    3. Hi Anne, Thanks for these sites. I must try to visit Colleonard some day! James SIMPSON of Colleonard rebuilt the Banff distillery at Inverboyndie in 1863. http://www.royalmilewhiskies.com/category.asp?cat_id=D_BANF Operational: 1863 - 1983 Region: Speyside Neighbours: Glenglassaugh, Glen Deveron Address: Inverboyndie, Banff, Banffshire, AB45 2JJ. Last known owner: Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd. The first (Speyside) distillery by the name of Banff was built in 1824. In 1863 James Simpson jr. built a new distillery on the same spot to replace the old one, but after a fire it had to be rebuilt again in 1877. In WWII the distillery was damaged by a bomb. It was finally closed and demolished in 1983, apart from the last remaining warehouses that were demolished after yet another fire that plagued Banff on April 11, 1991. Here is more from a site devoted to the silent distilleries of Scotland http://www.maltmadness.com/silent.html It sounds as though the Banff product is a fine rarity so if anyone has a bottle ?? it will be worth a fortune. Best Wishes, Jane very distant relation of James SIMPSON http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=kosmoid ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anne Burgess" <anne.burgess@btinternet.com> To: <SCT-BANFFSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 10, 2006 10:34 AM Subject: Re: [Banff] 1855 Banff birth, Simpson >> Jane - here is the Birth you requested from 1855. 3. Re Banff Single Malt. Yes it can still be purchased without too much trouble. A couple of years ago, Edradour Distillery outside Pitlochry had bottles for sale, pride of place in their shop - if I remember for about £100. I made appropriate noises, and I was offered a taster from the open bottle that appeared as if by magic from under the counter. Very nice too! Even if it was 11am, and I and my brother-in-law had just knocked back the standard free dram of Edradour from the tour, plus the wife's, plus the extra spare one.... What a nice outing that was.....I think. Regards Howard Geddes
