Both names seem to have drawn a blank as far as researching further - does anyone have any information? I think we are looking at the Banff or Keith area.

Well, I had a tutor named Smout when I was at university, and I have in my tree a family whose surname is spelled variously as Joss or Joass. The IGI http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true has 447 listings of Joss/Joass in Banffshire, and 84 for Smout. LIBINDX http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp has 56 Joss and 3 Smout listings. HTH Anne
