There appears to be some connection through one of their parents to an Uncle named John Fraser. I have been unable to verify data on either of their parents. Jean Ross's Mother (when she was 85) came to the USA along with her son's Alexander and a John. One of the newspaper articles mentioned only her first initial "A" could be Ann??? He settled eventially in Orange Co., New York. I believe his father was Alexander Sutherland. I am told he had two brothers that came here with him. Can anyone make the connection to Scotland. I am playing with the idea that he was the son of Lord Alexander Duffus of Sutherland married to Margaret Forbes. The dates sort of fit and his situation in life, that is not rich but not poor, makes him a candidate for a younger son of a Lord. Hope for some help.

    3. Hi James, The Church Street I mentioned is in Portsoy (the Fordyce 1881 census reference of "153-2" is Portsoy village). I have references (at various times) to family staying at these locations in Church St Portsoy: nos 7,8,9,11,12,15,16,36, 50,54 and various unnumbered. The Church St in Fordyce doesn't seem to have been numbered in the records I have, being for 1901 and 1933 (the latter may be to Elmbank, which I think is actually East Church St). There's also been family-owned cottages named Hawthorn Cottage, The Yardies and Roseau which may be West Church St rather than Church St. Sandy Riach says (see recent posting) that the numbers in Church St changed over the years, so I wouldn't know at present how to relate a specific number at a specific date to a specific dwelling. Regards Howard

    3. Hi Howard, Loch Lane, I think is next to Roseacre Street and Loch Street. Durn Road is along from them and then its the Cullen Road (A98). It does exist as my father and my grandmothers cousin can testify. It leads down to Loch Soy. I am going to visit there tomorrow and take a few photo's I will also be visiting other addresses that I have links with. I know that Church Street numbers have changed and I'm going to try and get a copy of an old town plan (if they still exist). I need a look at the 1901 census also and that will be a visit to Elgin. From the CRE, I have found from the NAS that Elizabeth TAYLOR and George MCKENZIE were both working at Upper Blairock, Deskford in 1910-1911. There is also a William MCKENZIE father to Hannah TAYLOR's illegitimate daughter, Helen, could be related to the above George? I'll have look out for the other bits a pieces you have mentioned below. I have another for you, Elizabeth, my ggrandmother had another son, who went to New Zealand, by the name of William MITCHELL TAYLOR. He went there with his sister Jessie PIRIE TAYLOR and his cousin George TAYLOR. The went to North Island around Rotorua. I have been speaking to a cousin of my grandmother who gave me this information. I don't know if any of the listers can put me in touch with Elizabeth Lusby who is out there? 3. Hi James. Their marriage certificate should tell you their respective parents. My interest in this is through Mary F Murphy (see below), since I have an Alexander Murphy / Elspet Geddes family and Murphy is not a common name in the immediate area, and she and William Murphy are just about the only two outwith 'my' Murphy line; furthermore the names Robertson and McKenzie and Morrison and even Nicol all turn up in my search for my early Robertson/Moir/Geddes/Watson in Portsoy. What can you add? This is surely Angus Campbell in 1881: Dwelling: School Hendry, Fordyce (Portsoy), Banff, Scotland Volume 153-2 EnumDist 4 Page 31 Catherine NICOL M 41 F Inverness Wife (Head) Ag Labs Wife Betsy MORRISON U 16 F Inverness Dau Dom Ser * Mary F. MC KENZIE U 13 M Portsoy, Banff Son Scholar ** George ROBERTSON 6 M Portsoy, Banff Son Scholar ** Isabella G. MCKENZIE 3 F Portsoy, Banff Dau * Elizabeth Morrison was born 17-11-1865 Inverness to Donald Morrison and Catherine McIntosh, who married 22-5-1857 Knockbain, Ross&Cromarty. (So there must be other children - not checked.) * Mary Flora Murphy was born 4-2-1872 Fordyce to William Murphy and Catherine McIntosh, who married 10-12-1866 Keith (as William Murphy and Catherine Morison). As William Murphy and Catherine McIntosh they had two other children: Catherine Murphy 12-5-1867 Keith and Forbes Murphy 11-2-1868 Fordyce (presumably Portsoy). * It would seem that Catherine McIntosh married a third time, this time to a Nicol, and had another son. ** Alexander Ross McKenzie was born 6-2-1868 Fordyce to Isabella McKenzie, therefore I presume illeg. ** George Robertson was born 18-8-1874 Fordyce to Hugh Robertson and Isabella McKenzie, also presumably illeg for I have not found a marriage and I reckon the father turns up unmarried in 1881 boarding in Old Deer. I was indeed in Portknockie in 2000, when Davie Mair helped me find the wreck of my gt-gduncle James Watson's ship in the sand in Cullen Harbour, and I was in Cullen Cemetery talking to a Bob Geddes who was tending the area and very kindly brought out the Burial Register so I could find said James Watson's grave and MI. But I don't recall any visit to or meeting in Portknockie Cemetery! I don't have records of any of the people you mention. If I'm right James Geddes Wood and Caroline Mair appear in the 1881 census - he is a fisherman, born as James Wood on 28-1-1842 Portknockie to John Wood and Helen Wood. Since all my Geddes folks are farmfolk, I'm wondering if you're mistaking me for someone else?! Can you expand a bit - I simply cannot see any linkage at present and am certainly curious.
