    3. Joanne While I can't help with your enquiry about the descendents of John Mitchell in Dufftown, I was wondering if you have any information about his ancestors. I have a Jane or Jean Mitchell, born in Knockando, Moray in 1796, daughter of James Mitchell and Janet McDonald. They had two other daughters born in Knockando and one born in Ross-shire. The family lived for some time in Aberlour and Mortlach before Jean married and emigrated to Australia. However, the parish records for Mortlach (Dufftown) show three sons of James Mitchell and Jean McDonald born about the same time. They were Alexander, born 1806, William, 1808, and James 1813. I have been unable to establish whether they are brothers of my Jean, daughter of James Mitchell and Janet McDonald. Is there any connection between one of these three brothers and your John Mitchell, grandfather perhaps? I can do no better than repeat here what Elizabeth Gabriel posted on the Banffshire List (where your postings are repeated automatically): "There are no on-line records. Burial registers are kept by the local Registrar at Seafield House, 37 Castle Street, Banff AB45 1FQ, tel. 01261 813439. They charge you £15 to search the registers yourself. If you know names and rough dates they will do searches for you, but it will cost. Records are not indexed and come under lair owners, so unless you have definite information it is not very practicable. But ring her and see what she says." I have seen and used the Burial Register; if I recall correctly, it dates from about 1866, presumably from when the cemetery first "opened for business".

For a long time I have been wanting to find out if there is a new Banff cemetery and if so if some of my ancestors are buried there. Your recent post indicated that there is a new Banff Cemetery. I have found my GGG grandmother Barbara Joass (wife of James Smith Gardener in Banff) and my GGGG grandparents William Joass and Marjery Stewart buried in the old Banff cemetery and would love to know if any of the family are buried in the New Banff Cemetery. I have not been able to find anything about this cemetery on the Net unless it is listed under a different name. Can you tell me how I can find out about this cemetery and who is buried there as coming from NZ I cannot physically go there to find it. Many thanks Denise Adamson

I will check all this out and let you know if it's right or not. Thanks again. Fiona

Here's most what else I have. I should think, but I haven't attempted to confirm, that these two families are headed by brothers. The Alvah MIs already mentioned which by now like me you've already looked up no doubt (#15 [Anne SHERRES, James SMOUT 15 Mar 1779], #16 [Alexander COLVILLE, James SMOLLET 16 Nov 1795, Elizabeth DUFFES 30 Apr 1831], #35 [Janet SMOUT, George SMITH 20 Feb 1750]) may show even older Smout/Smollet relatives. When I last looked, the IGI had: A. William Hardie & Elizabeth Smout m 24-9-1792 or 24-11-1792 Alvah (the IGI has both dates). Their family:- at Alvah, parents William Hardy & Elizabeth Smollet: born 21-1-1794 bpt 23-1-1794 Isabel Hardy all bpt at Alvah to parents William Hardie & Elizabeth Smout: 12-4-1795 Mary Hardie 16-4-1797 John Hardie 14-4-1799 William Hardie 26-7-1801 James Hardie 19-2-1804 Margaret Hardie There is no doubt in my mind that this is all one family. B. John Hardie & Martha Smith m 5-8-1792 Alvah: Their family: b 13-4-1793 bpt 13-4-1793 John Hardie at Alvah b 24-11-1794 bpt 30-11-1794 Anne Hardie at Alvah b 18-12-1797 bpt 20-12-1796 Mary Hardie at Alvah bpt 13-10-1798 Martha Hardie at Alvah bpt 19-5-1801 William Hardie at Alvah bpt 4-8-1803 Christian Hardie at Alvah bpt 3-3-1806 Alexander Hardie at Alvah bpt 20-10-1809 James Hardie at Alvah bpt 14-10-1812 Hans Hardie at Alvah. [In 1881 he was at Protstonhill Gamrie, crofter 5½ ac ar (69 iso 68), with wife Agnes (61) and daughter Mary (25) both from Gamrie (155-A-3-2).] 'My' John HARDY could be either one of the two families above. He died as John HARDY on 13-Jul-1871 age 78y 3m (which implies that he is the son of John HARDIE & Martha SMITH) with his father named by his step-daughter as William HARDY a gardener (which implies that he is the son of William HARDIE & Elizabeth SMOUT); he is buried in the new cemetery at Banff as John HARDIE age 79. Therefore, yer pays yer money and yer takes yer choice as to his parentage. I gave up at this point, because he isn't related to me! But maybe you know what happened to other children of Wm HARDY & Eliz SMOUT? The life of John HARDY may be as complicated as his (common-law?) wife Janet CRUICKSHANK. I think he had a (illeg?) son John HENRY who married Charlotte GRANT on 22-Nov-1848 in Alvah - they had a couple of children variously surnamed HENRY / HENERY / HENDRY. Howard

Church records have many other variations as Myren, Mylau, etc.. even Moran......but these are obviously misspellings. The International Genealogical Index lists James Miron b. abt.1810 and Michael Miron, B 1811 in Kilinane, Bagenalstown Co. Carlow. Church records in that area list both Miron and Myron and on the Baganelstown Web site is listed two natives Thomas and Michael Myran killed by the British in the 1794 uprising.. Gr.Grandfather's gravestone reads MIRON as well as Ann (Kinsella) MIRON, his wife. His son, my grandfather's gravestone reads James MYRON. His other son Thomas's stone reads MIRON, and his third son Patrick's stone reads MYRON.
