This is my fist posting to this list as I am a newcomer. My gr. gr. grandfather, Alexander LAWRIE/LAURIE/LOWRIE was born in Banffshire, in Gellymill, in 1781. His parents were John LAURIE/LAWRIE/LOWRIE and Janet/Jannet/Janette/Jeanette SMITH. His siblings are believed to be: George b. 1790 Helen b. 1792 William b. 1784 John b 1789 Janet b 1786 Alexander served with the Sutherland Highlanders, and was stationed as a Sgt. in South Africa in the Settlement of Good Hope, where he was married to an Elizabeth Burgess, said to have originated in London (not proven). I have his letter of certification of marriage at this date, Apr 9th 1814, to this lady. He apparently went from S.A. to Ireland, where he and Elizabeth were parents to two boys born in Ireland. Alexander at this point became a Magistrate with the Royal Irish Constabulary. I have documentation of this. The date of this was 1828. There must have been children born in S.A. too, but I do not know where to look for a record of them. I am hoping that there might be someone related to one of the siblings, or someone that could advise me where to look for information regarding the possibility of children born in S.A. Also, he must have retired from this regiment, so there must be some records somewhere. Any suggestions or help greatly appreciated. Thank you. Tish from BC Canada [email protected]
