    1. James Christie 1775-1854
    2. Bruce Christie
    3. Hi there, I am interested in tracing family history of James Christie ( solicitor and deputy Sheriff of Banff) who married Anne Milne in 1829. I know nothing of their parents and would appreciate suggestions on how to go back a bit further. We know that up until recently there have been some direct descendants living in the Banff area but I think they may now all be deceased. The 1841 census indicates James and Anne had 5 children: John b 1823, William b 1830, Mary b 1832, George b 1834 and Jean b 1840. I am a descendent through William who was my gtgt grandfather and married (1859) Veronica Cleugh Gillies b 1829 d 1882. The Gillies family would be another area I would like to know more about. We know nothing of what happened to the other children except John married and had 3 children Eleanor (who in 1890 married Svein Bjornsson and later became vice regent of Iceland), John and Mary Anne. Any information about the descendents of these people would be of great interest. There is speculation there could have been an former wife as James was about 25 years more senior than Anne but we have no definitive evidence for this speculation. I am not sure where to look to check this hypothesis. Again, any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks in advance Bruce Christie New Zealand

    3. Can anyone tell me some details about Achlichnie Farm Near Timintoul, Rathven. My ancestors quoted this name on the birth certificate of Robert Hay 1774, f James Hay m Ann Riach 1761, and had children Female 1762, Isobel 1764, James 1780, John 1766, Nathaniel 1769, William 1771, Barbara 1785 & our Robert. All baptised in Kirkmichael. We cannot seem to trace them after Robert was transported to Aust/Tassie and thought maybe info on Achlichnie would help as they all seem to have disappeared. Can anyone help? Bev

Beverley wrote: > Can anyone tell me some details about Achlichnie Farm Near Timintoul, > Rathven? ______________________________________ Hi Beverley As Anne said, Achlichnie Farm is in Kirkmichael parish. It is about 3½ miles NW of Tomintoul [note the spelling]. Its Ordnance Survey grid reference is NJ151232. If you look at multimap [see http://tinyurl.com/dhn2s ] you will see that there is a place about a mile south of the farm called Ruthven [note this spelling too!]. This may be what was meant in your notes. Achlichnie is on the eastern brae of the Strathavon valley. We were up there last year looking at Inverlochy on the other side of the burn where Sheena's G-G-Grandfather Norman MELDRUM was born in 1808. Unlike the south & east of Tomintoul which is bleak and almost featureless, the Strathavon valley is lush and very attractive. [And it goes down to Glenlivet!! ;-)) ] HTH Ray Hennessy

    3. > Can anyone tell me some details about Achlichnie Farm Near Timintoul, > Rathven. Well, Achlichnie is still there, in Strathavon, a few miles north of Tomintoul in the parish of Kirkmichael. However I don't know how the Rathven bit fits in - Rathven is at the opposite end of the county of Banff - it's the parish in which the town of Buckie is situated. You can find both Achlichnie and Buckie online at www.streetmap.co.uk > maybe info on Achlichnie would help as they all seem to have disappeared. HTH Anne

    3. Hi Elizabeth, How amazing to think you were a witness to the actual bomb. Was anyone hurt? The story was that the cows couldn't get to their feet to be milked. Was it the film Bonnie & Clyde where a story was told of an old teetotal lady who drank milk laced with whisky and said "don't sell that cow!!" You can see it on multimap at http://tinyurl.com/c234u . Multimap is based on the earlier OS Landranger 1" series and names it as 'Mains of Colleonard' [i.e. a farm]. It also shows the location of the "Sculpture Garden". Note that the Banff & Buchan Arts Forum calls the place for this as "South Colleonard House" although South Colleonard is at least a mile west of it, and a mile southwest of the Mains. The 1896 OS map names it simply as 'Colleonard', all of which seems to suggest that the present name might represent a larger modern construction. Maybe a 'local' can describe it for you. I hope this gives you a flavour of the place. Best wishes Ray Hennessy

    3. Re Banff Single Malt. Yes it can still be purchased without too much trouble. A couple of years ago, Edradour Distillery outside Pitlochry had bottles for sale, pride of place in their shop - if I remember for about £100. I made appropriate noises, and I was offered a taster from the open bottle that appeared as if by magic from under the counter. Very nice too! Even if it was 11am, and I and my brother-in-law had just knocked back the standard free dram of Edradour from the tour, plus the wife's, plus the extra spare one.... What a nice outing that was.....I think. Regards Howard Geddes

    2. I actually saw the distillery being bombed. I was walking back to Macduff from Tarlair when a lone aircraft came in from the sea and dropped a single bomb. There was a large column of smoke and flame. Next day, my grandfather, drove past it and reported that there were cows lurching about in the field next door, thoroughly drunk from lakes of whisky. I wonder if they charged extra for their milk! Elizabeth Gabriel

    3. Hi Anne, Thanks for these sites. I must try to visit Colleonard some day! James SIMPSON of Colleonard rebuilt the Banff distillery at Inverboyndie in 1863. http://www.royalmilewhiskies.com/category.asp?cat_id=D_BANF Operational: 1863 - 1983 Region: Speyside Neighbours: Glenglassaugh, Glen Deveron Address: Inverboyndie, Banff, Banffshire, AB45 2JJ. Last known owner: Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd. The first (Speyside) distillery by the name of Banff was built in 1824. In 1863 James Simpson jr. built a new distillery on the same spot to replace the old one, but after a fire it had to be rebuilt again in 1877. In WWII the distillery was damaged by a bomb. It was finally closed and demolished in 1983, apart from the last remaining warehouses that were demolished after yet another fire that plagued Banff on April 11, 1991. Here is more from a site devoted to the silent distilleries of Scotland http://www.maltmadness.com/silent.html It sounds as though the Banff product is a fine rarity so if anyone has a bottle ?? it will be worth a fortune.
