Hello everyone on the Tiree List, Since it's still January, I think I can just barely get away with sending out New Year's greetings, can't I? At the same time, though, I'm saddened to hear of Neil MacKinnon's passing. He was such a generous soul, sharing his photographs as he did. Last May, when I was launching the "Tiree Descendants in Manitoba" project in Brandon, Neil was so quick to make a special trip over to "Manitoba House" in Balephuill and arrange with the MacArthurs to take some wonderful photos of their place. There is a sign in their window that says "Manitoba" in remembrance of the McLeans who left that croft to become pioneers in Manitoba in 1878. One of these McLeans, Bard John McLean, married my grandfather's Aunt Flora McLean, so the photos were of special significance to me. My heartfelt condolences go out to Neil's family. In his generosity, Neil left a legacy of Tiree photographs that will long be treasured. Coincidentally, tomorrow, there is a remembrance ceremony happening in Brandon, Manitoba for "Canadian Fallen Heroes". It just so happens that two descendants of those "Manitoba House McLeans" will be honoured as war heroes. I will put the information about that project in a separate email.
