Is anyone else researching this McDonald family? Catherine McDonald in the 1861 census is my great-grandmother, but I am unable to find her brother John. According to family lore, he possibly went to New Zealand. Are Niel Seaton of the 1841 and Niel McDonald of the 1851 the same person? Did Allan McDonald marry unknown Seaton and then Mary (nee) McDonald. I think that Catherine McDonald 's maiden name is McLean (age 60 in 1841). I am at a total loss because of the common occurrence of McDonald in the records!! Can anyone help me sort it out? Ann, No, no definitive answer yet. I also have a spreadsheet that contains the Cameron baptisms and marriages, which I got in Guelph. But I think that someone has done the whole parish register. Hello Everyone: I don't know if anyone has answered this question yet but the Tiree OPR Registers 1766-1774 are on Keith Dash's website www.keithdash.net . Regards, Ann Hentschel
Hi Babs, If you have a hard copy of the Tiree OPR Register I would be grateful to know who transcribed the Register in the hope that I can make contact and perhaps acquire one myself. I could then make some photocopies which would be most helpful at the 2006 Gathering on Tiree. Really looking forward to the Gathering and meeting all those Tiree descendants. Regards. Nanette
I don't Russ, but I do have a hard copy. I'll dig it out and see if there is a name on it and let you know. Will you be on Tiree in May? Hope so. Babs
I seem to recall at the Guelph Gathering that someone had transcribed the Tiree OPR (parish records, births and marriages) in soft copy and was making it available on floppy. Does anyone know who that was? Russ McGillivray

Hi again Tiree folk, I received the information about the Canadian Fallen Heroes Foundation from Wallace and Jeanette Robertson of Winnipeg. It is a project to memorialize every Canadian, who died serving in the Military, by means of a poster with his or her photograph and short biography, to be displayed in perpetuity in an accessible, community location . Wallace and Jeanette will be travelling to Brandon today for the ceremony in honour of 46 fallen heroes of that area. Two of those are relatives of Wallace, an Uncle Harold Robertson and a cousin Harold McLean. Wallace is a direct descendant of the McLeans of "Manitoba House" in Balephuill, Tiree. The display is being held as follows; Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium University of Brandon Campus Brandon, Manitoba Monday, January 30th, 2006 Time: 7 to 9 P.M. Here is the URL for the Fallen Heroes website: http://www.canadianfallenheroes.ca Unfortunately, the searchable database for all 117,000 heroes is not functioning yet. But if you think that one of your relatives should be included in the project, you can contact the Foundation to see if they need you to send any information to them. There is no charge for their service. The project is a Canadian charity and any donations made to it are tax deductible. This is a short write up which I found on the Net: "According to Mark Norman, founder of the Canadian Fallen Heroes Foundation, "Canadians have a debt of immense gratitude to the men and women of our military who met our country's call in its time of need. We can never begin to repay them, but we can remember them, every ONE of them." And that is exactly what Norman and his Fallen Heroes Foundation have set out to do. Their goal is to produce one personal memorial print for all 117,000 Canadian men and women that have died in either the Boer War, WWI, WWII, or other UN peacekeeping missions." A full page newspaper spread has been published of the Brandon area Fallen Heroes, showing all 46 of their photographs. I will forward a copy to Scott Cameron for him to send out to his Tiree List (which does allow pictures). In addition to Wallace's relatives mentioned above, there is a George Fraser McLaurin being honoured who is related to the Lamonts of Cornaigbeg, Tiree (Peter Lamont who married Ann McLean and emigrated to Canada on the Conrad in 1851). There may be other Tiree descendants on the Brandon honour roll, but it is not obvious from the surnames listed. If you would like to see the names and photos for Brandon, but do not belong to Scott's List, I'm sure he will be glad to send you the pictures if you send him an email. Do let the List know if you are aware of any more Tiree descendants in Canada who have been honoured as Fallen Heroes in this worthwhile project. Sincerely, Louise MacDougall Vancouver Island, BC Canada
Hello everyone on the Tiree List, Since it's still January, I think I can just barely get away with sending out New Year's greetings, can't I? At the same time, though, I'm saddened to hear of Neil MacKinnon's passing. He was such a generous soul, sharing his photographs as he did. Last May, when I was launching the "Tiree Descendants in Manitoba" project in Brandon, Neil was so quick to make a special trip over to "Manitoba House" in Balephuill and arrange with the MacArthurs to take some wonderful photos of their place. There is a sign in their window that says "Manitoba" in remembrance of the McLeans who left that croft to become pioneers in Manitoba in 1878. One of these McLeans, Bard John McLean, married my grandfather's Aunt Flora McLean, so the photos were of special significance to me. My heartfelt condolences go out to Neil's family. In his generosity, Neil left a legacy of Tiree photographs that will long be treasured. Coincidentally, tomorrow, there is a remembrance ceremony happening in Brandon, Manitoba for "Canadian Fallen Heroes". It just so happens that two descendants of those "Manitoba House McLeans" will be honoured as war heroes. I will put the information about that project in a separate email. Looking forward to seeing many people who read this List at the Homecoming in Tiree in May, Louise MacDougall Vancouver Island, BC, Canada

Poor souls there in Canada. Here in the south - Minnesota that is - we are enjoying 42 degrees Fahrenheit marching towards 48 later this afternoon with bright, sunny skies, 12 mph of wind (which lowers the "feels like" temperature to 36.) On the 26th of January when we are frequently in the grips of below zero temps - WE'LL TAKE IT. Greetings to all Tireelean cousins. Babs
