On early birth records of Robert's children, Robert is listed as a merchant and then later as a farmer. Finally, he is listed as a Custom and Excise Officer. One record says he is Mr. Robert Smith, merchant of Smithfield. According to some of national archives of Scotland, Robert was made bankrupt in 1804, which may explain the changes in occupation.
