    3. Dear Scott, My contribution to the Tiree story is below. Jessie Flora McLean married William Elliott and their daughter Matilda Elliott (aka Tily or Lily) born August 1, 1883 was my grandma. Still looking for her post 1904 when she left my father Walter Erwin Elliott aged 3yrs to be 'fostered' in Bruce County by David and Ann Ottewell of Wiarton. Good luck with the presentation now! Valerie --------------------------- Abt.1806 Hector MCLEAN born on Tiree. April 1834 A natural daughter Mary Bell McLean born to Hector McLean and Ann Brown July 1834 Hector McLean and Ann Brown are married in Mull. They are described as natives of Tyree and it is written in the book that: "Deciding that they were on their way to be married, were married 8 July, 1834." 1838 When John is born in 1838, Hector is a Boatman and Ann Brown is his wife. 1841 Mannal, Book 7 Hector (30) and Ann (30) McLEAN are living at Hynish Farm next to Mannal, Tiree with Mary Bell aged 6 yrs and Hector is a Fisherman. Has John died 1838 - 41? Hector and Ann given born 1807 - 1811: but later censuses indicate Ann born about 1818 and should maybe have been given 20 not 30. 1845-7 When Catharine and Ann Jane are born in 1845 & 1847, Hector is a Cottar. No longer a fisherman. 1846 Potato famine in Tiree 1849 Hector and Ann sail to Canada on the Charlotte to Montreal, June 30th 1849 with 4 daughters. This society represented a short-term response to a specific problem in a particular geographical area. The potato blight which brought on the Great Famine in Ireland earlier in the decade, struck the Isles and western Highlands in 1846. Sir Charles Trevelyan, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, became very interested in the problems of the Highlands. He properly saw emergency food supplies as a "useless palliative".
