Her husband is not at home, so must be working elsewhere. Where is he? What details have you regarding your Alexander GEDDES and his parentage? From my notes, it looks as though he could be a son of John GEDDES and Isabella BEATON, not least because I have been told by a descendant of this family and member of the Lothians fhs that one of their children married a 'McManmonna'. If that's right, I have details leading back to Robert GEDDES and Margaret PATERSON who married abt 1782 Corstorphine. I also have details of another Robert GEDDES who married Martha MASON 1783 Cramond. Their daughter Jean had an illeg son by Robert PENTLAND born 1815 and named Robert PENTLAND. Young Robert PENTLAND 'got into trouble' and was transported to Australia in 1835. Nothing to do with my main GEDDES line, my gt-gt-gdmother was Mary PENTLAND from Little France in Liberton, and it was thought that one or other of the Robert PENTLANDs above was from the same line, but it now appears probably not so. Still, any extra detail would be useful in untangling the numerous Liberton/Newton/Inveresk Pentlands. On GEDDES front, I cannot see the connection between your GEDDES family and those in this particular thread. Can you enlighten? Regards Howard Geddes

It was noted for its bracing (!) climate and the longevity and hardiness of its people. See: http://www.threestones.co.uk/index.html Bill Ramp Alberta, Canada

    2. Ray Hennessy
    3. Hi List Some pet gripes - sorry! Best to get it over before the holidays. I belong to many lists, as do most of us. It is vital to be able to scan each message quickly to determine if it is relevant. We all have busy lives so: Could I respectfully ask ALL listers to put all Surnames in CAPITALS. Many folk do this but many don't. Also consider if Place-names/Parish names could put usefully be put in capitals when they are the main AND the important part of the message. And, please, make the SUBJECT of the message meaningful. Most people do but folk replying to Digests often leave the Subject heading as found. A recent one had this subject: "Re: XXXX-D Digest V05 #394" This isn't a unique case. Some Lists have whole threads similarly obscure. Don't be afraid of changing the Subject field, especially if dealing with one point or a variant! And, while moaning, could you maybe REMOVE THE DROSS from the end of any messages copied. I once had a message of one line which had fifteen screensful of irrelevant copies [and bland Server messages] attached to it when only the latest four line message was relevant. I'm running out of storage space. End of whinge. I feel better and hope I haven't offended anyone. Sorry to anyone who got multiple copies. Love & peace to all you good searchers. Ray Hennessy

    3. A couple of elaborations on Ray's advice. My great weakness is the REPLY button. It's so easy to hit "reply" or "reply all" without checking. But if done without checking either subject line OR address .... or what's below the message I've just written.... it invariably leads to inconvenience, missed connections and mixups (e.g., off-list messages going to list). A similar embarrassment can arise when one sends a message to all those individuals in one's address book, forgetting that list addresses lurk there too. I speak as a repeat offender -- I now have a post-it note on my monitor reading, "BEFORE you hit REPLY" ....... Sometimes the note even works...... They originally show up in Auchterless, Aberdeenshire, but their decendants were at Gawnsmoss and Forglen, Banff. They had four children: Barbara 1822, John 1825, George 1827, and Ann 1830 (at least that I've found so far). Barbara married (or didn't) a number of times and had about 8 children, most with different surnames: Pirie, Jameson, Martin, Smith and Fidler. John is also credited with two illegitimate daughters before he married Ann Duncan (cousin?) in 1873 and had ten legitimate children: John, George, James, Robert, Alexander, Helen, William, Peter, Andrew and Henry between 1873 and 1889. Of those children, George married Eliza Jane Hendry, James married Maggie Donald, and Helen married George Hendry. I have nothing further on James and Ann's third son, George. Youngest child Ann maried William Findlater in 1851 and so far I have just one daughter, Elizabeth Findlater. The Christian Andrew I have is the daughter of Andrew and Jean Greig, born in 1827 in Alvah. She married a John Nicol in 1850. So, no exact matches, but we'll keep digging. Marilyn

If you go to the GENUKI site, specifically to the Boyndie list of Place-names, which you can see at: http://www.abdnet.co.uk/genuki/BAN/Boyndie/locations.html , you will see that Baldavie Cottage, as such, was last heard of in the 1881 Census. That doesn't mean it no longer exists, it may now be contained within a group of cottages or buildings round the main farm [?] or have another name. We have recorded all the Place-names in Boyndie in most of the Census films and various maps [see the site for details]. We have identified as many Census locations as possible on modern maps but unheralded changes of name are very difficult to cross identify. You can see from the list where the various Baldavie locations are to be found. This will give you a reasonable place to start in your search "on the ground". Even if you can't identify the exact building, you will at least be able to see the sort of locality your g-grandfather lived and worked in. Good hunting Ray Hennessy

    1. re. 2 children died in 1 day
    2. William Ramp
    3. Just a small contribution to this thread. I am working on transcribing some correspondence between residents of Dufftown and their emigrant relatives in the 1830's and '40's. From this correspondence, it seems that scarlet fever was a constant threat. An example (this is dated March 26, 1835): There has also been a great many deaths since you left this but by the mercy of God we and our nearest relations have all been spared except Mr. Ragg's little Sandy who died of scarlet fever the [illegible] of the present month and has been much lamented by us all, Isabella and James have had the fever also but are now quite recovered, Mr Stewart your own tenant's two little boys also died of the fever but it was a worse kind of it than Mr. Ragg's children had. There is at present three of the Major's Daughters in it also but they are in a fair way of recovery and they think that the rest will escape and a few weeks since Gordon's life was despaired of with inflamation in the bowels but is now quite recovered and also Mr. Charles Stewart who has had so many days of dishealth I may say years is in some degree better he has has [sic] been able to go once or twice down about length of the chapel and it is hoped that he will con - tinue so although he still remains with the loss of sight in one of eyes. And Mrs. Captain Grant sister to Mr. Forsyth died in about thirteen minutes illness and is very much regretted by all her friends it was supposed that it was the bursting of a blood vessel that was the cause of her death but there was no mark of it seen. [For thise with an interest: "Mr. Ragg" is Alexander Ragg, then postmaster of Dufftown. Sandy, Isabella and James are his children. "The Major" is, I believe, Captain Stewart of Pittyvaich, though I have yet to confierm this. Charles is the latter's son. I have not yet identified "Mrs. Captain Grant." The writer of the letter is Ann Shand, and the recipient was her father, William Shand, formerly of Mortlach, who had emigrated to Canada the previous year. Ann was staying with the Ragg's until her own emigration in 1836] Bill Ramp Lethbridge, Alberta Ray Hennessy wrote: > Margaret is right about epidemics in the 1840s. 3. Can sks help me with the name MC LOUN ? It would appear that it is quite rare. It is accurate because her husband used it in his Will - " Mrs Helen McLoun".She was born circa 1795 and registered in Banff. Perhaps it is spelled McLaun/McLean From what I have been able to ascertain she came from Gamrie. Her fathers name was Robert McLoun and he was a tailor. Her mother was Annie Wallace ( I haven't even started on this name yet!!) This information came from Helen's death certificate. She married Thomas Newton in Glasgow in 1822. I have tried scotlandspeople but at this stage have had no luck. Any help would be appreciated. Katherine O'Regan New Zealand. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition.
