    1. Re: James Bremner
    2. Hi David, While I'm not researching the Bremners are you aware of the booklet 'James Bremner Wreck raiser' ? It was written by John Mowat and is part of the Caithness Notebooks series. I'm afraid I can't tell you when it was published as my copy has no date, but it was published by John Humphries at Caithness Books in Thurso, sometime I think in the late 1960's or early 1970's (the prices are in shillings and pence). It's a fantastic little book that you may be able to find on the second hand market, or perhaps through inter-library loan. I doubt it will give you any more family information (i.e names and dates) but it does give a wonderful insight into the man and his work. Hope this is of some use Regards Sara Donaldson

    1. New to List
    2. David Pike
    3. Hello Caithness List I have recently begun tracing back my wife's Scottish lines which lead me here. Her great great grandmother was Christina BREMNER, daughter of engineer & shipbuilder James BREMNER (1784-1856) of Wick and Christian SINCLAIR. These in turn seem to be the respective offspring of James & Janet BREMNER of Wick, & James SINCLAIR m. Christina BAIN. Is anyone else researching any of these folk? Many thanks David Pike Lowestoft Suffolk UK

    3. And still looking for Christian OALSON married to William SHAND in Latheron 1827. Christian's father was Donald OALSON (but which one?) William's father, I don't know, was he even from Latheron? How do people get on researching further back than 1740 when apparently the parish register began? Can anyone shed any light on this family? Michelle. We do not stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

    1. Campbells from Calder
    2. Hello, I am new to the list, and was wondering if there is anyone connected to the Campbell family from the area around Calder and Halkirk. They left Caithness in 1839 for Canada. The first I have any record of is Donald Campbell, born circa 1795 (according to his tombstone) and no further information, who married (1) Isabell Bruce (some records say Isabell Grant) b ?; children from this marriage John born circa 1826, Barbara b cir 1828 and Robert born circa 1829. He married (2) Isabell Campbell, born circa 1814 (also according to her tombstone), no further record on her either. Children from this marriage while in Scotland: Colin, Thomas, Christian (Christina) and Isabell, all born between 1830 and 1838. Is there anyone on this list that ties in with this family? I would like to find the parents of Donald and Isabell, and continue the line back if possible. Thanks! K Campbell

I have no further information on JAMES gfather's siblings and can find no record of the origins, or death, of his father. 1. Sutherland - Wick, Caithness
    2. TerriK
    3. Hello, Newbie here hoping someone on this list might also be searching for the following family: James SUTHERLAND b. April 1709 in Wick, Caithness to father: John/Jon Sutherland. I believe James could be one and the same as the James Sutherland who was later married to Mary Tuedell (various spellings)and whose children were born on Holm & Paplay, Orkney, Scotland beginning 1729. I could be wrong though. No proof, just going on matching dates, family names, later family history etc. James SUTHERLAND b. April 1709 had siblings, though I don't know the mother's name/s as only the father John/Jon is listed. The other siblings are: Isobel SUTHERLAND b. April 1710, Wick Helen SUTHERLAND b. April 1710, Wick (could be an error, but twins do run in this family) Mary SUTHERLAND b. Jan 1714/15, Wick Francis SUTHERLAND b. May 1716, Wick George SUTHERLAND b. May 1716, Wick (as above) Margaret SUTHERLAND b. April 1717, Wick Then I believe there was a change of spouse and location for whatever reason with the following children born: Hector SUTHERLAND b. Feb 1720/21, Wattan John SUTHERLAND b. Jan 1724/25, Wattan Alexander SUTHERLAND b. May 1726, Wattan Bessie SUTHERLAND b. Jan 1727/28, Wattan I have a strong belief that all these children were born to the same father even though they have different mothers and are born in two different places. I have found evidence to link a son of James b. 1709 with his two younger uncles Hector and John born in the early 1720's. They appear to have travelled together to Banffshire. This was longer than I intended. A bit hard to explain complicated families. If anyone has read this far and believes they can be of help or have a connection, I'd love to hear from you. More than willing to share anything I have with others. Cheers, Terri Stewart Keck Toowoomba. Qld. Australia.
