    3. Based on the recent suggestion* given on this list for finding male Tyree relatives in Mull at the time of the 1841 census (June 7-8), and thanks to a generous census lookup on the Mull list, I may have found my Alexander McDonald from Heanish. If it is him then he would likely be with others from Heanish. Particularly the areas of Mull called Ardtun and Knocknafenaig which were full of Tiree peat cutters on the day the Census was taken. Look in the families that are quite large and have many unrelated folk with various surnames living with them that day. 3. Hi Everyone! Ok, I've managed to re-establish the genealogy link on Isle of Tiree Online News. At the same time I noticed that although I have processed all the Yahoo photo albums in 'Picture Store' to be shared with the public hardly any of them are accessible to the general public. I have no idea what is going on but for sure I have to do some serious repair work on the site. Best wishes to everyone in Guelph. Although the contingent travelling to the Gathering from Tiree itself is small we are all interested in hearing out it goes. Anyone who would like to share their photographs or experiences of the day should filter these either through Scott Cameron or email me direct. Wish I was there! GORDON D. W. 3. This is a continuation of my, so far unsucessful, quest to trace ancestors or at least find independant facts of their existance. Donald Archibald MacLean,(my Grandfather), born Tiree 1881 had seven brothers and/or sisters. Alisdair married and had seven children Marion not married John Kennedy I think this is a son of John Kennedy MacLean, who was given the same name as his father! Effie married and had three children Hugh married and had five children Marion (another?) unknown Mary Isabella unknown Meanwhile, John Kennedy MacLean married Helen Butter, Helen had nine brothers and/or sisters. John no family Mary Agnes Steuart unmarried Madeline Jane unknown Alexander no family Jessie Fulton unknown Francis Milne unknown Anna Evelyn unknown Edwin Athol unknown (The Executor) Herbert William Waller unknown I am fairly confident that most of the above should prove correct as a letter relating to the distribution of an estate came from a solicitors firm of Glen Mackinnon & Mowat, William St, Greenock mid 1973, detailing the above. All of the above persons will now be deceased. All of the above shared the estate, so I can only guess that there must have been family relationships between both groups, or at least within each group. I have no dates or spouse details of any of the above, except my Grandfather of course. It would be great if anything rang any bells/ lit any lights. Iain Watson iain@freenet.co.nz

    3. Dear Tiree Listers and Gathering Listers, You'll probably have noticed from recent messages that one of the Gathering events marshals at the McCrae House museum in Guelph. I'm wondering if any of you are related or rumoured to be related to him? Or will any of you be visiting the museum and can ask if there are any genealogies of John's families available? I have two Tiree "cousins", one via the MacDougalls and one via the McLeans, who appear to be related to John McCrae. Their particular connection would be through the Young line of ancestry. The Youngs have a Simpson ancestor who is said to be the sister of the Simpson ancestor of John's mother. John's mother, Janet Simpson Eckford, was raised near Walkerton, Ontario. http://www.museum.guelph.on.ca/mccraejanet.htm John's story can be found here: http://www.museum.guelph.on.ca/mccraenew.htm The museum website is here: http://www.museum.guelph.on.ca/mccraejohn.htm Any connections, info or sources to contact would be much appreciated. 1. Tiree Family Tree reaches its July, 2004 goal!
    2. Louise MacDougall
    3. Dear Tiree Descendants, I am overjoyed to report that the grassroots, digital Tiree Family Tree hit 9,800 names today! I think you'll all agree that this number is close enough to our unpublished goal of 10,000 to be called "right on target". The Tiree Family Tree has been the focus of Tiree Interconnections, the genealogy project of the Tiree Gathering 2004. The Tree was intended to outlive the Gathering 2004 and become a permanent legacy of the Gathering. Russ McGillivray, who is building the Tree, has been working diligently on it since last year. When he emailed me today, before leaving home for the Guelph Gathering, he said: "I added 3 gedcoms this morning. We now have 39 submissions, totalling 9,800 names and 1,400 Tiree people". ("Tiree people" means those who were born, married or buried on Tiree.) Many thanks to the 37 contributors (besides Russ and me) who sent in Gedcoms. Russ will publish an updated list of all of you after the Gathering. For those of you who will be at the Gathering tomorrow, Saturday, Russ will unveil the Tree at the Genealogy workshop and be available for you to do searches of it during the afternoon. ____________________________________________________________________ Many thanks, also, to the members of the Tiree Interconnections Team who have been acting as consultants/resource people for Russ and myself. The Team members are: 1. Catriona Hunter, Archivist & Duncan Grant, Genealogist at An Iodhlann, the Tiree Archive, Isle of Tiree, Scotland. http://www.tireearchive.com or http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/~iodhlann The Archive offers a Family Research Service at £4.00 sterling per hour. Annual membership is £5.00 sterling. 2. Catriona Smyth, Edinburgh, Scotland. Tiree Research Associate, MacDougalls Genealogy Project. 3. Betty MacKinnon, Tiverton, Ontario, Canada. Tiverton Genealogy Resource Person, South Bruce Genealogy Group. 4. Ian Phillips, Hertfordshire, England. Webmaster, Isle of Mull Genealogy Website. http://www.mullgenealogy.co.uk 5. Simon Sutherland, Nice, France. Author, Islay Interactive Map Program. 6. Gordon Scott, Cornaigmore, Tiree. Editor & Webmaster, Isle of Tiree Online News Website. http://www.isleoftiree.net 7. Keith Dash, Sydney, Australia. Administrator & Editor of Tiree Genealogy Resources http://www.isleoftiree.net ___________________________________________________________________ Russ is happy that the number of descendants in the database now makes the Tree "interesting", to use his phrase. But where it gets even more interesting is if you look at the projections that An Iodhlann, the Tiree Archive, has done for the number of Tiree descendants in the world today. On their website at: http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/~iodhlann/ they say: ****By our calculations there are some 38,000 people of Tiree descent, in every corner of the world, but most particularly in Canada, America, Australia, New Zealand, Patagonia and mainland Scotland. This is the Tiree "diaspora", a giant family whose members are often unaware of one another.**** If the Archive is correct in their calculations, then Russ has already collected a good slice of the Tiree descendants alive today. Way to go, Russ!! The Tiree Interconnections project has clearly achieved everything that we were hoping it would. The Tiree Family Tree has passed with flying colours through the "feasibility study" stage of its existence. And we will let you know where it will go from here. With much appreciation to everyone who has been part of the project up to this point, Louise MacDougall Networking Liaison Tiree Interconnections The genealogy project of the Tiree Gathering 2004 www.tireegatherin.com

    1. Roll Call: NIEL MACDONALD from Caolis, Tiree to Moore Township, Ontario ca 1868 - CORRECTION
    2. Ann Hentschel
    3. Hello Everyone: Yesterday I posted NIEL MACDONALD's information and noticed that I had two different dates of birth for him, 1831 and 1840. 1831 is the right date as this information came directly from the Archives in Tiree. His marriage certificate January 1877 states he was 36 years old and his wife was 29 years old. His death certificate states he was age 78 when he died in 1918. So this would make his birth date 1840. Another mystery to solve. Ann Hentschel, Sarnia, Ontario. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). 2. Ann Hentschel
    3. Hello Everyone: Just posted my NIEL MACDONALD "Roll Call" and realized this is the perfect opportunity to ask everyone to look on their Trees for my missing HUGH MACDONALD. Hugh was born in Caolis, Tiree on 12 May 1829, the son of DONALD MACDONALD and MARION MACDOUGALL. He came to Ontario with Niel, ca 1868, but decided to settle in the Bruce. I have found several HUGH MACDONALDs in the Bruce but none was the right one. People have suggested that he might have gone to Manitoba. It would be wonderful if he could be found, especially during this Tiree Celebration. Thank you. Ann Hentschel, Sarnia, Ontario. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 1. Roll Call: NIEL MACDONALD from Caolis, Tiree to Moore Township, Ontario ca 1868
    2. Ann Hentschel
    3. NIEL MACDONALD 1840-1918 Niel and his brother Hugh came to Ontario ca 1868. It is not known whether they came to Ontario via New York or Eastern Canada. Niel purchased his first 50 acres of land in Moore Township in February 1869 and an additional 50 acres in 1873. He then had to clear the land of trees and build a house. On January 2, 1877 he married Catharine BEATON from Prince Edward Island. Niel was 36 and Catharine was 29. Their first child Marcella was born on July 25, 1878. A son Donald John Alexander was born on August 25, 1880, a son Peter on April 23, 1882, and a son Charles on September 2, 1886. Life in the early years on the farm was a struggle. Settlers such as Niel and "Kitty" had to suffer the hardships of bad winters and isolation. Peter died on May 17, 1884 of Malarial Fever and on August 31, 1890 tragedy struck again when Charles age 4 died from a scolding when he fell into a tub of hot water. Kitty only lived to October 1894 when it is said that she died from a broke! n heart over the loss of her children. Hugh MacDonald was rumoured to have settled in the Bruce. Parents of Niel and Hugh were Donald MacDONALD [1785 - bef. 1851] from Caolis, Tiree and Marion MacDOUGALL [born 1791] from Vaul, Tiree. Children: Flora MacDonald born 28 Nov. 1820. Euphemia MacDonald born 24 March 1822. John MacDonald born 11 Oct. 1824. Hector MacDonald born 19 Dec. 1826. Hugh MacDonald born 12 May 1829. Hector was born on January 15, 1856 to Alex and Catherine. Catherine died of peritonitis at 6 am on January 21st, 1856 and was buried in the Soroby Cemetery in Tyree. Alex registered the birth of his son Hector and the death of his wife Catherine on the same day, January 30, 1856. Hector had an older sibling, Murdoch who was born on April 16th, 1854. However, since Murdoch doesn't appear on the 1861 census, it is assumed that he passed away sometime during this period. Hector was the grandson of Donald and Ann McLean of Balephuill and he resided with his grandparents and their children. Hector was of slim build and wiry. He was on the fishing boats by the age of 15 and became a ship's carpenter. He sailed the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas. It appears he enjoyed sailing because later he shipped aboard the China Tea Clippers which raced 'round Cape Horn with tea cargoes and on one occasion his ship was first to come in. Perhaps because of his seafaring days, it was well known that Hector enjoyed a 'wee dram or two' and had 'an eye' for a pretty lady. In 1878 Hector came to Canada with his two uncles, in a party of 'three McLean families'. The uncles and Hector wintered in Kincardine Bruce County Ontario and in the early spring of 1879 came to Manitoba. Hector's trade was that of a shipwright and because of this naval background he was well acquainted with the use of a sextant. This became very useful in order to survey their properties. He shot the lines from the north hill, now Highways 1 and 10. In the winter of '79, Hector obtained work as a labourer in Winnipeg, and became a construction foreman for the original Louise Street Bridge until its completion. He had several other skills as well. He was a shoemaker, harness-maker and a steam 'engineer'. In those early years Hector also served as a Trustee for the Little Souris School #227. He got his homestead underway by the 5th of July, 1879. While in Winnipeg, he met Anne (Annie) Black of Clochlea, Isle of Lismore, Argyleshire and they married on May 5, 1882 in the original Baptist Church located on Main Street and Rupert Avenue. The Reverend A. McDonald officiated. Anne was the youngest of four children born on August 14, 1858 to Neil Black and Sarah McIntyre of Clochlea. Anne also had a half sister named Anne born to her father Neil and a Janet Black on September 2, 1846. Annie and Hector had ten children, John Black (Jack); CatyAnn (Kate) married Fred Gilbert; Maryflora (Mary) married Dougald McKinnon; Charles; Neil; Alexander; Duncan married Alma Olafson; Sarah Marion married James Hardcastle Robertson; Daniel (Dan) and Margrete. Annie passed away in 1934 and Hector passed away on July 8, 1943 , both are buried together in the Brandon Cemetery. 1. The Tiree Emigrant's Kist: your contributions are welcome by email!
    2. Louise MacDougall
    3. Dear Tiree Listers, One of the speakers at the Gathering Genealogy Workshop this Saturday morning (July 24, 2004) in Guelph will be Catriona Smyth from Edinburgh, Scotland. She will be organizing a display called the Tiree Emigrant's Kist (see below) and invites all of you to contribute photos to the display by email if you are not attending the Gathering. Explanations of any items or stories to go with them would be especially welcome. Or, if you don't have a photo of an item, just send the story you know about an item that was carried on an emigration journey. What a great idea, Catriona! Louise MacDougall Tiree Interconnections Project, Tiree Gathering 2004. EMAIL contributions to Leanne Piper: register@tireegathering.com Below is the explanation of the Kist project that Catriona sent out to the people who are attending the Gathering: ************************************************************ TIREE EMIGRANTS KIST ************************************************************ To see a picture of a Kist that is part is a travelling exhibition that belongs to the Museum of Scotland, go here: http://www.btinternet.com/~paulbasu/panel01.html The 19th century was a time of change. In their shiploads, Scots were packing up, leaving behind their lives as they knew it to pursue a better life in the New World. Emigrants came from every background: Highland crofters longing for better farming conditions, people from the towns with a dream of owning their own land, failed businessmen running from debtors. All had a dream of a better life for them and their family. Their lives were packed into a kist, a wooden chest measuring approximately one metre by half a metre. In the Kist above are examples of the possessions which early 19th century emigrants may have taken abroad, including tools, cooking and sewing implements, as well as more personal items such Sunday school certificates, photographs and a bible. At The Gathering there will be a Tiree Emigrants Kist. So I am looking for personal possessions to be put in it. I am happy to use modern versions of things if their overall design has not changed over the last hundred years or so e.g knitting needles . Wooden boxes like this were used for travelling right up to the 20th century and people emigrated to Canada throughout the 19th century so anything from the 19th century will be welcome. If you had something that is too big or too precious, bring or email a picture of it. Could you also include a small explanation, such as who it belonged to or any stories attached to it, it would make it more interesting. Below is a list of the contents of the Kist that belongs to the Museum of Scotland. This is only to give you some ideas of what we are looking for but each family will have its own ideas. 1. Re: [SCT-ARL-TIREE] Roll Call 2004 Camerons/MacFarlanes/MacLeans
    2. First a question. In several Roll Call Reports I have noticed reference to ancestors who departed Tyree on "The Charlotte." The date stated in at least two instances is June 30, 1849. I have a copy of the first page of a document called "List of Passengers per Charlotte for Montreal June 20, 1849." This is not a huge discrepancy in date, but I assume these references are to the same sailing. I will have my copy of this document with me in Guelph should anyone care to peruse it. DONALD MCLEAN AND WIFE MARY MCCAULRIG had a daughter Marion McLean born January 7, 1668 at Ballwilline, Tyree Marion McLean married Neil McFarlane (born about 1762 at Grinall) on August 5, 1786 at Grinall, Tyree Their children: John 11/2/1787 Grinall, Tyree Ann 4/12/1789 " Catharine 4/24/1791 " Catharine 7/21/1793 Killkennethberg, Tyree Flora * 9/6/1795 " John 9/10/1797 " Ann 12/8/1799 " *Flora McFarlane married Hugh Cameron (born 4/12/1789, father Duncan) 9/1/1819 at Balevullin, Tyree Their children: John 6/7/1820 Duncan 1/25/1822 Neil * 4/5/1824 Catharine 8/3/1826 Marion 10/13/1828 Christina 2/17/1831 Donald 6/5/1833 John 12/9/1835 Flora Cameron (The Widow Cameron who was given 10 p by the Duke of Argyll upon arriving in Montreal according to the dole list) with her children John (the 1st), Neil, Catharine, Marion and John (the 2nd) left Tyree aboard the Charlotte bound for Montreal on June 20, 1849. It is assumed that her husband Hugh died prior to their sailing but no record of his death has yet been found. Also no record of her children Duncan or Donald. Title on the "dole" list says" List of Poor Emigrants per ship "Charlotte" for Montreal who are to Receive the amount opposite their respective names." Column headings - Residence in Tyree Cy. - Name of head of family - N. Received of I rom - Payment At the bottom of the page 16 August 1849. * Neil Cameron Married Margaret Thornhill April 15, 1857 at Culross, Ontario Margaret was born July 18, 1836 in Ireland Their children: Born Died John 3/19/1858 2/29/1944 Duluth Minnesota Robert 5/6/1859 5/13/1926 Duluth Minnesota Margaret Jane 2/21/1861 unknown Hugh 6/22/1864 2/9/1929 Duluth Minnesota Flora 2/9/1873 12/22/1950 Duluth Minnesota Neil Cameron died in Proctor Minnesota on 1/16/1909 and is buried in Oneota Cemetery, Duluth Minnesota Margaret Thornhill Cameron died in Duluth Minnesota 11/12/1904 and is buried in Oneota Cemetery, Duluth Minnesota.
