Wm Hardie born 3/12/1772 and Eliz Smout, they married on 24/11/1792. I believe that their daughter Margaret was married to my partner's G G Grandfather William Brown. Is this the same family? Or was this just "miscellanious" info you gathered up? Fiona

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: SMOUT SMOLLET JOASS HARDIE CRUICKSHANK Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ReC.2ACI/2785.4 Message Board Post: Whilst researching the parentage of John HARDIE or HARDY who married my 2xgt-gdmother Janet CRUICKSHANK, I came across the family in Alvah of William HARDY/HARDIE & Elizabeth SMOLLET/SMOUT. I also discovered that the surname SMOUT in at least one situation became SMOLLET; my original notes proving this are presently too thoroughly buried to dig them out but I daresay a review of the IGI will show this fairly convincingly. The Alvah OPR has: 1. "John L. S. [lawful son] of William HARDIE & Elizabeth SMOUT in Kirktown of Alvah was born 19th day of April & baptized 16 April 1797. Witnesses Mr Alexr MILNE(S?) Schoolmaster of Alvah and John SIM in Manderless" - Alvah OPR 19-4-1797. 2. "John L. S. of John HARDIE & Martha SMITH in Mains of Dunlugas was born & baptized April 13th. Witnesses Alexander JOASS & John GREIG both in Mains of Dunlugas." - Alvah OPR 13-4-1793. Hope this helps. Howard

    3. Hi everyone I have had some emails asking what the Libindx is. This is the online library index of genealogical references provided by Morayshire Councils Local Heritage Service and covers many parishes including those from Moray and some ones from Banff. Try the following web sites for more information. they are very helpful. http://www.moray.gov.uk/LocalHeritage/Assets/html_pages/morayheritage.html http://www.moray.gov.uk/LocalHeritage/Assets/html_pages/tracing_roots.html http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp You just may find that elusive branch of your tree! 3. Hi everyone Its been a while since I have looked at my names from Banffshire and Morayshire, but after another search of the Libindex, there are a number of my OLIVE ancesters newspaper death notifications on it and also references to headstones. Would someone be kind enough to tell me how I would get copies of the newspaper articles and MI's that the Lidindex has come up with. Thanks Julia M Mudd Dundee, Scotland Researching: OLIVE, DAVIDSON, SIVERIGHT, YOUNIE in Banffshire/Morayshire

I suspect that will have been Christopher SMOUT, an eminent historian of Scotland - but he is (notoriously) an Englishman who has gone native, so that doesn't help much.

Well, I had a tutor named Smout when I was at university, and I have in my tree a family whose surname is spelled variously as Joss or Joass. The IGI http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true has 447 listings of Joss/Joass in Banffshire, and 84 for Smout. LIBINDX http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp has 56 Joss and 3 Smout listings. HTH Anne

    3. > I am looking for any information regarding > Evelyn Helen Mclachlan c 1928 Ballindalloch > > I would really like to know if she is still alive. > If not then a death date and possibly a marriage after1955 Even if I knew, I would not put information about living people online in a mailing list. There are two ways of approaching this. You could write a letter to the editor of the local paper asking for information. The local paper is the Northern Scot, 74-76 South Street, Elgin IV30 1JG or e-mail admin@northern-scot.co.uk Altenartively, you could get an Edinburgh-based researcher to check the marriage and death records to see if she married and/or died. There are links to lists of researchers on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk HTH Anne

    1. Earls of Fife
    2. With reference to the recent correspondence on servants of the Earls of Fife, I have just come across one in Macduff: Here lie interred the remains of Margaret Turnbul who departed this life on the 27th October, 1808 in the 85th year of her age. She was a servant in the family of Fife for 65 years; and, as a testimony of her faithful services during that long period, this stone is erected by James, the present Earl of Fife. This was the first person to be buried in Macduff. Elizabeth Gabriel

    2. Mary
    3. Dear Listers, My granny's cousin Elspeth Ann Chalmers wa born in Port Tannachy, Enzie in 1875, but went to live in Main Street, Buckie when her mother remarried in 1881 the widower David Mair. Elspeth did not marry and died of bowel cancer in 1854 in Seafield Hospital , Buckie. Her home address being Wilson's Avenue, Buckie. So for all of her adult life she lived in Buckie. Alas I know nothing at all about her. Does anyone? 1854 seems not so long ago, and I hope someone from the area may recall something about her. Her step brother's and sisters may well have had children. Please could the good folk of Buckie wrack their brains and see if they can recall anything that may help me picture her life. Mary
