I have 4 documents that indicate that my Alexander McDonald was born ~1811 and one that he was born ~1809. If his birth was recorded he may be one of the following 4 people. I would be happy if people could help me eliminate Alexanders from the list. Some births of Alexander McDonald recorded on Tyree (from Church CD and film): 10 June 1808 to Donald McDonald and Ann MacPhaiden at Balephuil. 26 Dec. 1810 to Hugh McDonald and Ann Henderson at Balepbetrish. 3 July 1811 & 27 Sept. 1807 to Archibald McDonald and Catherine Campbell at Csofsigain(?). 10 Jan. 1812 to Donald McDonald and Cathe. McKinnon at Kenovay. Thanks, Darryl
Margaret McLean was born 1804 at Haynish to the parents of Alexander McLean and Mary McInnis. Other children's names were: Donald 1797, John 1798 , Marion 1806, Ann 1808 and another Donald 1811.. I have not followed up on this family and have not come across a Hugh McLean. Guelph Mercury - Wednesday, October 12, 2005 - Page A8 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scotland calling its ex-pats back SANDRO CONTENTA LONDON (Oct 12, 2005) Scotland wants its sons and daughters living in Canada to pack up their tartans and return to their homeland. Canadians of Scottish ancestry, particularly those in Toronto, are being targeted in a campaign to stop Scotland's dramatic population decline with appeals to return to the old country. But forget the romantic images of castles, glens and, for some, haggis: the nation's leaders want to lure back Canadian Scots with talk of vibrant financial services sectors and cutting- edge universities. "The traditional image is very important to us, but it is an image that is in the past," said Jack McConnell, first minister of the devolved Scottish parliament. "The image of Scotland today that we want to make sure people are aware of is of a country with increasingly dynamic and attractive cities," he added in an interview yesterday. McConnell, leader of Scotland's Labour party, will deliver his sales pitch to an estimated 4.5 million Canadians with Scottish backgrounds during a trip to Ottawa and Toronto in two weeks. He'll also ask expatriates from the business community to invest in Scotland and spread the good word about the country. His quest to lure back Scottish expatriates also takes him to the United States, Australia and South Africa. Emigration and declining birthrates have seen Scotland's population steadily decline over the past 12 years to 5.1 million. It's expected to drop below the 5 million mark by the end of the next decade. Estimates place the Scottish diaspora as high as 90 million, based on those claiming at least one Scottish great-grandparent. Scots who migrated south to England have been so successful there's talk that Britain is being run by a "Tartan Raj." Powerful Scots include Prime Minister Tony Blair, who was born in Edinburgh but raised in England. McConnell tried to change some far less romantic images of Scotland before setting out on his charm offensive. Scotland is, quite literally, the "sick man of Europe." Heavy smoking and a taste for coating foods in batter have taken their toll. A 2003 study by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine found that from 1991 to 1995, the mortality rate in Scotland was the worst in Western Europe among people of working age. Scotland led in deaths by heart disease and came in second among 17 countries for stroke and lung cancer deaths. In 2000, women had the lowest life expectancy in Europe and men the second lowest. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think that this solves a mystery for me. In the 1861 census of Mariposa Township. Victoria Co, is listed a Christina as living with the family of Alexander McIntyre/ Mary McKinnon. She is listed after their children but does mot appear in the 1841 Tiree census, or in the OPR as one of their clildren. Her age is given as 22 I believe. > **1841 census: > Possible (likely) location of Christina McDonald born April 1, 1835 at > time of 1841 Tiree census: > Household - name - age - occupation - location - born in county > > 786 McINTYRE Alexander 35 Crofter Kenvary Yes > 786 McINTYRE Mary 30 Kenvary Yes > 786 McINTYRE Catherine 12 Kenvary Yes > 786 McINTYRE Marion 10 Kenvary Yes > 786 McINTYRE Ann 8 Kenvary Yes > 786 McINTYRE Mary 6 Kenvary Yes > 786 McINTYRE Margaret 4 Kenvary Yes > > 787 McINTYRE Ann 60 Kenvary Yes > 787 McINTYRE Malcolm 25 Crofter Kenvary Yes > 787 McINTYRE Neil 25 tailor Kenvary Yes > 787 McINTYRE Isabella 20 Kenvary Yes > 787 McDONALD Christina 6 Kenvary Yes > >>>>>>>>>> > > *****The McIntyre family: > > Dougald McIntyre married Ann McDonald at Cornaigmore, Tyree December 1, > 1789. A Mary (born about 1854) and a Sarah (born about 1857) are also listed in the census but I am unsure if they were children of Alexander due to the duplication of names (I know that the Mary born in Tiree died about 1887. Alexander McIntyre and Mary McKinnon and their children Dougald, John, Hector amd Mary are all buried in the Scotch Cem., Brock Towhship. Ontario Co, Ontario, which is adjacent to Mariposa Township. Dear Shirley Sorry I didn't get back to you. My Dad died last year and that was followed by the illness and death of Mom this spring. Needless to say, my genealogy has taken a back seat for a while. I am back into things, but at the moment have just taken on the chair of the Mull Genealogical Gathering next year. I am trying to get my Ontario files organized and get the names back in my head. I used to recognize families almost instantly, but as I've been away from them for a while, I've lost that. I've printed off these letters and once my Mull week (I just returned from a planning week) is on paper, I will see what I can find. Shortly thereafter, my g grandfather John McIntyre was born there. John McIntyre married in 1883 Mary McKinnon of Osprey Township, Grey Co. Mary was the daughter of Hugh McKinnon, who also came from Tiree. I have not verified the name of Hugh's wife (they married in Canada) but I believe that it was Margaret Cameron, who may well have also been from Tiree. She died shortly after the birth of Mary (their only child). In 1862 Hugh McKinnon remarried, his second wife being Ann McIntyre, daughter of my gg grandfather Alexander McIntyre. Thus John McIntyre's father in law was also his brother in law:) Regards, Deane McIntyre

Aye, Hi Ken, thanks for the reply. I would like to make a suggestion, as Rootsweb - Tiree Administrator ...how about we all include our location when we post...just a suggestion...as you wish....might make of interesting thought. Cheers, Scott Cameron / MacLean - Guelph, Ontario, Canada Back to Ken's comments....I can't take credit for the originating source...it came from my dear friend and many other's dear friend - Lachie Brown of Isle of Tiree...you see I met Lachie when he came to Guelph last year when he round his passport 24 hours in advance of the commencement of the Gathering in Guelph - great guy, but then again aren't we all as descendants of Tiree! As far as McCallum descendants go .... (there used to be a family in London named McCallum when I was a youngster that I knew, but that was long before I knew of Tiree)...however, on Keith Dash's surname list, let's see....I checked the list...you are the only McCallum on the list Ken. If anyone can help Ken, please let us know. Cheers, Scott - Guelph - weather report - dark, nite! ----- Original Message ----- From: "kmaccall" <kmaccall@snet.net> To: <SCT-ARL-TIREE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 04, 2005 8:21 PM Subject: [SCT-ARL-TIREE] Senator Lachlan McCallum > Scott - thanks for posting the url to the first part of the article on > Senator Lachlabn McCallum. Excellent new Isle of Tiree, Scotland website. Thank you Lachie! Cheers, Scott http://pages.123-reg.co.uk/craig28-505/reflectionoftiree/index.html
Bard of Tiree - stay tuned in the days to follow - John MacLean - we were there - James River / Barney River, Nova Scotia! LOVED IT! Thanks Louise! Cheers, Scott LOUDLY YELLING - EXELLENT TRIP TO THE MARITIMES !!!
Just came across this reference to Tiree. I was surprised to learn that there was an over population problem well before the 1849-1851 period. PP 1802-3 (45) IV 1 Thomas Telford, A Survey and Report of the Coasts and Central Highlands of Scotland (1802). Telford had a remit of five points, including promoting fisheries, improving communications, and investigating the causes of emigration and the means of preventing it. ".........The very high Price of Black Cattle has also facilitated the Means of Emigration, as it has furnished the older Farmers with a Portion of Capital which enables them to transport their Families beyond the Atlantic. In some few Cases a greater Population than the Land can support in any Shape, has been the Cause of Emigrations; such was the Island of Tiree. Some have, no doubt, been deluded by Accounts sent back from others gone before them; and many deceived by artful Persons, who hesitate not to sacrifice these poor ignorant People to selfish Ends..........."
I have wondered what the connection might be between John the Bard and my John McLean of the Big Island across from Merigomish. Several buried in the same graveyard. Arrived in Pictou probably the same time. In my boxes of papers are the transciptions from the gravestone when we visited in 97. Elinor Perlich ----Original Message Follows---- From: Louise MacDougall <macdougallclan@shaw.ca> Reply-To: SCT-ARL-TIREE-L@rootsweb.com To: SCT-ARL-TIREE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SCT-ARL-TIREE] Bard John McLean of Tiree and Nova Scotia (1787-1848) Date: Fri, 22 Jul 2005 13:58:22 -0700 Scott has mentioned that he is going to be in Nova Scotia, and I am sending him some info on Bard John McLean of Tiree who settled there in 1819. I'll post a few points here in case anyone else is travelling that way this summer. Bard John McLean (1787-1848), perhaps Tiree's most well known Bard, emigrated from Tiree in 1819 and settled in Barney's River, Pictou County, Nova Scotia. Very early emigration compared to most of our ancestors in Canada! His most famous song "Gloomy Forest" sent back to Scotland, became popular there and actually discouraged folk from emigrating. There is a cairn to him at Glen Bard, 9 miles west of Antigonish town. And his gravestone should still be in Marshy Hope. There's a write up about the Bard on this NS website (first page about half way down), as well as some interesting info about the longest running Gaelic newspaper --which was in NS not Scotland! http://www.ambraighe.ca/gaelicNS.htm The website comes from Cape Breton and is about Gaelic culture. There is even a Gaelic college around there. Some of you might want to subscribe to their journal. I imagine there are still descendants of the Bard's in Nova Scotia. About 1950, there were 2 Gaelic scholars in NS that were his descendants: George Sinclair of Hopewell and Rev. Donald Sinclair of Halifax. Probably some family of theirs are still in the province. My cousin Catirona Smyth, who is fairly closely related to the Bard, tells me most McLeans from the East End of Tiree are related to him in some fashion. If any of you reading this are related to him, please post a message here. Does anyone have photos of the cairn and/or gravestone? If not, maybe Scott will make a pilgrimage to them and take some shots, eh Scott? Louise ============================== Search the US Census Collection.
