    3. Peggy Cameron - Isle of Tiree Gathering - "An Tirisdeach" (The Tiree Newsletter) article. Thank you Peggy Cameron of Isle of Tiree, Scotland for the email! Much appreciated to you and the other Tiree attendees - Lachlan Brown, Mary Davies, Mary MacLean and Adam Smith. Thank you to everyone else too that made the Isle of Tiree Descendants Gathering the success that it truly was. Cheers, Scott www.isleoftiree.net Gordon Scott's wonderful webite. www.tireegathering.com Friday, Saturday, Sunday, July 23, 24, 25, 2004 - Guelph, Ontario, Canada. www.visitscottishheartlands.com < neat website which you can subscribe to at no charge to receive a newsletter. To those celebrating Thanksgiving this weekend have a great one. We certainly have much to be thankful for! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is the article from the most recent issue of "An Tirisdeach" (The Tiree Newsletter). It was written by myself, with contributions from the other Tiree attendees. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TIREE GATHERING AT GUELPH, ONTARIO, CANADA. 23 - 25 JULY, 2004. "Ceud Mile Failte - Welcome to the Tiree Gathering 2004". This was the motto of the Schedule of Events which each participant received from the volunteer Tiree Gathering Committee ; a list of "Who's Coming", a registration form, a map of the Gathering venues, an accommodation list and information to help anyone attending this exciting weekend in Guelph were sent out from April 2004 onwards. The city of Guelph (founded in 1827 and named after one of the family names of the British royal family), is 60 miles from Toronto; about one hour's drive on the 401 Highway or via rail. Five visitors from Tiree descended on the seemingly quiet university town of Guelph in late July ; Peggy Cameron, Mary MacLean, Lachie Brown, Mary Davies and Adam Smith. After registration, the first event on Friday was a visit to the University and an exploration of their Scottish Collection which is one of the finest in the world. We were given an intensive survey of all materials, maps, books etc. on the five floors of the university. Besides books on Scottish history, literature, newspapers and periodicals, religion and science, there is an Atlas and Map collection in the basement e.g. l895 Royal Scottish Geographical Society Atlas of Scotland is to be found here. The library also has a unique copy of a literary magazine, "The Spy", edited by James Hogg (the Ettrick Shepherd). Later that day at the Boathouse beside the picturesque Speed and Eramosa river, Calum MacKinnon (from Braeside, Heanish, Tiree,) and well-known fiddler, now living in Seattle, entertained us alon! g with Scott Cameron and his young musicians. On Saturday morning, a series of workshops kept us busy. A. Presentation and launch of "Tiree Interconnections". This is a comprehensive database project linking the families of Tiree. B. History of Tiree and Tiree settlements. C. "Songs, stories and survival" which was an overview of the rich folk culture of the Isle of Tiree and Canadian settlements. In the afternoon, we gathered at the Royal City Park. It was now Ceud Mile Failte to the Guelph Pipe Band who played a concert selection and also provided accompaniment for the Marlene Matthews Highland Dancers. The Guelph Pipe Band was formed in l922, making it one of the oldest Pipe Bands in continuous operation in Canada with a long history of excellence in competitions. The band wear the Red MacCrae tartan, in honour of Colonel John McCrae, a Guelph resident famous for his poem "In Flanders Field". I think what many people appreciate about a highland gathering or games, is the connection to an older way of life. Lachie Brown of Balevullin commented that he was disappointed that we were not accompanied by some of the many talented musicians from Tiree, for they would surely have had received a wonderful welcome. On Sunday, 25th July, we boarded a bus along the Elora Road to the Bruce County, where its shoreline is dotted with the Great Lakes Lighthouses; emphasizing the importance of transportation on the Lakes. We saw the large barns that mostly belonged to MacKinnons and also one built by Archie MacKinnon's family from Salem. The waters of Lake Huron can be treacherous, but we delighted in a warm paddle at Southampton. On our journey we saw a horse and buggy of the Mennonite community; they are members of "peace churches" and hold a doctrine of non-violence, and also reject the use of modern technology such as mechanized transport and electricity. I met a farmer called Marge from Saskatchewan, who had 300 cattle, and presented her card with a picture of a young calf with fleece ear muffs made by herself. Did I laugh ! It seems that if they didn't put these on the calves, the winter frost would be so intense that it would cause holes in the calves ears. Tiree crofters don't know how lucky they are in our climate! Gathering attendee Mary MacLean of Scarinish reflects on how the weekend began, " .. a time of sharing information, of puzzling over family trees, of meeting new and old friends, parades, museums, University of Guelph, ceilidhs, dinners, an outstanding bus tour, musical entertainment, sharing a few drams, picnics in the warm sun, roaming around cemeteries searching headstones for the mention of Tyree, early mornings and very late nights all packed full of activities and laughter. I got little sleep as I surely did not intend to miss a thing ! " Mary Davies was also thrilled to meet with many folks from the USA and all parts of Canada and old friends from as far away as Australia. Her grandson Adam Smith had a ball. Scott Cameron, Archie Mackinnon, Leanne Piper and the many volunteers that gave freely of their time and skill, are to be congratulated on ensuring that we all left Guelph with a great feeling of contentment and comradeship. This Tiree Gathering was a wonderful success; and we hope that we can all build on this initiative, and all work together to make the Gathering here on Tiree in 2006 a fantastic experience. 1. Trying to get through?
    2. Keith Dash
    3. About once a week for the past 4 weeks, somebody has been sending me an e-mail message that I can't download from my ISP's server before I am timed out. Increasing the download time doesn't work. The only way I have found to resolve the problem is to delete all the messages in my In Box on my ISP's server, which means I lose all the messages queued after the mysterious blocking message. Most of these deleted messages would be spam offering great wealth or unbelieveable physical enhancements, but some may be genuine personal messages or messages from SCT-ARL-TIREE subscribers relating to the Tiree Surnames List or Overseas Cemetery Records. Please let me know if you have tried to contact me in the past month so I can check if I have received and processed your request. _________________ Keith Dash Sydney, Australia

    1. The Bruce Bulletin article about the Tiree Gathering is now on the BCGS website......
    2. Scott Cameron
    3. Hi Scott, The Bruce Bulletin article about the Tiree Gathering is now on the BCGS website, on the events page, http://www.rootsweb.com/~onbcgs/bcgsproj.htm. Regards, Louise Stewart, Webmaster, Bruce County Genealogical Society -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tiree Gathering The BCGS was proud to be a part of the Tiree Gathering www.tireegathering.com held in Guelph on July 23rd, 24th and 25th, 2004. "Captain" Scott Cameron, assisted by Leanne Piper and Archie McKinnon pulled off the event with great prestige. Attendees of the occasion came from as far as Australia, Tiree, several U.S. states, and all across Canada, not to mention many from Bruce County. The idea of the gathering was to unite descendents of immigrants from Tiree, have them meet together and to share their knowledge of the past. BCGS's display and sales table, managed by Shirley Irwin and Audrey Underwood, was a busy place throughout Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, over a busload of attendees from the gathering toured the townships of Bruce and Kincardine where Tiree people originally settled. A tour of the Bruce County Museum and Archives, guided by David Sharron, Anne Marie Collin and Shirley Irwin, was a pleasure for participants, and gave them a look into the history of our area. From the BCGS Bruce Bulletin, Volume 15, Issue 3, August, 2004 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    1. August 2004 - Great article in the Bruce Bulletin.........
    2. Scott Cameron
    3. http://www.rootsweb.com/~onbcgs/ August 2004 - Great article in the Bruce Bulletin that I received in the mail today from the Bruce County Genealogical Society. I tried to copy / paste it for all to read, but it is not on the website at this time. So, looks like you will have to log on and sign up for a membership > "Individual Membership $15 annually. Includes our quarterly newsletter, the Bruce Bulletin." Great publication. From what I read BCGS's Shirley Irwin and Audrey Underwood enjoyed themselves as much as we enjoyed having them at the Gathering! Thanks again "Friend of the Bruce" for a memorable job well done! Recently I was on vacation in the Bruce in Southampton. Had I remembered I would have of stopped in for the every other Monday night meeting at the Bruce County Museum http://www.brucecounty.on.ca/museum/ . While in Southampton I tried to get together with our entertaining tour guide Don Ribey, but Don was back at it ... entertaining! Next time. This past weekend I was at the 59th Fergus Scottish Festival, http://www.fergusscottishfestival.com/ for those who have been there, wonderful, for those who have not and ever get the chance to do so ... do it ... great entertainment. While there, just on the Sunday I got to enjoy time with my new found clan ... Clan Keith re: Marshall sept. I did not run the 10 km race this year due to baseball coaching my son David's team. We finished the year in second place, not bad considering we were not favoured to finish near the top. However, we enjoyed the underdog thrill of first place finish last year. Tomorrow night I head off with my chanter for my first venture into the world of learning to play the bagpipes! Aye, Leanne and Archie it will be sweet sounds to your ears when you hear the pipes from the Cameron croft ... no need to close your windows! In closing, I will be looking to rent a cottage for a week next summer in the Bruce or within a drive of Guelph, so if you know of anyone who rents a cottage let me know please. You see the cottage we rented this year after several years recently changed to new owners and was a bit of a "cottage from hell" week. Maybe it had something to do with the rental falling on Friday the 13th! So there I was for a good part of the days playing Mr. Handyman re: water, lights, toilet, hot water tank, etc.. Grrr! Thank goodness I had brought my tool box. Two weeks we are back to the Bruce to camp at MacGregor Point Provincial Park http://www.ontarioparks.com/english/macg.html. Aye, but while in the Bruce this past week my son David, daughter Laura and I rented kayaks and kayaked the Saugeen River from County Road 17 for about 15 km through beautiful countryside and rapids. I highly recommend this activity re:www.thorncrestoutfitters.com/southampton.htm . Lots of routes / distanc! es to choose from. Great shuttle service. Thorncrest will even shuttle your own canoe / kayak. Cheers, bye for now. Scott

    3. Good Afternoon Gordon: As you already know I am not very good on this computer. I sent in the Brown family tree and I got a copy back for you or someone But I do not know if it was included or if I was suppose to do something with it so just so I know I would really hate to miss putting our tree in with the rest of the families. So could you enlighten me as to where I am at with this and will try and get some help here as to get it into shape for you or whatever is needed. Thank you in advance for your assistance Sincerely, Isabelle Carter ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gordon SCOTT" <gordon@gdwscott.fsnet.co.uk> To: <SCT-ARL-TIREE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 23, 2004 2:29 PM Subject: [SCT-ARL-TIREE] Genealogy > Hi Everyone! > > Ok, I've managed to re-establish the genealogy link on Isle of Tiree Online News. 1. Times of London References to Tiree
    2. Ann Hentschel
    3. Hello Everyone: The "Times of London" was available again for a couple of days so I printed off a few more references to the Isle of Tiree. Ann Hentschel, Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. Saturday, Oct. 9, 1920 - Marriages: MacDiarmid : MacMeikan - On the 1st Oct. at St. Andrew's Church, Edinburgh, by the Rev. John Sanderson. B.A., Hugh MacDiarmid, elder son of Hugh MacDiarmid, Island House, Isle of Tiree, Argyll, to Vivien Helen daughter of John A. MacMeiken, barrister- at- law, Queen Anne House, Deal. Saturday, July28, 1928 - Services to Scottish Islands: From Oban to Tiree return, pre-War, was 6s steerage and 8s cabin. Now the fares are 15s and 30s. A business trip from Lochmaddy to Castlebay now takes nearly a week instead of a day, and costs about £5 more than pre-War. Over the whole system the charges show like and in many cases greater increases. I trust, if the written evidence submitted is available and is read by you, you will change your view. Given decent accommodation and reasonable fares, the traffic will in two or three years' time reach the highly remunerative state that existed a generation ago, when Hutchison and the first MacBrayne realized that it would be fatal to impoverish their clients by high fares and freights. Even today the fertile Isle of Tiree exports £15 per head of its population of nearly 2000 people - a record of industry to be proud of. For they have large families. Surely these people cannot be allowed to perish by the continuance of an unrestricted monopoly. If you can support the present system, which will quickly destroy the people, then all I can say is that the methods of the Duke of Cumberland after Culloden were more humane. For he at least put them out of pain. F.A. MacQuisten, Member for Argyll. House of Commons, July 27. Tuesday, Mar. 3, 1931. - Obituary - Lady Frances Balfour: An Appreciation from a Friend: Her flag always flew mast-high. "Prove yourself unconquerable", she wrote to a friend; and again, from the Isle of Tiree, "In a great flood of sunrise light this morning the text came to mind, 'See that ye love one another with pure hearts ferverently.' Gathering up the heartsease memories of life and love, one knows that there is a future life that neither heart nor eye can understand." Wednesday, Mar. 1, 1950. - Baby Born in Aircraft: A baby boy was born yesterday in a B.E.A. air liner flying between the Isle of Tiree and Glasgow. The mother was Mrs McFarlane, of Balephuill, Tiree. At the time of the birth the aircraft was 800ft. over Scarba Island, Inner Hebrides. It landed at Renfrew airport half an hour later. Wednesday, Aug. 31, 1955 - South Uist Range - Letters to the Editor: Letters expressing concern regarding the proposal to construct a guided missle range in South Uist. The present condition of the Isle of Tiree, 10 years after the War which left it a mass of derelict huts, broken concrete, and corrugated iron, is a warning of the fate of South Uist if this disastrous proposal goes through. E.M. Bullock - St. Rule, Windemere, Westmorland. Sarurday, June 1, 1963. - Iona the Saintly Isle, by Seton Gordon: Lover of Birds: West, the Celtic saint, Columba, would have seen the lovely fertile Isle of Tiree where, in recent years the growing of hyacinths and daffodils is being successfully carried out. South, he would have seen Jura and Islay, and south-east, in clear weather, the high hills of the Scottish mainland. Monday, Aug. 24, 1964. - Tracing Broch Forts Origins - Skye. Aug. 23: Excavations have been in progress at two sites on the Isle of Skye, which, it is hoped, will throw light on the origins of the Iron Age broch forts of the Scottish mainland and islands and of their builders. The work, directed by Mr. E.W. MacKie, of the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow University, follows the recent extensive excavations at Dun Mor Vaul, on the Isle of Tiree, where the building and occupation of a broch were part of an elaborate archaeological sequence. Saturday, Mar. 23, 1974. - U.K. Holidays - Isle of Tiree, Hebrides. Beautiful log cabin by sea. Totally secluded and comfortable. All modern conveniences. Sleeps 10. Free mid-April to mid-July. From £60 p.w. Tel. Broxton 280. Thursday Nov. 10, 1977. - New Homes & Conversions - Isle of Tiree, Argyll: For Sale - Dwelling House in a ruined condition. Architect conversion plans available. Application made for planning permission for rebuilding. Offers around £2000. For futher particulars apply to Messrs. Brown, Mair, Gemmill & Hislop, 190 Bath Street, Glasgow, G2 4JE. (041-331 1816). Saturday, June 22, 1985. - U.K. Holidays - Isle of Tiree: Converted crofthouse on beautiful isolated bay. July 13-27. Sleeps 8. Tel: 0273 474456. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
