For those of us who struggle trying to match baptism dates with ages recorded later in the 1841 census, the following message was posted by Angela McMurtry on the RootsWeb Argyll List and is copied here with her permission. Having recently been involved in the Free Census Project (1841) I can tell you that ages were not always rounded down to nearest 5 ........... The notes at the begining of 1841 Census read: For infants under one year of age state the number of months . From One year to 15 state the age at last birthday. For persons 15 years of age and upwards write as follows , instead of the exact age. For persons between the ages of : 15 & 20 write 15 20 & 25 write 20 25 & 30 write 25 ( and so on) I have done two 1841 pieces and have found the ages can be exact or rounded down , sometimes up !
