The Alvah MIs already mentioned which by now like me you've already looked up no doubt (#15 [Anne SHERRES, James SMOUT 15 Mar 1779], #16 [Alexander COLVILLE, James SMOLLET 16 Nov 1795, Elizabeth DUFFES 30 Apr 1831], #35 [Janet SMOUT, George SMITH 20 Feb 1750]) may show even older Smout/Smollet relatives. When I last looked, the IGI had: A. William Hardie & Elizabeth Smout m 24-9-1792 or 24-11-1792 Alvah (the IGI has both dates). Their family:- at Alvah, parents William Hardy & Elizabeth Smollet: born 21-1-1794 bpt 23-1-1794 Isabel Hardy all bpt at Alvah to parents William Hardie & Elizabeth Smout: 12-4-1795 Mary Hardie 16-4-1797 John Hardie 14-4-1799 William Hardie 26-7-1801 James Hardie 19-2-1804 Margaret Hardie There is no doubt in my mind that this is all one family. B. John Hardie & Martha Smith m 5-8-1792 Alvah: Their family: b 13-4-1793 bpt 13-4-1793 John Hardie at Alvah b 24-11-1794 bpt 30-11-1794 Anne Hardie at Alvah b 18-12-1797 bpt 20-12-1796 Mary Hardie at Alvah bpt 13-10-1798 Martha Hardie at Alvah bpt 19-5-1801 William Hardie at Alvah bpt 4-8-1803 Christian Hardie at Alvah bpt 3-3-1806 Alexander Hardie at Alvah bpt 20-10-1809 James Hardie at Alvah bpt 14-10-1812 Hans Hardie at Alvah. [In 1881 he was at Protstonhill Gamrie, crofter 5½ ac ar (69 iso 68), with wife Agnes (61) and daughter Mary (25) both from Gamrie (155-A-3-2).] 'My' John HARDY could be either one of the two families above. He died as John HARDY on 13-Jul-1871 age 78y 3m (which implies that he is the son of John HARDIE & Martha SMITH) with his father named by his step-daughter as William HARDY a gardener (which implies that he is the son of William HARDIE & Elizabeth SMOUT); he is buried in the new cemetery at Banff as John HARDIE age 79. Therefore, yer pays yer money and yer takes yer choice as to his parentage. I gave up at this point, because he isn't related to me! But maybe you know what happened to other children of Wm HARDY & Eliz SMOUT? The life of John HARDY may be as complicated as his (common-law?) wife Janet CRUICKSHANK. I think he had a (illeg?) son John HENRY who married Charlotte GRANT on 22-Nov-1848 in Alvah - they had a couple of children variously surnamed HENRY / HENERY / HENDRY. Howard
