Re: Box Lunches, etc., etc. x-ScottFrom Archie's Scottish Delights Lunchbar ! Greetings famished pioneers. Welcome to Guelph! We need to know which lunch package and how many you wish to order for your lunch for Saturday, July 24, 2004. You may choose from beef (Aye, prized "Bruce" beef at that!), egg salad (probably from "Bruce" chickens) or tuna (from the "Lochs of Scotland" ?) along with a box of other goodies as listed below. So, what's it going to be? Let me know ASAP, order deadline no doubt at least one week prior to the Gathering. Hurray hard! We are ordering 100 boxes, if we need more so be it. Let me know today what you wish. Thank you. $ 10.00 per lunch box - includes sandwich (choose one), drink (choose one), cheese (Pine River!), date square .... all from the "Bruce" ! Beef Egg Salad Tuna Drink - you tell me - type of pop / water Cheers, Scott www.tireegathering.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For now, I think we should confirm the order for one hundred box lunches, then in two weeks time ask persons to order the number of boxes they want and the type of sandwich they would like. Perhaps they might be informed now that we were planning box lunches to allow for maximum meeting time at Harcourt and Royal City Park. Yours aye, A Subject: Box Lunches Gene, Archie's lass, has now worked out a price for Box Lunches for Saturday, July 24. A healthy boxed lunch will allow for maximum meeting time at Harcourt and Royal City Park. There can be a choice of beef, egg salad or tuna salad sandwich, date square, piece of cheese and a soft drink for $ 10.00 available at Harcourt and Royal City Park. We will order 100 boxes. This solves the problem of lunch for participants who will now be able to eat while meeting others, seeing displays, listening to the pipes, finding family on the wall, etc. and prevents standing in line for a meal. Yours aye, Archie ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have always had this picture in my mind." In the 1700s and 1800s, second (or third) marriages for men were not uncommon in Tiree, or more generally in the world, because of the death of women in or after childbith and consequently the father's need to find a way to care for his infant and young children. In the Scottish highlands & islands, poverty and its associated diseases, such as cholera and typhus, contributed to maternal and infant deaths. Life was pretty grim, and for men, battling to feed their families, there was no time to be a SNAG. My great-great-grandfather, John MacDonald, blacksmith and crofter of Balinoe, was typical. He had two families - two children by his first wife, Flora MacPhail, and nine children by his second wife, Flora Campbell. Flora MacPhail died in Tiree after the birth of her 2nd child, and Flora Campbell married in Tiree and died in Australia after the birth of her 9th child. Keith Dash Sydney, Australia
A couple of weeks ago, Louise asked if there had been a "census" or other population count for Tiree around the same time as the 1776 "Coll Kirk Session Records: List of the Inhabitants of the Island of Coll". The nearest is possibly the 1779 "Inhabitants of Argyle Estate", which included the whole of Tiree and parts of Mull and the mainland. Also, descriptions and population counts for Tiree and Coll in 1755, 1792/93 and 1843 were recorded in "The Statistical Account of Scotland", in entries written by the parish minister of the day. Some notes on the ownership of Tiree and Coll from the 1843 account by Rev. N. MacLean: "Tiree was formerly a part of the lands pertaining to the clan McLean, having been anciently granted to them, as is supposed, by the Lord of the Isles; and the name is still one of the most common in the island. It fell into the possession of the family of Argyle in the year 1674. Since that period, the Earl or Duke of Argyle has been the sole proprietor." "The middle and principal part of Coll is an ancient possession, the charter having been granted to John Garve, first laird of Coll, and predecessor of the present family, by King James II. The two extremities of that island, which were acquired by the Argyle family at the same time with Tiree, have been latterly sold by his Grace, and Coll is now possessed by three proprietors." _________________ Keith Dash Sydney, Australia
