It is marked on the Landranger map, and is about two miles north from Davoch of Grange. Anne

    3. Dear Ray, Thanks for your useful comments. That might explain why the name John became Joseph. I wondered if it was just a reading of the line above or below by mistake - which is something I do myself often enough. I always extol the advantages of looking at the original records because you nearly always find something of added interest. I've forwarded my letter to a friend/rellie in Wales to see if he can throw any light on the Wales and Banff connection. I pointed out that this was "less than sensible" and that it corrupted the database without acknowledgment. The response: this was a "norm" for the IGI and other such transcriptions, but not always followed by transcribers. Personally I think this was a diabolical way to proceed and hope that most of the transcribers ignored it. If we are to have any faith at all in these on-line records, they absolutely MUST be faithful to the original. Many of the transcribers did put dashes where there found an unreadable letter or letter string. Unfortunately some of them are 'clever' and put what they think it 'should be'. Your experience shows that it is essential to look at the original as far as possible. I suspect the instructions were generated before Soundex and similar search methods became universal and was a way of making the search facilities more responsive. But introducing untraceable modifications to the records? Words fail me! Best wishes Ray Hennessy

    3. I was in the library yesterday checking CLAYTON and ADAM OPRs and found this one entry which I want to share with the List: Banff 1785 John CLYTON 5 son named after John HARDEN servant to the Earle of Fife --------------------------------- (new column) John CLYTON Servant to the Earle of Fife. Lawfull son of John CLYTON labourer in Walsh Moor Montgomerie Shire in Wals (sic) in England and Gwen MORRICE his wife. Jean SMITH, lawfull daughter of Aleck SMITH some time Black Smith in Banff and Margaret IMLACK his wife ----------------------------------------------------------------- Born: 3 June 1785, Baptised 23 June 1785. Wit: John CONN. John WATTIS Servants to the Earle Of Fyfe ---------------------------------------------------------------- There were plenty of other similarly rich entries including deaths. Some Parish clerks really took their job seriously and we benefit. I checked this entry with the IGIs and he was the 5th son but the father is named as Joseph CLAYTON and the dates are not exactly the same either which I find odd as the handwriting was very clear and the spelling unique. Best Wishes, Jane ps do you think anyone in Wals <grin> would be interested?

    3. I wonder if anyone can help me locate in 1841 a James DUFF poss Rev b Auchindachy 1810 had an affair with Isbel INNES in Forgie 1839 resulting in son John DUFF b Dec 1839 Boharm Bpt Jan 1840.In 1847 he was assistant minister at New Spynie and in 1852 moved to Crieff as minister.I know he graduated from Aberdeen in 1831 but have no knowledge of him until 1839 and then 1847.Was he Rev in the Forgie area or schoolteacher? I have his son John having an affair in 1856 with Margaret GORDON of Lime Kilns Maisley resulting in Dau Jane DUFF b Maisley in 1857 and who in 1871 was with her father and his wife Jane GARDINER in Cullen.John was with his mother Isbel INNES in Forgie in 1841 and looks as though from c 1851 to 1857 he was in Broadrashes a farm near Keith.Next door in Broadrashes in 1851 was Robert DUFF and his wife and daughter unsure of the relationship.John was married in Cullen in 1862 but where was he in 1861? His father James died at the Mains of Auchindachy near Keith in 1860 but I have no reason to suspect that John was in attendance. There was an aunt Catherine TURNER nee Duff living at Auchmore in Rathven but again I find no evidence to link John with her. Also an uncle Thomas DUFF at the Mains of Auchindachy but again no suggestion that he was with him.On his marriage certificate in 1862 he registered his father as John DUFF and his mother as Isbel INNES and his normal place of res! idence as Drumblade.Again I can find no evidence in support of this. Appreciate any assistance in furthering my research Sincerely Alex

I am a descendant of George Bruce ADAM, younger brother of the Thomas ADAM, the banker, http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=kosmoid&id=I15244 I have been studying their extended families but can always do with more links, info and contacts. 2. Hi Anne Sorry to be a nuisance! I have been having a further look at the 1851 Census information you posted for Adam and it would appear to me that the William Adam, widower, aged 73 at 9 Bridge Street could be Thomas Adam's father. Thomas had a sister named Jane (Jean?) and another named Isabella but their ages are adrift by about 3 or 4 years less. I also have a Margaret Adam born in August 1827 which would make her 23 at the time of the census but if the 3 or 4 years difference applied here also could this be the E... you have included? 2. Hi Anne Further to my posting, I should have mentioned that although you have a query against the middle name Birnie for John Adam this will be correct as his mother's maiden name was Mary Ann Birnie. Also, my research indicates that Alexander had the middle name Chivas but where this comes from I have no idea. Ian A C Scott

    2. Hi Anne Many thanks for posting your findings for the surname Adam from the 1851 Census. The Thomas Adam at 49 High Street, was the nephew of William Scott, a Provost of Banff and an Executor of his will when he died in 1860. Thomas Adam's mother was Jean Scott. I had only found two of Thomas Adam's children so this information fills in a bit more or me. Thank you Ian A C Scott.

    1. Re: [Banff] COWIE, GEDDES, Auchmore and Wyllieholes, Fordyce
    2. Howard Geddes
    3. Hi Anne. Thanks for that, really helpful; in fact you have helped towards identifying Elspet GEDDES. Therefore, a follow-up. It looks like the COWIE family were long-time farmers at Wyllieholes (today's spelling). George COWIE and Anne GEDDES moved there about 1756 from Badenspink which was and is the adjacent farm. They had children baptised from 1751 to 1766, so they must have married 1750/51, but I haven't found a record of their marriage - is there one hiding in the Fordyce OPR? Secondly, the following are the children of George COWIE and Ann GEDDES. I thought Listers in general might be interested in all the witnesses and places, and even may recognise some. Tillynaught, Badenspink, Wyllieholes, Baronsmill and are all adjacent, with Newmills (of Boyne) not far away. Boyndie is quite a way away, comparatively. Auchmore is just outside Portsoy. Taking all into account, I believe this family must be connected to the Auchmore Geddeses of John Geddes & Margaret Tulloch, but it's not easy to see how Ann Geddes fits in. As always, trying to fathom whether and how they might connect into my own Fordyce Geddeses over at Birkenbog. Anything on Auchmore Farm in early 1700s would be helpful, too. Another place with GEDDES in early 1700s is Wellheads: the gradual migration south from Portsoy during the 1700s is obvious. First line is the IGI entry (which is accurate). Then an abbreviated version of the OPR itself: the father's surname and location; the witnesses; my comments. 1. Helen CUIE - Christening: Jun 1751 Fordyce, Banff Cuie in Badenspink. Mrs Helen Ruddach, Wm Thomson in Barons Mill & Wm Geddes in Auchmore. Wm Geddes is almost certainly William Geddes h/o Isobel Morrison. 2. James COWIE - Christening: 17 Jun 1753 Fordyce, Banff Cowie in Badenspink. Mr James Lawtie Min'r & James Peterkin in Newmills. 3. Anne COWIE - Christening: 8 May 1755 Fordyce, Banff Cowie in Badenspink. William Thomson, Wm Clerk in Badenspink & Anne Johnson in Fordyce. 4. Janet COWIE - Christening: 7 Mar 1757 Fordyce, Banff Cowie in Wyllieholes. Janet Aven in Tillinaught & Janet Geddes in Boyndie. Might Janet Geddes be the one bpt 1-4-1724 in Boyndie to James Geddes? Who is James Geddes? 5. George COWIE - Christening: 4 Apr 1759 Fordyce, Banff, Scotland Cowie in Wyllieholes. George Clerk, George Reid at Mill of Tillinaught. 6. Isobel COWIE - Christening: 14 Feb 1761 Fordyce, Banff Cowie in Wyllieholes. Isobel Cowie, Isobel Morison, John Geddes, Alexr Donald. Isobel Morrison is almost certainly Isobel Morrison w/o William Geddes. Like Ann Geddes, John Geddes could be a hitherto unknown child of John Geddes h/o Margaret Tulloch m abt 1719. 7. Margaret COWIE - Christening: 2 Nov 1762 Fordyce, Banff Cowie in Wyllieholes. William Thomson in Barrons Mill, William Geddes, Alexander Donald. William Geddes is almost certainly William Geddes h/o Isobel Morrison. 8. Mary COWIE - Christening: 29 Jan 1766 Fordyce, Banff Cowie in Wyllieholes. George Gray in Banff, James Wilson in Boyndie. Regards Howard Geddes
