, CC18/4/1-5) Ross Commissary Court 1802-24 (CC19/1-2) Stirling Sheriff Court inventories 1809-1831 (SC67/36/1-12) These new additions mean that latest version of www.scottishdocuments.com now includes high-quality colour images of over 200,000 Scottish wills, testaments and inventories for sale at just 5GBP per document. I am hoping someone can find a marriage for my gt.gt.gt.grandparents, Charles Henderson and Margaret Scott. Their children were born in Sunderland ,County Durham,England between 1804 and 1819, so one would have expected a marriage c. 1803, but there seems no record of one in Sunderland.Their second son James Scott Henderson(1806-1892) was a tailor, but I don't know his father's profession.Family tradition says the Hendersons came from Thurso, Caithness. Any suggestions please? Mary N.
Hi everyone, I am hoping that someone out there is related to Hugh Farquhar or MacKay and his wife Margaret Sutherland. Margaret was aborn about 1759 and died in 1855 at New Reay and I think was buried in New Reay Cemetary. Her fathers name was William Sutherland and her mother was Elizabeth MacDonald. Hugh is a mystery. His seven children all used the name Farquhar until they reached adulthood and then took the name Mackay. Hugh appears to have used both surnames as well. Can anyone help? Cheers. Pat

Pam Russell in Atlanta, Georgia -----Original Message----- From: Pam Russell Sent: 08 September 2002 06:02 To: SCT-CAITHNESS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: George Groat and Mary Jessie Sinclair Hello Listers, I have just begun researching my Groat/Sinclair families and was hoping there might be some connections out there. My gg grandparents were George Groat b. May 1837 Scotland and Mary Jessie Sinclair b. June 1841 Scotland. They were married about 1861 probably in Scotland. They were in Capetown, South Africa and then back to Scotland. They immigrated to the US sometime between 1865-1870 and settled in Boston, Massachusetts. George was a carpenter. They had the following children: Annie Groat b. abt 1862 South Africa Jessie Groat b. abt 1865 South Africa Isabella Groat b. abt 1868 Scotland George Groat b. abt 1871 Massachusetts Elizabeth Groat b. abt 1873 Massachusetts John Groat b. abt 1878 Massachusetts Emelina Groat b. abt 1883 Massachusetts Christina Groat b. abt 1886 Massachusetts I am assuming they lived in Caithness because my mom always said we were descendents of John O'Groat. That's about all I know right now, but if anyone sees any possible connections, please let me know. I will start by trying to find them in the 1851 census and go from there. Any suggestions welcome. Hello Does anyone have any WRIGHT connections? Any at all? I am trying to piece together the Wright people that I have colleced, so any/all connections to a WRIGHT would be of great help. I feel that they all have to be connected somehow. My family of Wrights are spread from Thurso to Wick and all places in-between, (including Orkney) so I am not concentrating on just one town/parish. Thank you. Susan Simmons (Wright) Warkworth NZ ________________________ Susan Simmons searching for: Wright, Hughes & Kellett in India Wright, Donaldson, Green & Bain in Caithness & Orkney
