    1. STOBO - 1841 Census
    2. Kay Sleith
    3. Hello, I am new to this list. In fact, I don't even know where Banffshire is! I am hoping that SKS may be able to help me. In 1841 Cenus, I have found a John Stobo living with a family INNES (innkeeper). He may be my John Stobo altho birthplace of Banffshire is a surprise to me. Civil parish is Aberlour Ecclesiastical Parish. Address Charlestown. My John Stobo was the son of John STOBO & Mary ROBERTSON. I had assumed that he came from around Peebles, but may be wrong. Is anyone researching any of these names? Kay from Australia

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ReC.2ACI/2759 Message Board Post: Why has the undernoted message been deleted? Surely Ancestry.Com do not condone such criminal behaviour? It is in everyones interest to let the facts be known and cut off this fraudster's ill gotten gains. Luckily it has been posted to all Rootsweb Family History Sites, so hopefully this will in some way curtail his illegal activities. Readers, please take note of the fact that Jim Gray was never involved, in research on the veterans buried in Australia, and has only begun misappropriating information from a published work, CIVIL WAR VETERANS IN AUSTRALIA, by Virginia Crocker, published in 2000, as well as several web sites which contain this data. He has refused to listen to advice to refrain from plagiarising this data, and is using it for his own selfish means, namely to obtain donations for work which was originally researched some twenty years ago. A court case is now in motion which will show the true nature of this plagiarist and his greedy agenda.

    3. I am extremely pleased with all of the wonderful responses and research undertaken on my behalf to my query on the Gordons (Mitchells) of Banffshire. Special thanks to Howard, Ian, Alyson and Colleen for their replies and for checking out the Parish, Digger and Historical Victoria records for me. It would appear that Georgina Jane Gordon and sister Maggie Isabella were indeed born in Richmond, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia to George Gordon and Jane Young. Richmond is an inner suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. From: "Digger - Pioneer Index. Victoria 1836-1888" Query:- Surname: Gordon / Father: George / Mother: Jane Young 1. George Alexander Gordon birth 1856 Richmond to George Gordon & Jane Young (Reg #: 1085) George Alexander Gordon of George Gordon & Jane Young death 1856 age 9m Ric (Reg #:739) 2. Georgina Jane Gordon (indexed perhaps as Gina Jane) birth 1857 Richmond to George Gordon & Jane Young (Reg #: 9533) 3. Margt Isabella Gordon birth 1859 Richd to Geo Gordon & Jane Young (Reg #: 18306) Similar Index Records for the three Australian born Gordon children can be found in the Historic Index for Births, Deaths and Marriages at http://online.justice.vic.gov.au. With this new knowledge, it would seem that George Gordon and Jane Young married on 18 Mar 1846, in Creich, Sutherland, Scotland, and (so far) had 5 children. Its not clear when George Gordon, wife and Family travelled to Australia or when they returned to Scotland. One child, George Alexander died as an infant in Victoria, Australia. And there is still the puzzling question of the St Vincent, West Indies and perhaps the sugar plantation link. So more interesting searching to do! 3. Bev, sorry no - well maybe a bit. I have only guessed George GORDON's parentage from the IGI on a 'best-candidate' basis. Often works, but sometimes doesn't, which is why I qualified the statement with a 'probably'. Ian A C Scott has just supplied the following from the Bellie OPR has: "George, Lawful Son to George Gordon and Ann Hay, Longhowe, was born 19th and baptised 28th February 1820. Witnesses George Johnston and George Forbes in Dallachy." Maybe a clue in there? Regards Howard
