    3. Hi Judy, Susan et al Doesn't seem to be an obvious connection, but who knows with all the names up there! My Isabella WALKER (born c1828) was a dressmaker in Forres and married John GRANT(b1828), shoemaker, in Forres in Feb 1876. She was his second wife, but by the time they were married, they already had two sons together, she had two sons from two other men and he had 8 children from his first marriage. No wonder he needed a new wife! His first wife, Isabella DAVIDSON, died in January 1870 when their youngest, Robert, was only a month old. Family is as follows: 1. John GRANT m. Janet STUART 17 Feb 1825, Inveravon, Banff Children (all born in Inveravon) William 17 Dec 1825 James 11 Mar 1827 2. John 6 Oct 1828 (my gr gr grandfather) Elspeth 8 June 1830 Jane 4 June 1832 Alexander 30 March 1834 Robert 8 April 1836 Anne 30 June 1837 Mary 31 May 1839 *George 15 April 1841 2. John GRANT (b1828) m. Isabella DAVIDSON (c1826 - 1870) 12 June 1856 in Inverness Children (all born in Forres) Alexander 13 June 1856 Jessie 26 Sept 1857 John 4 Sept 1859 William 23 July 1861 Isabella 30 Sept 1863 Mary Jane 15 July 1865 James 10 Nov 1867 Robert 23 Dec 1869 2. John Grant (b 1828) m. #Isabella WALKER (born c1828) 18 Feb 1876 in Forres Children (all born Forres) 3.John WALKER (later GRANT) 31 Aug 1873 (my gr grandfather) Edward Grant WALKER (later GRANT) 15 March 1875 Elsie 27 Feb 1877 George 10 March 1879 Peter 12 March 1882 3. John Walker GRANT (b1873) m. Mary Agnes MORRISON (b1872) in Glasgow 6 children all born in Glasgow #Isabella WALKER (b circa 1828 in Alves, Elgin) was born to Alexander WALKER and ^Margaret FIMISTER (b1804) and she had at least one sibling, Alexander, born 1844. ^Margaret FIMISTER (b 13 Sept 1804) was born in Kinloss, to Alexander FIMISTER and Margaret SMITH. She was one of at least five children, all born in Kinloss. They were John b 1796 Alexander b 1797 Elizabeth b 1800 Margaret b 1804 (as above) William b 1806 I also have some information on *George GRANT (b.1841) who married Mary MCDONALD (b1840) in Edinburgh in 1865 and then had 5 children (that I know of) and moved around in Lanarkshire and ended up in Paisley. I believe when he was in Paisley, he may have been a baker? and had at least one GRANT nephew from Forres living with him. I would love to hear from anyone with connections to any branch of these families. I am also looking for more information about my gr grandfather's two half brothers through Isabella Walker. I will post their names separately when I have more... My gggrand uncle, JOHN STUART, was born in 1783 in Speymouth according to grant applications filed in New Brunswick in 1814. JOHN STUART, who never married, was joined in 1816 in New Brunswick by his 10-year old nephew, his brother's son, CHARLES STUART (my gggrandfather). JOHN STUART's unmarried sister, MAY, also lived with them in Canada. In his obituary, CHARLES STUART was listed as having been born in "Sutherland Shire, Scotland" in 1806. Other family names include Alexander, Mary, Margaret. I join in on your thanks to the fascinating people on this list who I enjoy learning from! Susan in California >

    3. Re: Mary's question about schools in Enzie, Anne suggested: > I wonder whether the book on Banffshire schools and schoolmasters > would help? I was at ANESFHS today and looked it up. There appear, at various times, to have been schools at Cowfurrach (SPCK), Craiglug ('a dame school'), at Smerick Cottage (also a 'dame school'), Slackhead (Free Church, but apparently RC children also attended), Arradoul (supported by the 'big hoose' at Cairnfield), Shielburn, Clochan, and Portgordon. The author occsionally refers to school logs, but only for those schools which operated after 1870. Gavin Bell

Mary wrote: > My Cunningham ancestors from Slackhead in the Rathven/Enzie area > seemed to have been illiterate although I believe there was a good > standard in schools at the time(mid 19th century). > can anyone tell me what the local school would be ... I don't know about quality, but as regards quantity of educational opportunity, the 'New Statistical Account' article on Rathven (written March 1842) states: "The number of the schools in the parish is fourteen. Six of these are endowed [ie the salary of the teacher was paid out of parish funds] and the other eight are supported by fees." Annoyingly, the names and locations of these schools are not given. There are additional uncertainties in that (1) since 1835, the western end of the parish (including Slackhead) had become the 'quoad sacra' parish of Enzie, which had separate Registers of Baptism and Marriage. I have not been able to find out whether it had an independent school. (2) the Enzie area contained a high proportion of Roman Catholics, and again, I do not know what separate educational provision they may have made. To return to the 'New Statistical Account', which continues (in slightly self-contradictory terms): "In an extensive parish of this kind, it cannot be very easily ascertained what number of the young, betwixt six and fifteen years of age, cannot read or write. There are few, if any, who are not able to read; but a considerable number cannot write." This latter may well have been the situation of your ancestors. They will probably have been taught enough to be able to read the Bible, but in some schools (particularly 'adventure' schools, where the teacher depended entirely on fees to make a living) being taught to write cost extra. > ...and whether any school records/teachers reports survive. It is unusual for school records to survive earlier than the introduction of state schooling in the 1870s. > If so where are they kept? because of the complicated administrative history of the Northeast, it could be either Aberdeen City Archives or Moray Archives. 3. Is anyone studying the DUFFs, Earls of Fife, founders of Dufftown, MPs for Banff and builders of Duff House.? I am particularly interested to know about the household at Duff House in the late 1700s and early 1800s and if there are any records of the servants. I have read the gravestone in Banff of John HARDEN, at Duff House and am keen to find any others who were in service to the DUFFs. Banff Cemetery : (236) Sacred to the memory of John Harden of Ardyne, who died at Duff House on the 31st day of December, 1810, in his 61st year. Universally esteemed for the uniform propriety and incorruptible integrity that marked his conduct during forty years that he was employed in the service of the late James and Alexander, Earls of Fife. (Thanks to Gordon Troup) Best Wishes, Jane
