    3. Here is some info about a DUNCAN family that originated in Alvah. They are not the subjects of my own research at present, and this is all the info. I have. But perhaps someone else might find it useful. --------------------------------------- In the IGI there is a John DUNCAN, born to Robert DUNCAN and Isobel MORISON, 16 December 1828, christened the 24th December, Alvah, Banffshire. A Robert DUNCAN and an Isabel MORISON are listed as having been married at Alvah, Banffshire, 26 August 1824. Another marriage of a Robert DUNCAN and an Isabel MORRISON [note 2 "r's" and different spelling of "Isabel"] is entered in the records of King Edward parish, 15 August 1824. In the SR Marriage Register for the Parish of King Edward, Banffshire 1867, Page 6, No. 11 is an entry for a John DUNCAN, age 38, bachelor, farmer at Fortrie, Gamrie, whose parents were Robert DUNCAN, farmer (deceased) and Isabella MORISON. His bride was Janet TAYLOR, age 25, spinster, housekeeper, resident at Yonderton, King Edward. Parents were George TAYLOR, flesher, and Margaret TAYLOR, m.s. MORISON. This John DUNCAN and Janet TAYLOR were married 14 November 1867. Witnesses were J. BARCLAY and James DUNCAN. This couple had five children, the second of whom was Patrick DUNCAN, born Fortrie, Gamrie 21 December 1870. Patrick DUNCAN became a colonial administrator, lawyer and politician in South Africa, and served as Governor-General from 1937-1943. He was granted a knighthood and died in 1943. There is a biography of him, with photo, in the new edition of the _Oxford Dictionary of National Biography_. ----------------------------------------- Bill Ramp > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > > Subject: > > Re: Catto - Duncan in Alvah, Banff > From: > > cammor@axionet.com > Date: > > 16 Oct 2005 17:27:46 -0600 > To: > > SCT-BANFFSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com > > >This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > >Surnames: Catto Duncan Elder >Classification: Query > >Message Board URL: > >http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ReC.2ACI/2747.1.1 > >Message Board Post: > >Dear Toni - >Thank you for the reply and information. Fun to see all those familiar names but slightly different connections. Your 6x Great grandparents John Elder and Janet Cowie are also in my tree. He was brother to George Elder, who was my 4x great grandfather. George married Ann Stuart in 1773, and had 10 children, the youngest of whom, Ann, was mother to the John Duncan I am searching for. John and Isabella Catto had an illegitimate daughter (as far as we know) who was my great-grandmother. She was known as both Joan Catto and Ann Duncan, and was born in 1862. >John went on to have a family later with wife Ann between 1873 and 1889, but unfortunately I know little of them except their names. >Would love to hear from any other Cattos and Duncans from the Alvah area to exchange information. >Marilyn >
