    2. Regarding note from ALICE.. Meg would you check and see if there is a birth listed for 1855(I don't have the month) in Botriphnie or nearby as follows: ROBERT BARCLAY male JANE OR JEAN DUNCAN mother ROBERT BARCLAY father To Meg.. I would also be very interested in that BARCLAY birth in Botriphnie.. If you find this entry I would like to know names of Jean DUNCAN's parents.. I am tracing Jane/Jean DUNCAN b. 1815 Botriphnie.. who may or may not be direct ancestor who married George PIRIE in 1847 and died in 1850 before good records were kept.. I have a good candidate.. but if she pops up in this record.. then back to square #1.. Aloha from Hawaii.. Colette Pirie

    1. 1855 Banff Birth, Marriage and Death Registrations
    2. Meg Greenwood
    3. The Family History Center where I volunteer here in central USA has all 1855 Civil Registration events for the county of Banff on microfilm indefinitely held here. Fees for ordering films will almost double across the US beginning this month, there may be people who'd like to order these films but find it out of their reach. I'm sure there are subscribers who don't live near a FHC. If you'd like to know the information on a Birth, Marriage or perhaps a Death that was registered in 1855, I have access to the image of the original handwritten documents [there were 2 pages of information per entry in 1855] and can send the information to you or post it to the Banff-L List. 1855 was the very best year for genealogical information, beginning 1856, there were fewer questions asked of the Informant. Please make the Subject line Banff Marriages 1855 or similar so I'll know its a request, I've offered this to other shires we have films for and need to know which county you are asking about. Send name, parish and expected date [use the IGI for Births and Marriage data]. There is no fee, I'd like to request that if I send you JPGs of the Registration, that you write up the data on the other events on that same page and post it to the Banff-L List. Births had 5 entries per page, Marriages had 2 per page and Deaths had 3. They'll then be found in the Archives of this List. Hope to some of your questions will be answered with these films, can't let them sit here and gather dust......Meg Greenwood / Oklahoma USA

If she immigrated to Canada in 1872, she should be there, maybe even with her parents: see www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk HTH Anne

    3. Hi Elizabeth "Painted Effie" could be a pet name from "Painted Effigy". This could be a maquette or even a ship's figurehead. Or it could derive from an inn sign in that form. But I still prefer the Painted Lady idea. Perhaps it was a street of "dressmakers"? :-)) Happy & Peaceful New Year to everyone. Ray

    3. Hi Elizabeth, If you go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ and type in Banff then enlarge the view you can see Paintedeffie (as it's written) beside Seatown. Typing Painted Effie in the search did not bring it up. Also, a google search found Painted Effie mentioned at http://www.ivargault.com/slekt/descendants_gault.html see George Gault. Hope this helps Elaine >I was trawling through 1841 Freecen names in Banff yesterday and came >across >people living at 'Painted Effie', 'house next to Painted Effie' and >'Painted >Effie Road'. 2. Hi Elaine Thanks very much for that. Now I know where to look, it is also very clear on the Ordnance Survey 1866 map - I just hadn't gone far enough west. Still don't know what it means though. Couldn't be short for painted effigy, could it? Elizabeth

Elaine has beaten me to the punch in pointing you towards the Banffshire pages which I maintain for GENUKI. These will tell you something about the County (which ceased to exist as a separate administrative unit in 1974). Unfortunately, the parish page for Aberdour is one that I have not yet got round to updating. > ... > Civil parish is Aberlour Ecclesiastical Parish. Address Charlestown. The main centre of the parish is nowadays generally known simply as "Aberlour", but its Sunday name is "Charlestown of Aberlour". This was one of the "model villages" which were established in various parts of the country by landowners in the later 18th and early 19th century, and was named after Charles Grant of Wester Elchies. Effie was a common nickname for the popular name Euphemia. "Painted Effie" suggest to me a lady named Effie who was, um, not exactly a lady and wore whatever face paint was used in whatever century the street was named. Perhaps she plied her trade in that street? It will probably turn out to be a garbling of some other word and I'm maligning someone's perfectly respectable great-granny! Perhaps I should explain that I live in Richmond, British Columbia, which occupies Lulu Island in the mouth of the Fraser River. The island was named after a colourful pioneer woman who ran a saloon and various other establishments offering other kinds of hospitality. Margaret Gibbs Canada

    1. Re: SCT-BANFFSHIRE-D Digest V05 #242
    2. Hi Kay I have the complete index for the 1851 Census for Banff and as far as I can see there are no STOBOs listed anywhere in the county at that time. I also have the 1881 Census for the whole of the United Kingdom on CD and a search of that for a John Stobo born in Banffshire yields no information. This suggests several possibilities including the fact that the place of bir th may have been recorded incorrectly in the 1841 Census, he was a visitor to the area, he died between 1841 and 1851 in Banff or elsewhere before 1881. He may even have emigrated. The IGI lists only one birth in the British Isles for a John Stobo and Mary Robertson and that is for Janet who was born in Wets Linton, Peebles.in 1805. Not a lot of help to you but all the best in your search. Ian A C Scott
