Barb: I have run across this family as a result of my research on my McKinnon ancestors who came from Tiree and settled in Osprey township about 1850. My McIntyre ancestors are also from Tiree but settled in Mariposa township, Victoria Co., Ontario also about 1850. From the Tiree register I have, in addition to the John b. 1845 you mention, I also have a John McIntyre, sone of Archibald McIntyre and Catherine Lamont, born in 1841. I presume that he died young and the name "John" reused for another son. I have the marriage of Archibald McIntyre to Catherine Lamont as haven taken place 20 December, 1837. From the register I have Catherine Lamont as being born 9 March, 1816, in Cornaigmore, baptised 20 March 1816, the daughter of John Lamont and Mary McIntyre. John Lamont of Balevulin and Mary McIntyre of Corningmore were married 17 May, 1815. There is a Mary McIntyre born in Corningmore in 1792, the daughter of Dougand McIntyre and Ann McDonald, but there are a couple of other Mary McIntyres born on the island in the right timeframe so I cam unsure if this is the Mary McIntyre that married John Lamont. My gg grandfather Alexander McIntyre, born 1801, is a brother of the Mary McIntyre born in Corningmore in 1792. Regards, Deane McIntyre

Cheers, Scott -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Attached you will find a letter which the Archivist on Tiree has asked me to forward to you for distribution to the Tiree Mailing Lists. In it, Catriona Hunter tells how An Iodhlann (the Tiree Archive) has been successful in acquiring a whole THREE years of funding to computerize Tiree genealogy records at the Archive! This will create an amazing linked database, preserving known records and creating a genealogical legacy for future generations. I would like to point out that, although the Tiree Archive is very good at securing government funding every year for various projects, this letter tells of the breakthrough they have made in being approved to receive funding specifically for genealogy. Earlier this year, the Archive invited a handful of their members from around the world to write letters of support to accompany an application for this funding. I would personally like to thank everyone who accepted the invitations and wrote wonderful letters. And I’m sure all the Tiree family historians out there will join with me in expressing our gratitude to the anonymous Canadian donor whose generous contribution made it possible for the Archive to launch their genealogy project a couple years ago. No doubt this pilot project played a large role in the Archive being approved to continue their genealogy work. Although the Archive is located on the Isle of Tiree, it encourages membership from around the world. We're very grateful for all the help and support we received in making our application. In 2002 we received our largest ever donation of £4,000 from a friend in Canada of Tiree descent particularly targeted at our genealogy section. As well as buying a new computer dedicated to genealogy, some new office furniture, two new software packages (Roots Magic and Family Tree Maker), the Old Parish Registers for Mull, Iona and Coll, the 1881 British Census on CD-ROM and a microfilm of the 1855 Tiree Valuation Roll (the list of ratepayers), we conducted a pilot study for the genealogy project. The project involves entering all the marriages in the Old Parish Registers between 1815 and 1854 plus the children from these marriages into individual family files using RootsMagic software. As there will be approximately 1,600 marriages in the period, the names of the spouses will put on an Access database to allow us to search for and find individual family files. This database will also allow us link the families to material already in the archive such as estate documents, procurator fiscal reports and family histories donated by the descendants of Tiree emigrants. It's unfortunate that when A' Bhuain starts we will only be at the beginning of the project which will run for three years. However, we are very excited about it as we think it has enormous potential for further work. Listers, My Mary MacLean was born ca. 1808 to Lachlan MacLean (crofter) and Mary MacLean born Macfadyen (MacPhaiden), who were married in the Kilninian Parish on 13 Oct 1795. Mary MacNeill, nee MacLean died on 26 Oct 1861 at Moss, Tyree. Her son, Neil MacNeill was present. Does anybody have any more information on this family or see a connection? TIA, Gail in Switzerland

As you know, sadly, Gordon Scott has sold his Isle of Tiree Online News website. Unfortunately, the Tiree genealogy lists that Gordon kindly provided room for have been dropped in the re-construction of the new site. A few of us have tossed around the idea of a new purpose-built website for Tiree genealogy, similar to that of Ian Phillip's Mull Genealogy website. Until this becomes a reality, I have for the time being 'parked' the Tiree genealogy lists at my own website, www.keithdash.net. These are the Tiree Surnames List, Overseas Cemetery Records, and Tiree Parish Register 1766-1774. The first two will remain active lists, i.e they will be updated regularly.
