    1. Alexander McDonald and Marion McIntyre both at Hianish
    2. Darryl
    3. I have submitteed this in the past. I have Alexander McDonald and Marion McIntyre both at Hianish Tiree in 1836 and still there in 1841 with 3 sons. Next they are on the ship the Barlow in 1849; they have the 3 sons and 2 daughters. I suspect that Christy was born Mull but have no idea about Mary. I suspect that the family had been living in Moss in 1849. Next they appear in Grey county Ontario in 1851 and Mary is no longer with them. Looking for information to determine the validity of these connections, build on the story, and find ancestors to these people. Thanks Darryl 1. 3. Hello fellow Tiree descendants, Just a little note of interest - my hometown of Milden had a devastating fire on Saturday, destroying the old lumber yard, new doctor's office and fire hall. Luckily, no one was injured. I am sure this was the first time Milden made the National news and just wanted to let you know, that was MY home town. Glenda McPhadden Franklin Regina. Sask.

    1. Bard John McLean of Tiree and Nova Scotia (1787-1848)
    2. Louise MacDougall
    3. Scott has mentioned that he is going to be in Nova Scotia, and I am sending him some info on Bard John McLean of Tiree who settled there in 1819. I'll post a few points here in case anyone else is travelling that way this summer. Bard John McLean (1787-1848), perhaps Tiree's most well known Bard, emigrated from Tiree in 1819 and settled in Barney's River, Pictou County, Nova Scotia. Very early emigration compared to most of our ancestors in Canada! His most famous song "Gloomy Forest" sent back to Scotland, became popular there and actually discouraged folk from emigrating. There is a cairn to him at Glen Bard, 9 miles west of Antigonish town. And his gravestone should still be in Marshy Hope. There's a write up about the Bard on this NS website (first page about half way down), as well as some interesting info about the longest running Gaelic newspaper --which was in NS not Scotland! http://www.ambraighe.ca/gaelicNS.htm The website comes from Cape Breton and is about Gaelic culture. There is even a Gaelic college around there. Some of you might want to subscribe to their journal. I imagine there are still descendants of the Bard's in Nova Scotia. About 1950, there were 2 Gaelic scholars in NS that were his descendants: George Sinclair of Hopewell and Rev. Donald Sinclair of Halifax. Probably some family of theirs are still in the province. My cousin Catirona Smyth, who is fairly closely related to the Bard, tells me most McLeans from the East End of Tiree are related to him in some fashion. If any of you reading this are related to him, please post a message here. Does anyone have photos of the cairn and/or gravestone? If not, maybe Scott will make a pilgrimage to them and take some shots, eh Scott? Louise

    1. MacDOUGALLS of Coales and Vaul, Tyree
    2. Louise MacDougall
    3. Hi all, Some of us have done research trying to connect these 3 ancestral Tyree families: A. MacDOUGALLS OF CAOLES who are the family of Charles McDougall/McLukais m Mary Morrison in Mull 28 March 1785 B. MacDOUGALLS of VAUL who seem to be 2 families, perhaps related: 1. John MacDougall of Vaull married Flory Kennedy 03 April 1787 2. Malcolm McDougall of Vaull married Catherine McPhaiden of Scarinish 07 AUG 1788 Those of us doing the overview research are Catriona Smyth of Scotland, Betty MacKinnon of Ontario, and myself in BC. Other people interested in the Malcolm McDougalls of Vaul are Darrel Kennedy & Mary MacDougall of Ontario. Other people interested in the John MacDougalls of Vaul are Ruth Matheson, Ontario & Glenda Franklin, Saskatchewan. Another connection here is the ancestral Clarks of Caoles who married into both the Charles and John lines of MacDougalls. If anyone else out there has a connection to these 3 MacDougall families, please post a reply to this List indicating which line you are connected to. I will be away till the end of Aug., but will read messages along the road. Don't expect a reply, though, until Sept. Wishing you all a good summer, Louise MacDougall Errington, BC

    2. Louise MacDougall
    3. Hi Ann, I wasn't able to make it to Guelph (family health issues), but I'm glad you met Catriona Smyth who is my MacDougall fourth cousin and serious research partner. We, and another MacDougall researcher in AU, John Brake, had been working on that MacDougall OPR document for sometime. I'm glad Catriona was able to get it ready for Guelph. I'm also happy to hear that you are connected to Marion McDougall of Vaul who married Donald MacDonald of Caoles 15th December 1819. Cationa and my ancestors were the MacDougalls of Caoles who we think were connected to the MacDougalls of Vaul. First, regarding your MacDonalds, we have these ancestors and I wonder if you recognize the Marion or Hector MacDonald? -John McDougall married Marion MacDonald 28th Feb 1811. Next then had a daughter: -Christy MacDougall of Caoles (b.17 January1812 d. 9th February 1897) married Hector MacDonald Caoles 11th Feb 1835. Then, about your Marion MacDougall, I'm wondering if she is the daughter of John McDougall baptized 09 AUG 1788? If so, I'm guess her mother was Flory Kennedy? I have quite a bit of infomation on parts of this family (connected to me through my Clarks.) A group of us did a lot of work on the Vaul MacDougalls a couple years ago, trying to connect them to the Caoles MacDougalls. We still think there is some connection, but shelved the research because we didn't have any other leads at the time. So maybe you can help us fill in some more of the blanks. I will post a separate message about that research in case other people want to respond. Thanks for writing, Louise BC -----Original Message----- From: Ann Hentschel [mailto:ann@ebtech.net] Sent: Thursday, July 21, 2005 11:38 PM To: SCT-ARL-TIREE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SCT-ARL-TIREE] Re: MACDONALD and McDOUGALL Connection ...I'm wondering if there is a connection to our MACDONALDs and McDOUGALLs. 3. Hi Louise: After reading your recent postings to the TIREE-L I'm wondering if there is a connection to our MACDONALDs and McDOUGALLs. Did you get a copy of Catriona Smyth's "MacDOUGALLs In the Tiree and Coll OPR" at the Isle of Tiree Gathering in Guelph last year ? This is the entry that connects: Donald MacDONALD in Caolis & Marion McDOUGALL in Vaull were married after regular proclamation of Banns on 15th December 1819 by Rev. Mr. Neil McLean. All the Best, Ann Hentschel, Sarnia, Ontario.

    1. Clan Photos from the Brandon, Manitoba event.
    2. Louise MacDougall
    3. In answer to the question that was posted here a while back, these are the Tiree Clan names that were represented in Brandon, Manitoba who had photos taken. The photos and captions can be seen at: http://www.tireegathering.com Click "Brandon 2005", then "Photo Pages". There are instructions for printing the photos and also for viewing the captions on the same screen as the photos. The Clan photos include: 1. McLean 2. McKinnon 3. Lamont 4. McFadyen 5. McDougall 6. McDonald 7. Clark 8. McLeod Other Clans represented that day but not in separate photos were: BLACK, CAMPBELL, MACFARLANE, MCCANNELL, MACARTHUR, & MORRISON. And probably there were a number more that weren't obvious, or that people forgot to say they were in their ancestry (Like I forgot that my cousins and I should have had a Morrison photo taken.) Bear in mind that the people in the photos were not necessarily direct descendants, but may have only been connected to that clan by marriage. If you attended the Guelph Gathering, you will recognize a few of the smiling faces in the Brandon photos. Many thanks to everyone who attended the Brandon event and made it such a success. And particular thanks to Wallace Robertson for organizing the Clan Photos. Now,if enough Tiree folk show up in Shellmouth, I will have some more photos to show you this fall! Bye for now, Louise MacDougall Vancouver Island, BC

    2. Louise MacDougall
    3. Now is probably a good time for me to mention the Mull event. For those of you who might have Isle of Mull ancestry, there is a Mull Genealogy Gathering (MUGG 2006) running back to back with the Tiree one. The Mull one is the week BEFORE the Tiree one, i.e. the week of May 16. Exact dates have not been set yet. See details at: http://www.mullgenealogy.co.uk/ There is a link to the MUGG info in the left corner of the first page. I am planning to attend both gatherings. My MacDougalls were Tiree folk who came originally from the Isle of Mull. By the way, if you are planning to attend either of these events, I would suggest you arrange for accommodations as soon as you can. Cheers! Louise MacDougall Vancouver Island, Canada

    3. Hi Scott and all, Yes a website for the Tiree Homecoming has been posted at: http://www.isleoftiree.com/heritage/abhuain.html Although it doesn't give a lot of specifics yet, at least the dates are now published in black and white. By the way, in case you hadn't noticed, the days May 22-26 are all weekdays --Monday through Friday. It says they will be posting agenda details eventually. If you forget how to access the website through that avenue, you can also get to it by using the link on: http://www.tireegathering.com Then on the "Tiree Homecoming 2006" page, click "For more information". Cheers! Louise MacDougall Vancouve Island, Canada

    2. Scott Cameron
    3. Aye, thanks Sarah. Much appreciated. Here it is at the end of a very busy, hot day. I work as a lumber trader, buying and selling lumber. I saw your email early this morning and thought to myself I will save the best for last, that I am doing, before I relax and then start to pack for a two week vacation to the Maritimes in Eastern Canada. I will forward your email to all of my Tiree Contacts. As a matter of interest it was one year ago today that Guelph hosted the first world wide Isle of Tiree Descendants Gathering. 300+ from all over the world attended - Tiree - Scotland - UK - Australia - USA - Canada. It was awesome! www.tireegathering.com thereafter two more in Manitoba! I have been to Hynish - wonderful part of the island! Your email makes it all the more so enticing to attend. Many are still waiting for an agenda from Liz. Despite many requests I have received and asked of Liz, nothing has been received to me. I thought there were information packages being mailed or a website to me listed. What is the status on such? All the best. 1. RE: [SCT-ARL-TIREE] SHELLMOUTH, Manitoba, Canada -- "TIREE TEA" -- 4:00 pm July 31, 2005
    2. Louise MacDougall
    3. Oops, forgot about not being able to send attachments to this List. So the official Tiree Tea inviation was not attached, but it can be seen on the website: http://www.tireegathering.com Then click through on "Shellmouth 2005" By the way, the Shellmouth United Church is a designated Heritage Site. The McFadyen carpenters who built it in 1905 were descendants of Roderick McPhaiden and Catherine McKinnon who were married in Vaul in 1810. You will see the names mentioned on this Manitoba government website: http://www.gov.mb.ca/chc/hrb/mun/m204.html Cute "little white pioneer church" on the prairie, eh? Louise

    1. SHELLMOUTH, Manitoba, Canada -- "TIREE TEA" -- 4:00 pm July 31, 2005
    2. Louise MacDougall
    3. Well, folks, I thought doing a Tiree event in Brandon, Manitoba was really pushing the envelope for expecting Tiree folk to show up and talk about their family history. But that was such a success, that now I'm going to give it a try in Shellmouth, Manitoba. Shellmouth is about 200 miles northwest of Winnipeg and is so small it doesn't have a hotel or even a gas pump. However, on July 31 it will have a committed bunch of Tiree folk in town for another event -- the Centennial of the Shellmouth United Church. The organizers of that event have graciously allowed me to tag a Tiree event onto its coat tails. And so you are extended a warm invitation to join us for Tea, Photos, and Family History later in the afternoon. Please just drop in at tea time if you are in the area. Attached is an official invitation. Please forward it and this message to anyone who you think may be interested. Now, if you would also like to attend the Centennial church service and luncheon, which begins at 11:00 am, then please RSVP. There is no charge for any of the events, but the organizers need to know how many are coming for lunch. Between lunch and Tea Time, I will be recording & photographing a historic tour of the town which will be turned into a Self-Guided historical map-and-tape set so that future visitors to the town will be able to get a sense of where everything was in the olden days. Our guide will be Ellen McArthur, a Tiree descendant who is 91 years old. So why, you ask, would I drive all the way from Vancouver Island to Shellmouth, some 3,000 miles round trip? Because that's where my own Tiree family is from. And where you find one Tiree prairie pioneer, you can usually find a few more! There are many Tiree descendants buried in the Shellmouth cemeteries, including some of my own family. The Tiree folk who pioneered in the Shellmouth area were mainly of McFadyen, McLean, McDougall or McDonald descent (to the best of my knowledge at this point.) To read a bit about Shellmouth and it's wonderful restored pioneer church (originally built and recently restored in large part by Tiree folk), visit: www.tireegathering.com then click through on "Shellmouth 2005" There are maps showing where Shellmouth is and a great fish story for the guys! Enjoy, Louise MacDougall P.S. Please drop me a line if any of your Tiree folk settled in Shellmouth or elsewhere in Manitoba, and I haven't heard from you yet. Thanks for the kind comments, Babs. In return here's a wish for a Happy 4th of July to you and all my USA neighbours. And here's also a little tidbit of Tiree genealogy news that at least some Americans can take advantage of--those in the Pacific North West who perhaps already travel up to Vancouver, BC occasionally. Of course those Tiree folk right in the Vancouver area will benefit the most from this: A fellow researcher recently told me that the microfilm "FHL BRITISH Film 1041081" containing all of the Tiree Old Parish Records (OPR) is now permanently available in Surrey, BC at the Family History Centre which is run by the Latter Day Saint's Church. And I can verify that she is right because I had a chance to look at the film briefly the last time I was in Vancouver. Anyone can of course search a transcription of these records online at: http://www.familysearch.org but the online records only give the Parish location of "Tyree", and don't say in which township the event took place. The microfilm is actual photographs of the original Parish registers kept at Register House in Edinburgh. There is no charge to view the film, though there is of course a charge for photocopies. Because the film contains several different registers covering the period 1766-1854, it is very useful to do your research first on the website above, which searches across all the registers. Then if you take print outs with you of those results, you will have an easier time finding the entries on the film. The FHC also has computers which you can use for free to do the online searching, though there is a charge for printing. This FHC is at 6270-126th Street in Surrey, BC, phone 604-597-9695. It is closed for a summer break this month, but is scheduled to reopen on Aug. 2, 2005. I'm sorry that I can't offer to do look-ups on this film because I don't live anywhere near Vancouver. Don't be fooled by my address of Vancouver Island--it means a car-and-boat journey of at least 3 hours to get to Vancouver on the mainland. Perhaps there is someone else on this Mailing List who lives close to Surrey who might be willing to do look ups? If so, please let us know here on the list... Well, we've now covered Canada and the USA national holidays. Most other Tiree descendants are in Austrailia and New Zealand. So what & when are your national holidays, all you Down Under listers?
