    1. How you can display your genealogy for the Tiree Gathering
    2. Scott Cameron
    3. Dear Gathering folk, Here are the 3 ways that the Tiree Interconnections Project has organized for you to make your genealogy available at or before (or even after) the Gathering: 1. Family Tree Charts: These will be paper charts that will be taped up on the walls at the Gathering on Saturday. You can make them in advance and mail or email them for display. Or you can bring them along to the Gathering. In a pinch, you can even sketch one out by hand after you get to Guelph. Further instructions to follow in a separate email. 2. Family History Pages: These are short family stories for posting on the Internet. If submitted by email, they can be posted to the Tiree Rootsweb Mailing List and Archive as well as the Tiree Interconnections webpages. If you don't have email, you can mail or bring these to Guelph and they will be displayed in a binder (and perhaps later added to the webpages, but no promises about that). Further instructions to follow in a separate email. 3. The Tiree Family Tree on computer: For those of you who have your own family tree typed up in a genealogy software program (like Family Tree Maker, PAF, Legacy, etc.), you can submit a computer file (called a "gedcom") to the Tiree Family Tree. At last report the Tiree Tree was about 8,000 descendants strong. Russ will have it available for searching at the Gathering. For information about contributing your tree, contact Russ McGillivray at russ@tireegathering.com . Two more emails to come.please watch for them! I'm on my way to the post office now to get a money order on its way. I think one of my gr-grandmother's brothers may have ended up in your area. Her name was Flora McDougall Hannah, born and raised on Tiree. Her parents were Duncan McDougall (from Mull) and Catherine McDonald -- Balinoe. (I'm a third cousin of Keith McDonald Dash.) She left Tiree and lived about 20 years in the Glasgow and Edinburgh areas before coming to the USA, arriving in NYC on May 1, 1867, with 3 children in tow. Her husband had come in 1866, via Nova Scotia, working his way south in search of employment to earn money to bring his family across the ocean. I think Flora must have about 300 descendants here in the States. At our family gatherings when I was a child there were about 100 people in attendance. I have 30 first cousins; Flora's other two children had families also. By now we have three more generations wandering the countr! yside. Since I have 5 children, 12 grandchildren and 6 gr-grandchildren, I figure 300 is a conservative estimate. Aren't you glad we aren't all descending upon you!! I'll look forward to receiving the book. Thanks again! Genie --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    1. Guelph Mercury - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - Island's descendants gathering in Guelph
    2. Scott Cameron
    3. Guelph Mercury - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 http://www.guelphmercury.com/index.html Island's descendants gathering in Guelph GUELPH (Jul 7, 2004) Two years from now descendants of a tiny island off the west coast of Scotland will return to their roots --but not before they meet for the first time in Guelph. In just two weeks hundreds of people from around the world who can trace their roots to the Isle of Tiree will descend upon the Royal City to celebrate their heritage. "This is one of the very few descendent gatherings in the world," said Scott Cameron, who began organizing Guelph's Tiree Gathering about 18 months ago. It is believed to be the first time anyone has attempted to unite descendants of the island's original inhabitants, who were forced to emigrate more than 150 years ago because of famine. The Guelph gathering is expected to draw 200 to 300 people, including eight of the island's approximately 750 residents. The island is also planning its own gathering for 2006, and will be looking to Guelph for ideas. "Guelph was one of the jumping off points for a lot of immigrants in the 1800s," Cameron said, explaining the connection. While they originally came into Canada through Quebec, they made their way to Guelph and eventually settled in the counties of Bruce and Grey, in areas like Kincardine and Southampton. Archie MacKinnon is one of a handful of Tiree descendants living in Guelph. He and his wife Gene made their first trip to the island in 1955. Pride in his heritage is evidenced by the personalized licence plate on MacKinnon's van. It reads Tyree, reflecting the island's original spelling. MacKinnon said he is excited by the prospect of connecting with people who share a similar past. Once he started researching his roots he was hooked. The internet has allowed Tiree descendants from around the world to connect."It isn't just a heritage, it's something of a disease," he said with a laugh. The Guelph gathering takes place July 23 to 25 with a number of events at various locations. There are evening ceilidhs, workshops, presentations and a chance to meet other descendants. Looking for Australian Tirisdeachs ! . . . as per below from Ian Lamond Cheers, Scott . . . 18 days to go! www.tireegathering.com nb - Archie and I attended the Kincardine Scottish Festival promoting the Gathering via posters thanks to Guelph's MacKinnon Transport and Leanne's flyers. At the Gathering, of which is it reported thousands were in attendance Archie and I had the chance to meet many that are interested in the Gathering. I in my kilt marched to and fro in the parade on the main street in Kincardine carrying the Gathering banner high above my head for all to notice. Bye for now. Scott PS - we welcome all "'nuisance' last minute registrants" ! I have been hoping to get to the gathering myself ( Tiree ancestry), but as I overstayed in my visit to Tiree & other parts of the UK last year things are NOT looking to good for me even at this late stage & if I do make it at all, I will of necessity probably & unfortunately now be one of those 'nuisance' last minute registrants ( been THERE, & coped with them myself on administrations of World Congresses, when a very younger man !). I also had hoped to get in touch with a few fellow Australians so that we could converse. If you can help at all I would be very grateful, indeed. Thanking you & wishing you all the very best in your preparations & execution, Yours Sincerely, Ian Lamond/t, "Meryla Lodge", Bowral, NSW 2576,Australia. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    3. Just wanted to let you all know about an excellent new site: May 31, 2004: "In partnership with the Friends of the Archives of Ontario, we are pleased to present the Toronto Emigrant Office Assisted Immigration Registers Database. This online database is an index to the four volumes of assisted immigration registers, commonly known as the Hawke Papers, created by the Toronto Emigrant Office between 1865 and 1883 (series RG 11-3). The registers present a chronological listing of those new immigrants who were assisted by the government to travel to many different destinations across southern Ontario. Over 29,000 entries have been transcribed from the registers." http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/db/hawke.htm It's probably not early enough for most of our ancestors but worth a search. 1. Times of London
    2. Ann Hentschel
    3. The Times of London website is normally a paying website but about two months ago a library in the States had a "Free Week" for Library Week. This was taken off after giving a couple of weeks extension but someone found a "back-door" to the website and this is still available to search. This is the website: http://infotrac.galegroup.com/itweb/free4_tda?id= . The password is "trial" in lower case and no capitals. You may have to try it a couple of times to get in. It's fantastic. I have spent hours and hours searching on this website and never thought to try searching for the "Isle of Tiree". Searching for "Tiree" or "Tyree" brings up hundreds of hits. The articles are there but you have to search through hits that are people with the surname Tiree or Tyree. When you do a search change the dot below the search box from Titles to Entire Article Content. Here are a few hits I copied down: Picture Gallery - March 24, 1973: The "Loch Seaforth" sinking alongside the jetty at Scarinish, Tiree. March 5, 1949: Tiree harbour at Scarinish showing the schooner "Mary Stuart", the last trading schooner on the Scottish coast. Scottish Equestrations - November 30, 1831: Niel McLachlan, Ballaphetrish, Tyree trader, Dec. 14, Jan. 4 at New Inn, Tobermory. Deaths - Aug. 9, 1862: On the 27th July at Baleletrish, Tiree. N.B. To the inexpressible grief of his family and relations, Neil, the beloved and eldest son of Colin Campbell, Esq. of Caresig, in his 18th year. Death - May 15, 1928: At Island House, Hugh MacDiarmid, age 83 years. Ecclesiastical News: Baptist. The Rev. J. Taylor has resigned the pastorate on the Island of Tiree, Argyll Dec. 16, 1939. Marriage - Jan. 15, 1954: Mr. H. Campbell and Miss H.M. Wille. The engagement is announced between Hector, son of Mr. & Mrs Neil Campbell of Tiree, Argyll, and Helen daughter of Mr. & Mrs Eduard Wille, of Nottingham Road, Natal. 1. LDS 1881 British Census CDs
    2. Ann Hentschel
    3. Hello Everyone: I've just been searching the 1881 Census for Tiree families and was wondering if everyone is familiar with the "Advanced Query" Search. This will give you the names of the people born in Tiree but living elsewhere in 1881. I tried this "Advanced Query" Search on the 1881 Canadian Census CDs but unfortunately it only gives "Scotland" as the birthplace. For those of you that have the LDS 1881 British Census CDs with Version 4 Viewer these are the instructions: Using Disc 1 - Scotland Region Highlands Counties and Disc 2 - Scotland Region Lowlands Counties. 1. Cancel the "Search Box" that comes up. 2. Go to "Search" on the top toolbar. 3. On the drop-down go to "Neighbors-Advanced Query" 4. Using the Search Box at the bottom key in "tiree" with the quotation marks with no spaces. Last quotation mark first. If you want to see all the people living in Tiree in 1881 you can just do the normal search using: Birthplace: County Argyll City or Town: Tiree Don't fill in a name and it will give you everyone. If you are interested in all the people born in Scotland try the "Advanced Query" on the 1881 Canadian Census CDs. Good hunting, Ann Hentschel, Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). The Macleans, who were a clan as early as 1250, claim descent from an Irish king a thousand years or so earlier. So proud, indeed, were they of their ancient origin that when a stranger ironically inquired of a clansman how his ancestors had contrived to survive the Flood (re: Noah's Ark), he received the haughty reply, " The Macleans had a boat of their own." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It goes something like this: The MacLeans are a very old family and were seafarers from long, long ago. They go back so far as the Great Flood mentioned in the Bible. However, they weren't on Noah's ark, they had a boat of their own! These are probably not the original words of that tale, but this is the gist of it. Hope this helps. 3. Aye, great question Barb. Maybe someone can reply with the information. I too am interested in such. Cheers, Scott ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ----- Original Message ----- From: bob&Barb To: Scott Cameron Sent: Friday, July 02, 2004 9:16 AM Subject: Ship information > S.S. Conrad - 1851 Good Morning Scott! I have been avidly following all of the information that kinsmen have been seeking and providing for all to read. I have a question that someone out there may have an answer to. In 1851 my G.G. grandparents, Colin McMillan and Catherine MacLean, sailed on the S.S. Conrad and docked in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada after 8 weeks of sailing. My question is, does anyone know anything about (or have a photo of) the S.S. Conrad? By the way, they were married in Balephiul, Tiree. Thanks. Barb Mahoney rmahone1@rochester.rr.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    1. Gordon McConnell - New Zealand - Tiree Gathering - Feedback

    3. Greetings, as per below is some text as a result of some correspondance with Gordon McConnell of New Zealand that may be of interest. If you have answers / comments for Gordon please respond to Gordon. You may even wish to bring your findings to the Gathering. 3 weeks to go! www.tireegathering.com Cheers, Scott -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Original Message ----- From: gmcconnell To: Scott Cameron Sent: Thursday, July 01, 2004 1:46 AM Subject: Re: Isle of Tiree Motto on the Coat of Arms > cumaibh cliu air ard-chlui ar sinnsre A charaid Scott Will be thinking of you Tirisdeachs and wishing that I was with you. Remmeber that the Macleans had a boat of their own in the Flood. Gordon Seannachie Clan Maclean of New Zealand. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Gordon. Flood ? what does this mean? Seannacine - is this you middle name or last name? I thought your last name is McConnel. Thanks, all the best, Scott -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Original Message ----- From: gmcconnell To: Scott Cameron Sent: Friday, July 02, 2004 3:24 AM My mother told me that there is a saying in Clan Maclean that "The Macleans had a boat of their own in the Flood" (Noah's Ark). Seannachie is Genealogist. Sir Donald Maclean of Kilmoluag Tiree settled in Napier, Hawke's Bay NZ in 1840 where he owned Maraekakaho - New Zealand. Many Tirisdeachs came out from Tiree to help on his estate and there would be many descendants there to this day. I have tried over a period of years to research this area, but with little response. Maclean Sinclair mentions him in his book "Clan Gillean." I would also be interested in any info on Tiree Bards. The book Am Bard Tirisdeach by Cameron - of which I have a copy - records most of the Tiree poets. My great uncle Donald Archibald Maclean (late Deputy Chief constabel of Linlithgow is mentioned as a contributor. It would be interesting if these small, but important topics were raised at the Gathering. For example does anyone know about John Maclean, Bard to the Maclean of Coll who emigrated to Antigonish, Nova Scotia in the early 1800's? Does anyone know about Donald Maclean (a cousin of a cousin of mine) who defected to Russia in the early 1950's? He was part of the Philby group. Also, his father Sir Donald Maclean and his brother Sir Ewan Maclean professor of Obstetrics and gynaecology at University College, Cardiff. South Wales and probably a few famous Tirisdeachs. Does anyone know who the Campbells of the Shore were? Which part of the Clan Donald do Tiree Macdonalds belong to Clanranald? Has Sir Lachlan Maclean Chief been advised of the meeting? Any way these will give you time to ponder - and wish I was with you. If you come across Heather Burrow cousin give her my love and best wishes. You've done agreat job. Beannachd leat Gordon McConnell is the Gaelic pronounciation of Macdonald. 3. Good Morning Scott: As Flora ,Mary and I will have albums history I think one of the bigger tables well do us fine. for the Brown /Henderson families. As I have not seen what Flora has I can only guess I am the one with history files so they will only have pictures which we can put into albums. So I am saying one of the larger ones will do us just fine. Thanks Isabelle. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Scott Cameron" <j.scottcameron@rogers.com> To: <SCT-ARL-TIREE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 01, 2004 8:02 AM Subject: [SCT-ARL-TIREE] Display Tables - Tiree Gathering > Archie, Leanne and I met Wednesday evening to go over details as they relate to the Gathering. > > At this time I need to know who will need a table for display purposes at Harcourt United Church.
