The place names in the parish registers and hence in the IGI are parishes, not towns, villages etc. Many parishes, like Grange, are rural areas with no settlement of the same name, and parishes are not marked on modern maps, so the parish names tend to get lost. Other examples are Botriphnie (look for Drummuir on a map) Marnoch (Bridge of Marnoch or Aberchirder) Gamrie (Macduff) or better still, see the parish list at http://www.abdnet.co.uk/genuki/BAN/ HTH Anne

Karen has already answered, pointing you towards: www.abdnet.co.uk/genuki/BAN/Grange but can I put in a plug for the work that Ray Hennessy and I are doing on producing a Gazetteer of Banffshire placenames? We are gradually working through the County, but have finished Grange, so if you scroll down the above page to the section headed 'Names, Geographical', you will find a link to an extensive list of placenames in the parish. On a more general point, note that, when the IGI or other sources give an 'address' for some 19th century baptism or marriage, this is generally given in the form: 'parish name, county name'. Many of the rural parishes contained no town, some of them not even a significant village. Grange is one that falls into this category. In modern usage, the parishes have ceased to be used for any administrative purpose, and the counties have changed, with many (such as Banffshire) disappearing completely. Which is why you will not find many places via modern sites such as Mapquest. However, there is help available. The work that Ray and I are doing grows out of (and feeds into) the online Gazetteer maintained by GENUKI. This is available at various URLs, but if you go to the main GENUKI County page for Banffshire (www.abdnet.co.uk/genuki/BAN/) you will see a list of Banffshire parishes, and if you scroll down , you will see a link to the Gazetteer. If you do a search, you will get a readout which lists placenames by parish, and the data includes a column of map references in the form 'AB123456'. Click on this link, and you will be taken to a further page which offers a choice of links to online maps where you can see where your target place is (although not all historical name appear on modern maps). 2. Grange is a Parish in Banffshire, therefore an area, not a town. It is S of Deskford and Cullen on the coast. For more info go to http://www.abdnet.co.uk/genuki/BAN/Grange/index.html#Maps and there is also a map. 1. COWIE, GEDDES, STEVENSON Fordyce, Deskford, Banff
    2. Howard Geddes
    3. I've had this family 'on file' for some while now, and Ruth's recent offer of their son's death certificate details has rekindled my interest in identifying Elspet GEDDES below. On 3-Jul-1803 in Fordyce James COWIE and Elspet GEDDES "both in this parish" married. Their family (per IGI) were, all bpt Fordyce: George COWIE 4-May-1804 James COWIE 11-Feb-1806 Ann COWIE 9-Mar-1808 William COWIE 1-Sep-1810 Isabel COWIE 1-Jul-1813 Questions: - can anyone provide the OPR details of the COWIE baptisms? I'd like to know where they lived as well as their witnesses. - can anyone provide the location of the 1851 census entry bk4 pg 5 (see below)? - has anybody got anything more on this family that might help me identify Elspet GEDDES? George COWIE died in 1862 at Carestown in Deskford: "George COWIE single died 5-12-1862 8.45pm Carestown, aged 58, of --- several years; parents James COWIE farmer (deceased) and Elspet COWIE ms GEDDES (deceased); inf: William STEVENSON brother in law present." - 1862-Deskford-24. I've found George COWIE in the 1851 Index, in Fordyce age 46 b Fordyce (bk 4 pg 5). If anyone's interested, the IGI has enabled me to also identify with confidence the brother-in-law William STEVENSON. I'm sure this will be verifiable at the GRO. This is the family: William Stevenson & Anne Cowie marr: 22-5-1836 Banff, Banff (M111474) - family all in Banff, Banffshire (C111474) parents William Stevenson & Ann Cowie: - Alexander Stevenson Birth: 06 DEC 1839 Christening: 26 DEC 1839 Banff, Banff - William Stevenson Birth: 08 NOV 1841 Christening: 14 DEC 1841 Banff, Banff - James Stevenson Birth: 23 DEC 1845 Christening: 13 JAN 1846 Banff, Banff - Elsie Ann Stevenson Birth: 27 JUN 1848 Christening: 25 AUG 1848 Banff, Banff And into the bargain, this could well be James Stevenson above: James Stevenson Birth: , , Scotland Parents: William Stevenson & Anna Cowie Bertha M. Thixon Birth: , , Kentucky Parents: Unknown Marriage: 16 MAY 1892 , Allegan, Michigan (M017163) In 1881, son William is at Careston Deskford as William STEINSON, with wife and family. This clinches it for me. All this from a single certificate! Thank you Ruth. Regards Howard Geddes

    3. > Resubmitting my two names. Robert MCLOUN, tailor b.abt 1771 and Annie > WALLACE b. abt 1775. Can anyone shed light on a marriage date for these > two please? IGI has confusing dates . Can't even find them at all on the IGI! Check the source information. If it says 'extracted', believe it. If it says 'submitted', don't trust it. If the entry appears in two different places, this could indicate that the couple lived in two different parishes. The banns would have to be called in both parishes, so there would be two records of the event. As the entry records the proclamation of banns, not the actual marriage, they may be written on two different dates, or one of the clerks may have added the actusl date of marriage. The golden rule with the IGI is: always look up the original document. HTH Anne
