    1. Sutherland, Battle of Neville's Cross, Re: Henderson
    2. Hi, I looked far and wide for Henderson with Sutherland in my notes..I know I saw it..will keep an eye out for it. Here is something that may help and add a question to Clan Sutherland researchers: I have Neville great grandmother(Wells, England)..and Nevilles married to Southard's twice....(the Colonies) William Sutherland, 5th Earl of Sutherland; fought at Scottish defeat by English of Neville's Cross 17 Oct 1346. m. 1st between 3 Aug and 28 Sept 1345, Margaret(dc.1346), sis of DAVID 11(who by charter in1345 raised the Earldom of Sutherland, to a regality (jurisdiction with quasi-regal powers, though this lapsed on the 5th Ealr's death). John Campbell is mentioned in this family too. From : Burke's Peerage and Baronetage, pp.2270 Cordially, Susie From The Colonies

    1. Re: [Petrie-Scotland] re:Kincardine list
    2. Hi Tricia, I read with interest the PETRIES on your recent email. I'm trying to research my great grandmother Catherine PETRIE, born in Wick abt. 1855. She married in Glasgow in 1872, her husband was Andrew MOYES from Fife. On her marriage certificate she listed both of her parents as deceased, George PETRIE, Blacksmith and Elizabeth CAMPBELL, both of Wick. An Aunt of mine who lives in Canada has told me that we have SUTHERLANDS in our family tree.....in fact, she visited with them in Edinburgh just after the Second World War.... I can't find any birth certificate of Catherine PETRIE in Caithness, and the only record of her that I've found is in the 1861 census where she is listed as a servant (cowherd) at the farm of the BREMNER family named "Barnyards," she is listed as 12 years of age on this census report. Any help linking her to the PETRIES on your email would be appreciated! George Weston Suisun, CA

    2. Hello, I believe that I have something on a Henderson,,that goes quite a ways back in years in Caithness with Hendersons's and Clan Sutherland's.. Is it possible that your Henderson may be of Old Norse descent, as well? I will return with a possible Henderson with Clan Sutherland. Cordially, Susie Pl-Southard

    3. Hi Stuart, No reason to think my Janet HENDERSON is yours, but I've got one with suspected Halkirk, Caithness origin. Mine was born c.1780, married Angus BANNERMAN in Kildonan, Sutherland 1802. Six kids born in Kildonan, then moved (back) to Halkirk where 2 more children born. That's the sum total of my information thus far. When I stop being so lazy, I'll order the marriage certificate and find out her parents' names and birth place (I hope). Joanne ----- Original Message ----- From: Stuart Saunders To: SCT-CAITHNESS-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, March 10, 2003 4:51 PM Subject: HENDERSON Hello All, I am looking for any information about William HENDERSON, a farmer, and his wife Margaret (nee BAIN). 1. Re: HENDERSON
    2. Hi Stuart, You ask if anyone is researching the BAIN and HENDERSON names from Caithness (Wick). I'm researching these names but can't say that I have any information that would be of any help to you! However, in the hope that there might be some connection, I'll list the meager information that I have. My Great Grandmother was Catherine PETRIE of Wick, and she was born there abt. 1850. Her oldest daughter, my Grandmother, was Isabella BAIN MOYES, born in 1872 in Glasgow, the same year Catherine PETRIE married Andrew MOYES, a mason or tilesetter married Catherine. After Isabella BAIN MOYES married John SWINTON FARQUHAR in Glasgow in 1892, she named her first child George HENDERSON FARQUHAR. As you can see, these relatively common names BAIN and HENDERSON were apparently family names in the Scot's naming tradition and my mother always told us that our family originated in Caithness and the Orkneys, but I've never even found Catherine PETRIE's birth records in Wick, or any information about her parents, George PETRIE and Elizabeth CAMPBELL, except for their names on her marriage certificate! So it is with this very slight information I respond to family names in the Caithness site hoping to make a connection. George Weston Suisun, CA

My Mother's Mother was Elizabeth Swanson born 1892 in Scarsfskerry Dunnet and her family had been there from around 1855 and before that in Mey Canisbay. There does not seem to be any link to your Swansons but one of my grandmothers old friends. I think he may have been a school friend, was a Geordie Manson who had a croft somewhere south of Castletown. I have wonderful memories of a holiday there about fifty years ago. If there is any connection with your Mansons I have a couple of very old photos of it. Regards Derek McDonald Edinburgh

    3. The statistical accounts refers to a colony of highlanders on Walls Orkney (see below). Does anyone know anything about this colony? Where was the colony located? Family names? Etc? The 1891 census shows a Beth Nicholson 82 years old at Bessier who was born Reay Caithness and speaks Gaelic and English. Could she be a remnant of that colony? Or was there a lot of movement between Orkney and Caithness? Darryl From The Statistical Accounts of Scotland – 1791-99 Written by Rev. Mr. James Bremmer; Parish of Walls and Flota, Orkney: "What accounts for this increase of 71, is the settlement of a colony of Highlanders, who had been forced to emigrate from Strathnaven, where their farms were converted into sheep pasture. These people, it would appear, had been comfortably situated in their former residence, as they all brought with them, to this place, a very considerable flock in horses, cows, sheep, and goats, and also in grains. As to all other property, every man of them might truly say, Omnia mea mecum porto. Their household furniture must therefore be described negatively. No bed, no table, no chair. These the highlander does not reckon among the necessaries of life, as he can make the earth serve him for all three. In his shealing, composed of earth and a few sticks, you find no other furniture than a few dishes for his milk, and a barrel for his meal: so true in fact, as well as philosophy, is the maxim, Natura contenta eft paucia." --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 2. Dear Jenny, My Jane DALLAS (aka Jean DORRACH, DORROCH, DARRAH, DURROCH) died in 1855 at age 59 in Wick and this would put her birth at about 1795. However she was born in Glasgow, not Caithness. She married Donald PETRIE (farmer) on June 10, 1816 in Glasgow. She had her first and second children, George (1817), Jean (1819) in Glasgow and the moved (back?) to Wick in time for the birth of her third child Margaret on 30 Apr. 1819. On her death certificate it said she lived in Wick for 30 years, but it must have been more like 35 years. She is buried in the churchyard at Wick. Her parents were Donald DALLAS (seaman) and ?DALLAS? (ms unknown). This information came from Norma Thain the list owner of the RootsWeb PETRIE-Scotland site and was taken from Scottish Records office Ref. 1855 Wick (Landward) entry 79. I don't know if this helps and I have some further information on her children, etc.... two of whom ended up in Australia, one courtesy of the Crown and the other following along to be of help when her brother was released from prison!
