Hi Sandy. > I have only started on this line but it makes interesting reading. The > only thing I will say is that the girls gave their children middle > names. From the CRE's for some of them (who survived) it relates to > the father of the child. (Ill - Illegitimate). It certainly does make interesting reading. That's quite a family! I can't see any connections with my line, but a couple of the addresses are interesting. Perhaps someone on the list may elucidate. I also chucked in some surnames to see if any ring any bells: 3 Loch Lane: in 1881, I can only find Loch Street in Portsoy, the only Loch Lane being in Boyndie. Do you know where Loch Lane was in Portsoy? Sounds to me as though it would be an offshoot off Loch St. My modern map has neither. One of 'mine', Jessie MORRISON, was in Loch St in 1881 as a dom serv, and in the 1840s William WATSON my gg-gdfather was a blacksmith in Roseacre St which I think is very close by Loch St. 9 Church St: I have neighbourly references to 8 Church St (in 1941 and 1942), in context of Jessie Watson MORRISON(who was born illeg as Jessie Morrison WATSON, and mentioned above, the mother Margaret WATSON later marrying the father Alexander MORRISON) and her sister Jane MORRISON (who was born illeg as Jane Morrison WATSON - she married William Forbes LITTLEJOHN). In fact, it was Jessie Watson MORRISON of whom Ann SMITH (of 2 Schoolhendry St, Portsoy) said she was a cousin when she was born on 1-12-1864 in Chapel St, Ann Smith being the informant. Redhythe: Another coincidence is that an Ann SMITH age 20 (whom I think was Ann Smith above) was living at Redhythe in 1841 as a female servant. I don't know with which family - but your Taylors were there in later years. Another coincidence of names is that my Ann Smith had an illeg dau Jane Ann LITTLEJOHN born 1851 to Alexander LITTLEJOHN. I cannot fathom where Ann SMITH fits with my Watson/Morrison/Littlejohn lines. When she died in 1907 her parents were given as "George Smith general merchant (deceased) and Jane Scott ms Mitchell (deceased)" - can't identify them either. And another thing: she had a grandaughter Isabella CLARK born 2-7-1858 Schoolhendry Portsoy illeg, parents: George CLARK farm servant and Margaret MCKENZIE domestic servant. So which parent was her child, if either?! As one or two may have noticed, I'm stumped. Help! Regards Howard
Hi Howard, Loch Lane, I think is next to Roseacre Street and Loch Street. Durn Road is along from them and then its the Cullen Road (A98). It does exist as my father and my grandmothers cousin can testify. It leads down to Loch Soy. I am going to visit there tomorrow and take a few photo's I will also be visiting other addresses that I have links with. I know that Church Street numbers have changed and I'm going to try and get a copy of an old town plan (if they still exist). I need a look at the 1901 census also and that will be a visit to Elgin. From the CRE, I have found from the NAS that Elizabeth TAYLOR and George MCKENZIE were both working at Upper Blairock, Deskford in 1910-1911. There is also a William MCKENZIE father to Hannah TAYLOR's illegitimate daughter, Helen, could be related to the above George? I'll have look out for the other bits a pieces you have mentioned below. I have another for you, Elizabeth, my ggrandmother had another son, who went to New Zealand, by the name of William MITCHELL TAYLOR. He went there with his sister Jessie PIRIE TAYLOR and his cousin George TAYLOR. The went to North Island around Rotorua. I have been speaking to a cousin of my grandmother who gave me this information. I don't know if any of the listers can put me in touch with Elizabeth Lusby who is out there? Howard, I'll send you some photo's off list.
