Those who attended the 2004 Tiree Gathering in Guelph, Canada, will remember the elegant Excel spreadsheet of the 1841 census data for Tiree, with surnames and place-names standardized, that Russ McGillivray and Louise MacDougall prepared for that occasion. Through their generosity, the spreadsheet can now be viewed and searched at www.keithdash.net - just click on the link "1841 Census" at the top of the Homepage. You need Microsoft Excel or Excel Viewer installed on your computer to view the census data. If you don't have Excel you can get Excel Viewer as a free download at www.microsoft.com/downloads. The 1841 census was not the first UK-wide census (they had been conducted every 10 years from 1801), but it was the first to record names, ages and occupations, which is why the results are so valued by genealogists. Thank you, Russ & Louise. _________________ Keith Dash Sydney, Australia
The Source & Family tabs are a long scroll down to the bottom of the opening (Source) page. Took me a while to find them too! Thank you to all for making the transcription available to us. It is a good source, though I found none of my McEacherns/McEachrens listed. They should have been there as they did not emigrate to Canada until 1847. Hi Russ: Many thanks, found my MacDONALD's under "Family" on the bottom toolbar. This is great, many thanks Russ. 28 MacDONALD, Donald; age 56; cotter; Caolis. 28 MacDONALD, Marion [nee MacDOUGALL]; age 50; wife; Caolis. 28 MacDONALD, Effy; age 15; dau.; Caolis. 28 MacDONALD, Hector; age 13; son; Caolis. 28 MacDONALD, Hugh; age 11; son; Caolis. 28 MacDONALD, Neil; age 9; son; Caolis. Hugh and Neil emigrated to Canada sometime before 1869. My interest, Neil, settled in Mooretown, Ontario and became a farmer. He was formerly a sailor. Family stories say that Hugh settled up in the Bruce but we've found no records to prove this. Hope someone on the List is researching this family. Thought I'd post my plea to the Argyll-Bute gentleman in the hope of having them realise the value of having a 'real' archivist. Anne Maye. To Mr James McLellan, As with so many other researchers I am surprised to hear that Mr Murdo MacDonald will be replaced by a non archivist part time. I fully understand that $$$$ drive so many Council decisions but there are many hidden benefits in dollar and Public Relations terms that are not immediately obvious. The first which comes to mind is tourism. This field is becoming even more highly competitive and the tourist dollars are being dispersed far more widely around the globe. The field of genealogy generates so much interest that I know many people who 'spread the word' and encourage others to save for that trip or the next to discover and explore their roots. There is an enormous network of people of goodwill who enthusiastically share their knowledge and family ties and who tread the hills their ancestors once trod. This has a flow on effect for generations to come and I suggest that it is to Council's detriment in the longer term that the position of Archivist be downgraded rather than expanded and perhaps even promoted. This is without considering the general maintenance of the archives, a resource to which we could not begin to ascribe a dollar value for now or the future. I implore you to ask Council to give careful and serious consideration to any decision re an Archivist. Anne Maye Armidale, New South Wales, Australia
I wonder if this isn't a tape of a talk by Dr. Margaret McKay of the School of Scottish Studies, Univ of Edinburgh, who has done much research on Tiree emigration and published numerous articles. BTW, she is scheduled to speak at the Tiree Gathering 2006. (just the guess of a genealogist used to jumping to conclusions based on similarities of name!) Last year while surfing the Internet, I came across a listing for this recording at Radford University in Virginia, "Audio/Cass. DA750. MM1SS36.1993.1 Scottish Emigrants: Tiree to Canada By Maggie McKay". I emailed the University, but I did not receive any reply. Do any of our listers know of this recording or of Ms. McKay? The "Statistical Account of Scotland (1791-1799)" and "The New Statistical Account of Scotland (1834-1835)" give detailed descriptions of life and society in each parish of the country. They are key source documents for anybody interested in the social history of Scotland, particularly those who wonder what the conditions at home were like that persuaded their ancestors to emigrate. In the course of his family history research Iain Campbell made comprehensive summaries of the entries for the Parish of Tiree & Coll in both the 'Old' and 'New' Statistical Accounts, and has generously offered to share them with us. You can download Iain's summaries at www.keithdash.net - just click on the "Statistical Accounts" link. Also on the Statistical Accounts webpage is a summary of the entry for the Parish of Tiree & Coll in "A Topographical Dictionary of Scotland (1846)", by Samuel Lewis, which covered much the same ground but in less detail than "The New Statistical Account". As well as being the author of these summaries of the Statistical Accounts, Iain is also the author of the searchable spreadsheet of the census data for Tiree in "The Inhabitants of the Argyll Estate, 1779" at www.keithdash.net. Any thanks should be directed to him; I'm just the medium. His address is <iain.campbell2@tesco.net> . _________________ Keith Dash Sydney, Australia
The census of his estates commissioned by the Duke of Argyll in 1779 listed the name, age and place of residence of every man, woman & child in Tiree. The census data were transcribed and edited by the late Eric Cregeen of the University of Edinburgh and published in 1963 under the title "Inhabitants of the Argyll Estate, 1779". It is one of the most important reference sources for people interested in their Tiree ancestry, but copies are hard to come by. Iain Campbell, a great-great-grandson of Hector Campbell & Ann McEachern of Balinoe (and a distant cousin of many people of Tiree descent in Australia or New Zealand) has extracted the 1779 census data for Tiree and entered them into a searchable spreadsheet. He asked if I would like to add the spreadsheet to the Tiree Genealogy website, and for something of this importance I didn't need to be asked twice!! It can be downloaded (and searched) at www.keithdash.net - from the Homepage click on "Argyll Estate 1779". You will need Microsoft Excel or Excel Viewer installed on your computer to download the spreadsheet. If you don't have Excel you can get a free download of Excel Viewer at www.microsoft.com/downloads (click on "More popular downloads" and scan down). Keith Dash Sydney, Australia
Aye Mary, thanks for the thought provoking email. Who is up for another Gathering in Guelph? This time we must get a group photo! After this read I am not to sure what the Guelph Tiree group of Archie, Leanne, Ross and John are thinking, but I imagine Lachie (Tiree) and Ian (Australia) are already packing in anticipation! I will clear the kitchen table at the Cameron Croft for another "early morning" session! Seriously though Mary, there is nothing under review for planning. However, change is constant, so with that there may be again in the future. If you are in the Guelph area be sure to drop by. In the meantime, the Isle of Tiree, Scotland is planning a Gathering this May, 2006. Details as follows: http://www.isleoftiree.com/ I see Lassie Babs already emailed you on such. Thanks Babs. Mary, you will no doubt here from J. Scott Cameron who put together a most excellent Gathering of the descendants of Tiree in Guelph in July 2004. The next Gathering is planned for Tiree in May 2006. There is a web site with information or you can email Liz at _tcb@tireebroadband.com_ (mailto:tcb@tireebroadband.com) or info on _www.isleoftiree.com_ (http://www.isleoftiree.com) We had a wonderful time in Guelph thanks to Scott and Leanne and looking for even more great times on Tiree in May. All the Best, Barbara Humphrey "Babs"

Hello Russ and all Tiree friends and cousins. Please forgive my delay in searching out these records. Busy, busy with Scottish evernts. The Black Watch are coming on February 14th to St. Paul and I have been organizing group tickets for our community, and then there was a Kirkin' yesterday, and on it goes. Okay, this is what I have: Tiree Old Parish Register, All Marriages 1766-1854, an obvious data base print out. I bought this at the Gathering in Guelph. The name on the cover is Lynn S. (or G.) Clark. Also, Records for Tyree, Argyll, Scotland, Taken from microfiche at church of Latter Day Saitns, Hingham, MA. (The transcriber says: The number i.e. M115514 is the BATCH number and the following number is the PAGE number. Since I was interested in the nbame Cameron these are the records I copied except Cammeron.) At the end of the document he says "The above information was taken on June 1, 1995. I cannot find my original papers but this is a listing which I made soon after. I am sure that I have made some mistakes BUT there were a lot of inconsistencies on the microfiches. I hope that this may be of some use to anyone looking up relatives who lived on Tyree. If by chance I should find my original papers, in the great stack on hand, I'll send any corrections that I find. Since I only found Christening records I have used them,on my genealogy, as birthdates as there is no telling when the actual dates were. Good Luck Bill Tormey) I also have a Transcript of Entries in the Tiree Parish Register 1766-1774. In the introdution is says: "The original transcript of entries in the Tiree parish register for the years 1766 - 1774, reproduced on LDS Film No. 0845450, was made by Archibald Strath Maxwell, a professional genealogy researcher. It is undated but was probably made many years ago. The date presented here were transcribed from the original transcript in May-June 2003 by Ann Hentshel and edited by Keith Dash." Includes: 1. Marriages Recorded in the Tiree Parish Register 1766-1774 2. Baptisms Recorded in the Tiree Parish Register 1766-1774 3. Proceedings of Kirk-Sessions Recorded in the Tiree Parish Register 1766-1774 Because I am a rotten genealogist, I don't know where I got this list. I think I downloaded it from something that was emailed to me at least 3 years ago. As I am slowly unloading some of my responsibilities to the Scottish community here in Minnesota, I promise to be better at this record keeping in the future. I think it all amounts to a whole lot of nothing new. Sorry, friends. All the Best, Barbara Humphrey, "Babs"
Thank you for putting this information online. I can see that I will be spending many hours over the next few days looking at all of these names.
