My 7th G-grandfather was Robert Duff of Hillockhead. He was born sometime between 1660 - 1675 most likely, and died in 1754. He shows up on the 1696 Census living there with his three sons, Robert, Thomas, and John. Robert was my 6th G-Grandfather. He was a minister (Anglican) in Abelour. He died in 1738 there. He was married to Isabel Innes of Culgvoich. They had 5 children: Patrick (a minister at St. Machars in Aberdeen, where he is burried), William (a minister at Foveran (north of Aberdeen)) (my 5th G-grandfather), John, Mary, and Margaret. Seems they should at least be related to your group.

Since posting my message, I purchased the 1871 census of my great grandmother - Jane Smith. On the 1881 census she was listed with 4 sons - James Shepherd, John Lobban Shepherd, George Shepherd and Alexander Smith Shepherd, but no father of the children living with her. I had hoped I would find him living with her on the 1871 census, but no luck. On 1871 census she resided at #39 ? Street, Huntley with James (age 2) and another unexpected son William Cruickshank (age 4.) But even more interesting, at #41 was the family of a John Lobban, wife Margaret and 4 sons James, George, John and Alexander. My belief is that this family were a great assistance to Jane and her 2 sons and consequently she gave her 4 boys the names of the Lobban's 4 boys. I have now traced Jane's parents and grandparents without encountering the Lobban name, so their is possibly no family connection. I guess it is possible that a sibling of her parents could hav! e married a Lobban. I have not traced other children of her parents - John Smith and Jean Anderson. But, for the time being I am satisfied to know how the Lobban name fit within my family tree.

I think you need to get someone to check the death registers in New Register House in Edinburgh to check whether or not he died in Scotland. The indexes are online until 1955, and after that you have to go to Edinburgh or a registrar's office where they have access to the same system. There are links on the SP site to lists of professional searchers who would do this for you. HTH Anne

Surnames: cumming, Sivewright, Seivewright, Seivwright, Barron, Stevenson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ReC.2ACI/2789 Message Board Post: I am looking to track down descendants of or anyone who knows anything about my long-lost great uncle who stayed behind in Scotland when the rest of his siblings, mother and step-father emigrated to Canada in 1922-23. My great grandmother was Christina R. Seivwright, born 1882 in Cullen, Banffshire, Scotland to Alexander Seivewight & Ann Gordon. I have recently discovered that before she was married to my great-grandfather, she had a son illegitimately. His name was Alexander Sievewright Cumming (the father was William Brodie Cumming born 16 May 1874 in Fordyce, Banffshire to George Cumming & Margaret Stevenson). Alexander was known as "Sandy" and he was born 13 September 1902 at Seafield, Rathven, Banffshire. I had always just thought that "Sandy" was the older (full-blood) brother of my grandfather, and therefore had the Barron surname, so I was always looking in wrong places. Christina married my great-grandfather Alexander Walker Barron on 2 June 1905 at Rathven, Banffshire. At the time of their marriage, Alexander W. Barron was living on North Castle street in Cullen and was employed as a coachman. Christina resided in Seafield, Rathven and was employed as a fishmonger and domestic servant. He had served as a Bombardier in the 53rd Battery of the Royal Field Artillery in the Boer War and was still with the Royal Field Artillery in 1914. In 1917, he was Sergeant 85525 with the Fife Yeomanry. Alexander W. Barron & Christina R. Seivwright had several children: John Walker Barron (born 6 August 1905 at 49 Seafield Street, Cullen, Banffshire, Scotland. He served with the 48th Highlanders of Canada during WWII. He died in Toronto, Ontario, Canada), Mary Isabella Barron (born 17 March 1907 at 28 Reidhaven Street, Cullen, Banffshire, Scotland. Died in Owen Sound, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada), Alice Gordon Barron (born 12 April 1909 at Forgieside, Boharm, Banff-shire, Scotland. Died of cancer in the late 1940's in Toronto, Ontario, Canada), George Brian Tore Barron who was my grandfather (born 24 December 1914 at 36 Pennan Village, Aberdour, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Died 24 December 1988 at Perth Community Care Centre, Perth, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada), Joseph Colin Barron (born 4 December 1917 at 21 Bristo Street, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Died tragically in the early 1990's in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He served with the 48th Highlanders of Canada during WWII), Anne Barron (born in 1920 in Scotland, although we cannot locate a birth record for her there. She is still living in Toronto, Ontario, Canada). Alexander W. & Christina R. (Seivwright) Barron and all of their children, except "Sandy" left Scotland and settled in Toronto, Ontario, Canada about 1922-23 when they are found in the Toronto directory. They kept in touch with "Sandy" regularly until the years around WWII, when they lost contact. We've always assumed that he died serving in WWII, but he cannot be found on the Commonwealth Graves website. I realize that by the time that they lost touch he may not have even been living in Scotland anymore. I have no idea where to go next with my search. If anyone has any information at all on my grandfathers long-lost half-brother, Alexander "Sandy" Sievewright Cumming or how I could go about finding out what happened to him please contact me. This has always been a huge family mystery and my goal is to solve it before the last of my grandfather's generation passes away (his youngest sibling, Ann is still alive). I can be contacted at: 11 Coldstream Drive, Munster, Ontario, Canada, K0A 3P0 and my email address is rothycat@hotmail.com Thanks so much for taking the time to read my story and consider my request for assistance. She became a bond servant to someone > while in her > early > teens and died at age 14 according to family lore. I've seen > no death > record for her and the orphanage has no more records for that > early. Well. You don't say when she was born, or what her parents' names were. Is she the one aged 3, with brothers Daniel, 10, Thomas, 5 and John, 2? If so .... I note from the IGI at www.familysearch.org that John Hunter, son of John Hunter and Catherine Fraser, was born 4 March 1879 in Edinburgh; and that there was a marriage of a John Hunter to Catherine Fraser in Edinburgh on 25 June 1875; and that Daniel Fraser, son of Catherine Fraser, was born in Edinburgh on 4 March 1871. From the free index on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk I see that a Catherine Hunter or Fraser, aged 30, died in 1882. So if Kate was aged 3 in the 1881 census, she must have been born in 1877 or the first quarter of 1878. So she would have turned 14 in 1891 or 1892. Have you found her in the 1891 census? That would seem to me to be the next logical step. It would give you an indication of where she might have died. I see that there are two records on Scotland's People of Catherine Hunters born 1874-1881 and died 1891-1901. Have you checked both of those deaths and eliminated them? How confident are you that she actually died aged 14? Could she have gone into service aged 14 and died an unspecified time later? Ages from 'family lore' are notoriously unreliable. Do you know how the children came to be placed in Aberlour, so far from their home in Edinburgh? If the children were left destitute at their mother's death, it may be that they fell to the Parish Board to look after. Have you looked to see if there are extant Parish Board records from Edinburgh? If not that may be one avenue you could follow. Start with the Edinburgh City Archives http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/internet/a-z/AZ_archive HTH Anne

I've seen no > death record for her and the orphanage has no more records for that > early. As an orphan, she would have become the resposibility of the Poor law Board for the parish where she lived (or possibly for the parish where she was born, if that was different). Orphans could be boarded-out in the community, or sent to the Poor House, but the Poor Law Board for the appropriate parish retained overall responsibilty for their welfare, and will have kept records. There are three different places among the Poor Law records where information on Kate/Milly/Catherine would have been noted: (1) The "Record of Applications", which records all claims on the Poor Law, whether or not the claim was eventually allowed. (2) The "General Register of the Poor", which records (for successful applicants) how they were initially disposed of, and any changes to their allowances or other circumstances, until such time as they either died or were judged to be no longer in need of support. (3) The "Childrens' Separate Register" in which additional information was kept on under-age recipients. (4) The 'Minutes' of the Poor Law Board. These are very variable, and sometimes say little more than that the Board approved the accounts submitted by the Inspector of the Poor (the official who, in each parish, administered the Poor Law), but some Boards were more 'hands-on' and the Minutes will include discussion of individual named cases. Not all of these records have survived for all parishes, but all entries in (1) and (2) have been indexed by name for each parish by volunteers from Aberdeen and Northeast Scotland FHS (I did Banffshire!), and copies of this Index are held both by ANESFHS (www.anesfhs.org.uk) and by Aberdeen City Archives, who hold the original Registers. You don't say what parish Kate/Milly/Catherine came from. This is fairly important, as that will tell us where to look for her in the Poor Law records. If she happened to be from Aberlour, then only item (1) has survived for the relevant time-span, but there are more complete records (or, unfortunately, no records at all) for some other parishes. 2. Hello Michelle, There are records available for those who died at Aberlour orphanage, this is most likely one of the children you are looking for. Thomas Hunter Bachelor aged 9 years father John Hunter died at Aberlour orphange on 16th of May 1884, cause of death is given as Mesenteric disease. the informant was C. Jupp. Their was also a John Hunter who was aged 9 years on the 1891 census living at the Aberlour orphanage, he was born in Orkney, may have been no relation to your line. I don't know where your Hunter's came from. I would say that i have checked the records for the Aberlour orphanage for those who died there but your Kate is not there. I hope this is of some help to you in your research. Regards ray
