Hi Elizabeth "Painted Effie" could be a pet name from "Painted Effigy". This could be a maquette or even a ship's figurehead. Or it could derive from an inn sign in that form. But I still prefer the Painted Lady idea. Perhaps it was a street of "dressmakers"? :-)) Happy & Peaceful New Year to everyone. Ray
