Hi Kay I have the complete index for the 1851 Census for Banff and as far as I can see there are no STOBOs listed anywhere in the county at that time. I also have the 1881 Census for the whole of the United Kingdom on CD and a search of that for a John Stobo born in Banffshire yields no information. This suggests several possibilities including the fact that the place of bir th may have been recorded incorrectly in the 1841 Census, he was a visitor to the area, he died between 1841 and 1851 in Banff or elsewhere before 1881. He may even have emigrated. The IGI lists only one birth in the British Isles for a John Stobo and Mary Robertson and that is for Janet who was born in Wets Linton, Peebles.in 1805.
