Greetings from Western Australia Listers! My name is Nigel Boundy in Western Australia. My mother's grandfather was Alexander FLETCHER born in Macduff, Gamrie SCT 1837. His parents were Neil and Janet FLETCHER nee BLACK. They were married in Macduff in 1832. They produced 5 children. On the 1841 census only Neil and Janet (both age 40), Alexander age 4, and 2 daughters Mary age 3 and Amelia age 10 months were listed. Two older brothers John Rainey and George were not listed and I can find no subsequent records for them. Perhaps they died pre 1841. Also, Neil is noted as not being born in the county of Banffshire. Neil was originally a sailor/seaman on his children's christenings until 1837 when he was noted as a merchant and then in 1840 as a grocer in Macduff. On the 1841 census he is a merchant and spice dealer. The age of Neil on the 1841 census confuses me as I have his christening as 1811 in Reay, Caithness which would give his age as 30. I hope I have the right christening? I deduced this christening from the name of Neil's first born son, John Rainey FLETCHER and one of Alexander's daughters. Janet MacDonald FLETCHER. The parents of the child, Neil, christened in Reay were John FLETCHER and Janet McDONALD. Anyway, none of the family is listed in the 1851 census of Gamrie. I searched all of 1881 census in Scotland, England and Wales and no mention of any of them. I do know what happened to son Alexander who ended up in Nelson, New Zealand perhaps on the "Gladiator" in 1861. He married Catherine McGEE in 1870 in Nelson and they immediately moved to Melbourne, Victoria. Alexander was a well known photographer and ran Art Galleries in Melbourne. He was involved in the Melbourne International Exhibition 1880/1881 as the Superintendent of Fine Arts. He received an honour for his role in this event. My problem is that I cannot trace any movements of the family post 1841 census of Gamrie. I searched the burial records in Gamrie. I searched the SR death records of Scotland post 1855 online at www.scotlandspeole.gov.uk. I wonder whether the whole family moved to New Zealand? If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. TIA Regards, Nigel BOUNDY Western Australia --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? HotJobs - Search new jobs daily now
