I've had this family 'on file' for some while now, and Ruth's recent offer of their son's death certificate details has rekindled my interest in identifying Elspet GEDDES below. On 3-Jul-1803 in Fordyce James COWIE and Elspet GEDDES "both in this parish" married. Their family (per IGI) were, all bpt Fordyce: George COWIE 4-May-1804 James COWIE 11-Feb-1806 Ann COWIE 9-Mar-1808 William COWIE 1-Sep-1810 Isabel COWIE 1-Jul-1813 Questions: - can anyone provide the OPR details of the COWIE baptisms? I'd like to know where they lived as well as their witnesses. - can anyone provide the location of the 1851 census entry bk4 pg 5 (see below)? - has anybody got anything more on this family that might help me identify Elspet GEDDES? George COWIE died in 1862 at Carestown in Deskford: "George COWIE single died 5-12-1862 8.45pm Carestown, aged 58, of --- several years; parents James COWIE farmer (deceased) and Elspet COWIE ms GEDDES (deceased); inf: William STEVENSON brother in law present." - 1862-Deskford-24. I've found George COWIE in the 1851 Index, in Fordyce age 46 b Fordyce (bk 4 pg 5). If anyone's interested, the IGI has enabled me to also identify with confidence the brother-in-law William STEVENSON. I'm sure this will be verifiable at the GRO. This is the family: William Stevenson & Anne Cowie marr: 22-5-1836 Banff, Banff (M111474) - family all in Banff, Banffshire (C111474) parents William Stevenson & Ann Cowie: - Alexander Stevenson Birth: 06 DEC 1839 Christening: 26 DEC 1839 Banff, Banff - William Stevenson Birth: 08 NOV 1841 Christening: 14 DEC 1841 Banff, Banff - James Stevenson Birth: 23 DEC 1845 Christening: 13 JAN 1846 Banff, Banff - Elsie Ann Stevenson Birth: 27 JUN 1848 Christening: 25 AUG 1848 Banff, Banff And into the bargain, this could well be James Stevenson above: James Stevenson Birth: , , Scotland Parents: William Stevenson & Anna Cowie Bertha M. Thixon Birth: , , Kentucky Parents: Unknown Marriage: 16 MAY 1892 , Allegan, Michigan (M017163) In 1881, son William is at Careston Deskford as William STEINSON, with wife and family. This clinches it for me. All this from a single certificate! Thank you Ruth. Regards Howard Geddes
