    3. My ggaunt Kate-Maitland HUNTER, also known as Catherine and Kate and Milly was in Aberlour in the 1880's with her 3 brothers. She was born 1877 in Edinburgh. I have their orphanage records and birth records however Kate disapears here. I have looked on ScotlandsPeople and not found who I believe is her. The family story, told by John, is that she was a bond servant. I have looked in the immediate area around the orphanage but don't see her. My next thought is court records or some record of her "crime" that brought her to be a bond servant. This would quicken my search. Do such records exist? Michelle

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ReC.2ACI/2805.1 Message Board Post: Hi Christy, Your query has been passed onto me by a friend in Oz. I am something of an expert on the Fletts of Findochty, (Rathven Parish) and will do some research for you in my own archive sources. Bullen was a tee-name (a family by-name to differentiate the various common names like Flett, Smith, Murray Cowie etc etc). The mother would have been Margaret Cowie, "Bullen" and the custom back then was to drop the actual surname and just refer to people by their teename. There was a marriage between an Alexander Flett & a Margaret Cowie on 30/6/1831. The 1841 census shows a son Alex aged 3 then. I'll do a lot more digging and let you have what I find if you will let me have an email address as this is probably noot the right medium for all the detail. You can "meet" us at http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/sheena_charles/ Charles Flett

I think I found him at age 10 as a servant, in the household of WIlliam (age 37) and Jane (age 46) Simpson, along with William's father in law, John(76) Simpson. I can't prove this is the right James, but his age is 10 years less than his 1861 census, which I'm reasonably confident is him. If anyone knows anything about this family, I would be quite grateful for the help.

    1. 18th Century Marriage Rules
    2. Anne Burgess
    3. I was looking through the Speymouth Parish Register and came across the following: I found it both instructive and amusing. Things don't change much! Directions anent matrimonial contracts in the parish of Speymouth. 1. No contracts are to be allowed on Saturdays. 2. No elder is to contract except in absence of the Session Clerk. 3. The bride-groom and the bride shall each of them consign three pounds Scots money or pledge to that value for which the Session Clerk shall be accountable to the Session, and if he neglect this it shall be accounted in part payment of his fee and the pledge shall be consigned the very day of the contract. 4. Before the second proclamation the bridegroom and bride, if they have lived out of the parish, are to deliver their testimonials and also to concert with the minister anent the place and time of their marriage (which must be within forty days after the day of contract) and this ought to be done before the day of marriage be determined to avoid fixing it on a day when the Synod or Presbytery do meet. 5. Any unseemly and scandalous behaviour betwixt persons contracted forfeits the pledge to the Session. 6. If there be any drinking after ten o'clock at night in a publick [sic] house, or where ale is sold, the day of the contract or marriage, the pledges will be forfeit and it will be no excuse to the married persons to alledge [sic] that this was done by the fault of the owners of the house or persons invited since the bridegroom and bride should take care where they have their entertainment and whom they invite so as to answer for their behaviour. 7. The first Session that meets after the marriage is over will appoint the pledges to be given up if they are not forfeit. 8. These directions are to be read over to the bridegroom and bride at every contract and the minister acquainted the first opportunity. Novr 24, 1742 At marriages and contracts where meat is given for nothing abd aftewards drink sold for money the pledges will be forfeit but allowed of meat for money and drink for nothing. Anne Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never fail to be amused (Joachim Verhagen)

    2. Deb O'Reilly
    3. Hi Jen and Goldie Many thanks to both of you for the extensive replies you've sent regarding the John WATT families of Glass and Cabrach. At this time, it appears the John WATT families of Glass and Cabrach are two completely separate families, with the entry for William WATT, born Cabrach, and listed as "Brother" of James WATT on the 1851 Kinnethmont census, a red-herring. It could very well be that William WATT was the son of John WATT and Isobel TAYLOR of Cabrach, had been visiting/living/working with the James WATT family on 1851 census day, and the census enumerator, hearing his surname WATT, and with Lawrence already given as brother, possibly wrote 'brother' for William as well. Again, many thanks for your time and effort, and perhaps one day I can return the favor :-) Regards, Deb O'Reilly Midlothian, Viriginia USA home page: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/dcoreilly A&NESFHS #13005 WorldConnect at Rootsweb/Ancestry.com: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=dcoreilly Researching the Grassick and related families of Aberdeenshire

    3. Hello Listers, Cross-posted to ANESFHS, Aberdeen-Rootsweb & Banffshire-Rootsweb Was the family of John WATT and Isobel NAPIER, with 4 children (maybe more) 1809-1816 in Glass -- the same family as John WATT and Isobel TAYLOR, with 7 children 1820-1834 in Cabrach?  Or was it the same John WATT with a 2nd wife, also named Isobel?  Or two completely separate John WATT families? The reason I’m asking: I’ve made a connection (as usual not a direct connection but through a series of marriages), to the family of James WATT (b 1812 Glass), who married Ann GLENNIE (b 1816 Kinnethmont, daughter of William GLENNIE and Ann BOOTH of Matnach, Clatt).  (William 1781-1855 and Ann 1781-1865 were both born in Clatt; however, they resided in Kinnethmont until about 1831 when they returned to Clatt. Further, William GLENNIE had ties to Towie as his sister Mary was born/christened there in 1777.) For James WATT, on the 1851 Kinnethmont Census: Piece: SCT1851/212 Place: Kinnethmont-Aberdeenshire Enumeration District: 3 Civil Parish: Kinnethmont Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: - Folio: 159 Page: 1 Schedule: 3 Address: Craigtown     Surname   First name(s)   Rel   Status   Sex   Age   Occupation   Where Born   Remarks       WATT   James   Head   M   M   39   Journeyman Shoemaker    Aberdeenshire - Glass (Originally: Banffshire - Glass)            WATT   Anne   Wife   M   F   33       Aberdeenshire - Kinnethmont            WATT   Agnes   Dau   -   F   4       Aberdeenshire - Rhynie            WATT   John   Son   -   M   2       Aberdeenshire - Kinnethmont            WATT   Lawrence   Brothr   U   M   34   Journeyman Shoemaker    Aberdeenshire - Glass (Originally: Banffshire - Glass)            WATT   William   Brothr   U   M   30   Journeyman Carpenter    Aberdeenshire - Cabrach (Originally: Banffshire - Cabrach) LDS IGI is showing James & Lawrence birth/christening records at Glass with parents as John WATT and Isobel NAPIER/NEPER, but the only likely William WATT at Cabrach that I can come up with is son of John WATT and Isobel TAYLOR. I am inclined to think TAYLOR may be a loose translation/variant for NAPIER?  From Ancestry.com in its Name History & Origin section: Scottish: occupational name for a producer or seller of table linen or for a naperer, the servant in charge of the linen in use in a great house, Middle English, Old French nap(p)ier, an agent derivative of Old French nappe ‘table cloth’ (Latin mappa). I tried searching scotlandspeople for a death record for James but didn’t find one likely so didn’t view any of the records. Also didn’t find a likely death record for Ann (still living in 1855 according to her father’s death record).  Nor did I find James or Ann, or daughter Agnes b1847 Rhynie or son John b 1850 Kinnethmont, as well as James’ brothers Lawrence and William on the 1881 Scotland census cds.  Makes me wonder if the entire James WATT family emigrated out of Scotland? Any help deciphering or distinguishing between the two John WATT family groups and/or more info on the family of James WATT and Ann GLENNIE is greatly appreciated.
