1. HECTOR1 MCLEAN was born Abt. 1811 and died Abt. 1854 in Tiree, Argyleshire, Scotland. He married CATHERINE MCLEAN around 1840 or so. She was born Abt. 1816 and died in Osprey, Grey, Ontario. In the 1842 Argylshire Census, it appears that Hector (25) is a crofter living in Kenovay, Tiree with Catherine (20) and John (2 mths). Also living in the same location are Donald (15), Hector (20) a crofter and Margaret (55) a female servant. In 1854, Hector died (family tradition indicates he drowned). They had four sons with the last born after Hector's death. In about 1855, Catharine and the four boys emigrated to Osprey Township, Grey County, Ontario, Canada. When they arrived, they lived with a Donald McLean family. He was likely her brother. Sometime after 1862 Catharine remarried to Duncan Richmond. Children of HECTOR MCLEAN and CATHERINE MCLEAN are: 2. i. JOHN2 MCLEAN, b. March 15, 1841, Kenovay, Tiree, Argyleshire, Scotland; d. Abt. 1908, Barrie Island, Algoma, Ontario. 3. ii. My husband Donald Mitchell had three grandparents from Tiree. Two from Caolis and one from Balevullin. The Caolis Tree begins about the mid 1700s with McLeans, two separate McFadyen families and McDonalds. Throughout I have used "Mc" as sometimes the same family was "Mac" or "Mc" depending on who was compiling the register and I have used "McFadyen" for all the various spellings of that name. One really interesting item of family history relates to John McLean who was born about 1740 and lived to be 107. This is recorded on the side of his grandson's headstone in Kirkapol Graveyard and reads "At their side lies his grandfather who died at the age of 107". Also in the Caolis Tree is Neil McLean born about 1820. Neil is a nephew of John McLean known in Scotland as the Laird of Coll's poet and also known as Bard McLean. See pages 338 to 340 of The Clan Gillean by A. MacLean Sinclair The Balevullin Tree begins with Alexander Gillies (born about 1790) who came to Tiree from Mull with his wife Mary McLucash and family prior to 1841 and John Kennedy. Alexander Gillies's daughter Catherine married John Kennedy's son Donald. Nanette Mitchell
Good morning I am going to be at the Tyree Gathering in Guelph and will have a table on Mull research. However, I wanted to point out that I will also have my Ontario McKinnon files with me as well. After a few years of researching my own McKinnons (many years ago), I started collecting all McKinnons I found in Ontario. I am still collecting and would love to meet any of you with McKinnon lines in Ontario. My purpose is to sort out the origins of those who came to Ontario. Please drop by the table. Catherine MACDONALD (1844-1890) Catherine Macdonald, elder child of John Macdonald and Flora MacPhail, was born in Tiree, on 7th March 1844 and was christened a few weeks later on 31st March. Her father was a blacksmith and crofter of 15 acres at Balinoe. Her mother died some time between 5th January 1846, when Catherine's sister Mary was born, and 29th November 1848 when her father re-married. Mary died in infancy. At the age of nine, Catherine emigrated to Australia with her father, step-mother (Flora Campbell) and two infant half-brothers, Hugh and Hector. They came as assisted immigrants on the ship "Utopia" that arrived at Portland, Victoria, on 25th January 1854. The family settled in the goldfields town of Ararat. On 19th January 1866 in Hamilton, Victoria, a town about 100 km south-west of Ararat, Catherine married Edward Dash, a clerk in the Victorian Treasury Department (and a Baptist lay preacher). Catherine and Edward had 11 children: Hugh Benjamin, b. 1866, Hamilton, Victoria; d. 1875 Mary Catherine, b. 1868, Hamilton, Victoria; d. 1877 Ebenezer, b. 1870, Hamilton, Victoria Charlotte, b. 1872, Hamilton, Victoria Flora, b. 1874, Hamilton, Victoria Catherine Macdonald, b.1876, Kerang, Victoria; d. 1878 May Macdonald, b.1878, Kerang, Victoria Rose Lillian, b. 1881, Ararat, Victoria Hugh Campbell, b. 1883, Ararat, Victoria George Macdonald, b. 1886, Ararat, Victoria Alfred Campbell, b. 1888, Sydney, NSW Catherine was a gentle, serene woman, greatly loved by her children. It was said she had the power of "healing hands". To encourage her children to be equally proud of their Macdonald and Campbell ancestry, and to resist being caught up in old clan enmities, she gave the middle name Macdonald to some of her children and Campbell to others. Today, four generations later, they still appear as middle names among some of her descendants. Edward Dash retired from the Victorian Treasury Department at the end of 1880. He was appointed Baptist pastor at Ararat and ministered there for five years. In 1886 the family moved to Sydney. Early in 1888, Catherine's father, John Macdonald, came from Victoria to live with her and her family in Sydney. He had been ill for some time and died 6 months later. A few months after her father's death, Catherine was diagnosed as suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis. She died on 24th June 1890, aged 46. She is buried next to her father in the Old Presbyterian Section, Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney. _________________ Keith Dash Sydney, Australia
John MACDONALD (1809-1888) John Macdonald and his twin brother Murdoch, the youngest of eight children of John Macdonald and Marion Campbell, were born in Tiree in 1809. They were christened together on 31st May of that year. I have found no further mention of Murdoch , so he may have died in infancy or childhood John was a blacksmith by trade. At the time of the 1841 census he was unmarried and working as a blacksmith at Balinoe with his brother Donald. On 11th January 1843, when he was aged 33, he married Flora MacPhail, the 24-year-old daughter of Donald MacPhail and Catherine MacLean of Balinoe. John and Flora had two children: Catherine, born 7/3/1844, bap. 31/3/1844 (m. Edward Dash, 1866) Mary, born 5/1/1846, bap. 25/1/1846 Tiree, already overpopulated and with many people surviving at little more than subsistence level, was devastated by the potato famine which began in 1846 and lasted for almost 10 years. Flora MacPhail and her infant daughter Mary died in the early years of the famine. On 29th November 1848, John Macdonald, then aged 39, married Flora Campbell, the 19-year-old daughter of Hector Campbell and Ann MacEachern of Balinoe. There were nine children from this marriage, the earlier ones born in Tiree and the later ones in Australia: Hugh, bap. 5/3/1850, Tiree (m. Mary Grace Cross, 1881) Ann, died in infancy Hector born c.1852, Tiree; died 1867, Ararat, Victoria Sarah, died in infancy John, born c.1857, Victoria George William Campbell, born 1859, Ararat, Victoria Archibald, born 1861, Ararat, Victoria Annabelle, born 1863, Ararat, Victoria Flora, born 1865, Ararat, Victora; died 1871, Ararat, Victoria On 3rd November 1853 the family sailed from Liverpool for Australia as assisted immigrants on the ship "Utopia". They received a cash advance from the Highland and Island Emigration Society, as did many impoverished Scots families, to pay the deposit and other costs involved in applying for their assisted passages to Australia. "Utopia" arrived at Portland, Victoria, on 25th January 1854. As was the usual practice, local townspeople, or businessmen and farmers from Portland or further afield in Western Victoria, came to meet the ship looking for suitable domestic servants or employees to replace those who had left for the gold diggings. Some of the new arrivals signed on for employment immediately, but others, like John Macdonald, chose to seek out chances on their own. He went to the Ararat goldfield to try his luck as a miner. It seems he did not make his fortune because later Australia records suggest he resumed his trade as a blacksmith. John Macdonalds wife, Flora Campbell, died at Ararat on 18th July 1865 following the birth of a daughter, named Flora after her mother. John continued living in Victoria for the next 23 years, but little is known of this period in his life. In about March 1888, then aged 78 and in ill health, John Macdonald moved to Sydney to live with his daughter Catherine, her husband Edward Dash and their family. He died at his daughters home in Sydney on 16th August 1888. _________________ Keith Dash Sydney, Australia
John MACDONALD (1766-c.1841) John Macdonald, baptised on 30th November 1766, was the only child of Donald Macdonald and Mary Macdonald recorded in the baptismal register of the Parish of Tiree. That he was an only child, or at least the only son, is consistent with the writings of his grand-daughter, Flora MacDougall, in her autobiography ("Footprints of One Bonnie Scotch Lassie", published in Autumn Leaves Vol.88 (1925), a journal of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, USA): "He was only a blacksmith, the son of a blacksmith, and being an only son he was sent to Glasgow where he received education and learned all kinds of work in the iron trade. When he came back from the city he was such a dandy, so grandmother told me, and looked so nice beside the country lads that she fell in love with him at first sight. They were married, and in time grandfather became a well-to-do farmer and the magistrate of the island." On 24th January 1797, John Macdonald, then aged 30 and working as a blacksmith in the township of Balinoe, Tiree, married Marion Campbell, the 21-23 year old daughter of Murdoch Campbell and Catherine MacLean of Balinoe. John and Marion had eight children: Donald, 1797 (married Annabella Black 1841) Hugh, 1799 Murdoch, 1801 Catherine, 1803 (married Duncan MacDougall 1824) Flora, 1805 Mary, 1807 John & Murdoch (twins), 1809 John Macdonald was not listed in the first national census of 1841, so he must have died before the census date. His wife Marion was listed as living with their son Donald and his family at Balinoe. Flora MacDougall wrote that her grandfather died at about the time that her Uncle Donald married, which was in January 1841. Marion Campbell died on 30th January 1868 aged 93 in the township of Balephuil, Tiree, where her daughter Catherine and husband Duncan MacDougall lived. _________________ Keith Dash Sydney, Australia

Dear Louise, I have a feeling that you will be inundated but here is what I know of my Tiree connection. My great grandfather,James Galbraith, was the Old Parochial schoolmaster on the island and he and his wife, Janet Wotherspoon, both came from Gigha originally. They lived on the croft at Ballevulin and had three daughters - Sarah who was my grandmother ( married Boyack Donald and left to live in Glasgow), Mary Campbell Galbraith(married John MacDonald) and Janet Wotherspoon Galbraith(married Donald MacDonald). I dont know if Mary or Janet had any descendants. Have a great time at the Gathering Best wishes from Erica McKellar ----- Original Message ----- From: "Louise MacDougall" <macdougallclan@shaw.ca> To: <SCT-ARL-TIREE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 15, 2004 3:03 PM Subject: [SCT-ARL-TIREE] ROLL CALL on Tiree Mailing List, 2004 > Dear Tiree Listers, > > Over the next few days, we will be launching a Roll Call on this List to > coincide with the Tiree Gathering 2004. "RED" HECTOR MCLEAN of LITTLE SOURIS, MANITOBA ---------------------------------------------- SE 1/4 24 -9-19 (Ward 3) SW 1/4 24-9-19 (Ward 3) Hector's parents, Alexander (Alex) MacLean; fisherman at Balephuill and Catherine Lamond were married on June 8, 1851 at the Barony, in Glasgow, Scotland. Hector was born on January 15, 1856 to Alex and Catherine. Catherine died of peritonitis at 6 am on January 21st, 1856 and was buried in the Soroby Cemetery in Tyree. Alex registered the birth of his son Hector and the death of his wife Catherine on the same day, January 30, 1856. Hector had an older sibling, Murdoch who was born on April 16th, 1854. However, since Murdoch doesn't appear on the 1861 census, it is assumed that he passed away sometime during this period. Hector was the grandson of Donald and Ann McLean of Balephuill and he resided with his grandparents and their children. Hector was of slim build and wiry. He was on the fishing boats by the age of 15 and became a ship's carpenter. He sailed the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas. It appears he enjoyed sailing because later he shipped aboard the China Tea Clippers which raced 'round Cape Horn with tea cargoes and on one occasion his ship was first to come in. Perhaps because of his seafaring days, it was well known that Hector enjoyed a 'wee dram or two' and had 'an eye' for a pretty lady. In 1878 Hector came to Canada with his two uncles, in a party of 'three McLean families'. The uncles and Hector wintered in Kincardine Bruce County Ontario and in the early spring of 1879 came to Manitoba. Hector's trade was that of a shipwright and because of this naval background he was well acquainted with the use of a sextant. This became very useful in order to survey their properties. He shot the lines from the north hill, now Highways 1 and 10. In the winter of '79, Hector obtained work as a labourer in Winnipeg, and became a construction foreman for the original Louise Street Bridge until its completion. He had several other skills as well. He was a shoemaker, harness-maker and a steam 'engineer'. In those early years Hector also served as a Trustee for the Little Souris School #227. He got his homestead underway by the 5th of July, 1879. While in Winnipeg, he met Anne (Annie) Black of Clochlea, Isle of Lismore, Argyleshire and they married on May 5, 1882 in the original Baptist Church located on Main Street and Rupert Avenue. The Reverend A. McDonald officiated. Anne was the youngest of four children born on August 14, 1858 to Neil Black and Sarah McIntyre of Clochlea. Anne also had a half sister named Anne born to her father Neil and a Janet Black on September 2, 1846. Annie and Hector had ten children, John Black (Jack); CatyAnn (Kate) married Fred Gilbert; Maryflora (Mary) married Dougald McKinnon; Charles; Neil; Alexander; Duncan married Alma Olafson; Sarah Marion married James Hardcastle Robertson; Daniel (Dan) and Margrete. Annie passed away in 1934 and Hector passed away on July 8, 1943 , both are buried together in the Brandon Cemetery. (Submitted by Jeanette Robertson of Winnipeg, Manitoba, dusable@escape.ca)
Dear Listers, Lets begin the Roll Call of family stories in this order, giving the larger clans a headstart since most researchers have at least one of these first 5 surnames in their ancestry: July 15 - MacLean starts. July 16 -- MacDonald, MacKinnon start. July 17 -- Cameron, all variations of MacFadden & MacPhaiden start. July 18 - all other clans/surnames start. The instructions are as follows: 1. Email "To": send your email to SCT-ARL-TIREE-L@rootsweb.com 2. Email "From": Remember that the email address which you send from will be displayed on the Internet for many years! (If you want to get a new address for this purpose, Yahoo is offering free ones right now with 100mb of storage space.) 3. Email "Subject": In your subject mention the surname and the location of the family you are featuring. E.g. the McLean sample which will follow has the Subject as "Red Hector McLean of Little Souris, Manitoba, Canada" 4. Email length: Up to one page--which means that if you printed it out, it would fit on one sheet of regular Canadian paper (8.5 by 11 inches). That size allows for the possibility that people can easily print out these histories, one per page, and keep them in a binder. 5. Format required: "Plain Text" only, no attachments. (or Rootsweb will reject your email) You can include links, but if you want them to be active, you must start them as http://www.... 6. Where to View: the Roll Call will become part of the Archives of the Rootsweb Tiree Mailing List: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/SCT-ARL-TIREE/ 7. Contact Info for Researcher: Please add your name and general location. Repeating your email address at the end is also a good idea. You can submit as many histories as you like. Remember that each side of a family has a history of its own, e.g. for my great-grandparents, Malcolm MacDougall and Isabella MacLean, I could submit a family history from the MacDougall side of the family and another from the McLean side, with different titles of course. Also, you may want to submit a history for a family which was not of Tiree or Coll origin but married into those families and then added a distinctive surname to their Tiree descendants. E.g. in my family, the Carletons are of Irish origin, but married a number of Tiree descendants around Tiverton, Ontario. Therefore, Tiree descendants bearing the Carleton surname from that location are almost certainly related via this Irish family. If you don't have time to do justice to a family story, then just submit a few lines so that your family at least appears in the Roll Call, if only briefly. You can submit a longer story later. Thanks to Jeanette Robertson of Winnipeg who has submitted her material to start us off (see McLean message following). Although this Roll Call is starting before the Gathering 2004, it will also continue afterwards in order to accommodate all the new discoveries that will be made there. Lets hear from everyone on the Tiree List over the next few weeks! Louise MacDougall Vancouver Island, BC Canada
Dear Tiree Listers, Over the next few days, we will be launching a Roll Call on this List to coincide with the Tiree Gathering 2004. It will launch now and continue over the next few weeks. The main purpose of the Roll Call is to make sure that everyones Tiree ancestry is listed by surname in the Archives of this Tiree Mailing List. Your response to the Roll Call can be in the form of a long family history (maximum one page of typewriting) or a brief paragraph, or even a simple outline of genealogy. Even if your familys information is already in the Archives, please post it again in response to this Roll Call. The idea is to get a bird's eye view of the ancestral connections of all the Tiree descendants who are currently involved in genealogy research. When the Roll Call is done, we hope to organize these individual pieces of family stories on a website according to surnames. Everyone with Tiree or Coll ancestry is welcome to participate. You dont have to belong to this List or be attending the Gathering in order to be part of the Roll Call. You only need to have a connection to Tiree or Coll in your ancestry. So, please pass this message on to anyone who might be interested but is not on this Mailing List. The next message will give the instructions for the Roll Call. Have fun with this!
