Greetings Isle of Tiree Descendants from Around the World! On Tuesday, April 6, 2004 Leanne Piper, Archie MacKinnon, Ross McLean and I, all of Guelph, Ontario, Canada and descendants of the Isle of Tiree met at the Guelph home, where the St. Andrew's Cross flag proudly flew, of Archie and Gene MacKinnon for a lovely luncheon, complete with sweets, ale and tea, and an Isle of Tire Descendants Gathering meeting. What a lovely sunny day it was, that being Tartan Day with Archie and I in our kilts as Calum MacKinnon and Skipinnish CD's played in the background! I was at least 10' tall as I hiked from my home, 200 metres to the west, to Archie's, home of the green VW van with license plate "TYREE" parked in the driveway, in my kilt, knitted sweater, staff and backpack, and ah yes . . . my sporran with a flask of Scotland's finest single malt! Further to the Isle of Tiree Gathering website www.tireegathering.com in addition to the activities listed on the website as per below are a few additions and changes to be had. Friday, July 23, 2004 - As listed on the website www.tireegathering.com . Archie has events well underway with the University of Guelph's Scottish Studies and Archives. Thank you Archie. Saturday, July 24, 2004 - As listed on the website + Gathering in the Royal City Park in the afternoon. Be certain to bring your family tree, photographs, anything related to Tiree, etc. to be displayed on your own table at Harcourt United Church throughout the Gathering commencing on the Saturday at Harcourt United Church. Harcourt United Church has a wonderful garden and kitchen that will be available for our use. If possible please bring duplicates or whatever you have to display, i.e. family tree, stories, photographs, maps, etc. which we are intending to put together into a booklet format for publication and resale at cost. Leanne's publishing company is going to look after this. What a treasure. Thank you Leanne. For those with video cameras I plan to collect everyone's video tapes and put onto a master tape for resale at cost to all. If you can give me your videotape at the end of the Gathering terrific, if not please send me a VHS copy in the mail when you return home. There will be entertainment at Royal City Park at the Gazebo near the Boathouse http://www.iloveicecream.com/boathouse_tea_room.htm on the banks of the Speed River. We are also planning to have a parade from Harcourt United Church http://www3.sympatico.ca/harcourtuc after the table top presentations and speaker in the morning to Royal City Park lead by several pipers. This walk through residential neighborhoods will last for about 1 km. For those who can, please bring your lawn chairs and blanket as there is limited seating in the park re: picnic table / benches. No doubt some will drive to the park and can transport the chairs. There are several locations near the park to get lunch, refreshments, ice cream, etc.. Entertainment at the park will include the Guelph Pipe Band http://theguelphpipeband.tripod.com/, Tiree's Pipe Band and Skipinnish. All others attending the Gathering are welcome to perform as well whether it be with music, dance, poetry, story telling, etc. Bring your talents to the park for all to enjoy! Saturday, July 24, 2004 - As listed on the website + Ceilidh in the Evening As a result of the number of people attending the Gathering the location for the Saturday evening functions will not take place at the Boathouse, but instead take place at the Colonial John McRae Memorial Legion Branch 234 http://www.on.legion.ca/_shell.asp?page=170001&branch=234 . The evening will include a ceilidh in the format of those on Tiree, in the "Bruce" of days gone by and today and along the same format of ceilidhs that I have attended in Guelph. Many are referred to as Community or Kitchen Ceilidhs where those attending are also the entertainment. Performers will include the Guelph Pipe Band http://theguelphpipeband.tripod.com , Tiree Pipe Band, Skipinnish http://www.footstompin.com/artists/skipinnish , Calum MacKinnon http://www.sagearts.com/htrec/camac.html and many others attending the Gathering including myself and members of my family. Archie's wife Gene, is expected to be calling a Scottish dance specially formatted for the Gathering. Others from the community of Guelph will be encouraged to participate as well. For those from Guelph and area if you are in Guelph during the Gathering and wish to perform please contact me if you are interested in performing. All are encouraged to participate whether it be a musical performance, story, poetry, skit, dance, etc. Please confirm with me in order that the Ceilidh may be scheduled accordingly. The evening will also include a cash bar, luncheon and lots of fun and merriment! Bring your music, fiddle, flute, guitar, songs, dance, skits, stories, poems, etc. There will be a piano there too. Bring along photocopies of any songs for all to sing-a-long too! Sunday, July 25, 2004 - Exploring Day - Bruce County Museum - Bruce County Cemeteries - Backroads Several Gatherers have written to me pertaining to the possibility of chartering a bus for the day. Originally the plan was to carpool / convoy those attending the Gathering to the "Bruce". However, today I investigated the cost of chartering a motorcoach bus complete with air conditioning, washroom, PA system, entertainment facilities, driver, "Scotty the Tour Guide", etc.. Denny's Bus Lines http://www.dennysbuslines.ca/Denny1/Welcome_to_Dex.html can accommodate our Gathering with three sizes of buses 47, 55, 56 passenger. Denny's has three 56 passenger buses which are the most modern and state of the art in their fleet. Regardless of the size of bus(es) we charter, for $ 25.00 CDN per person everyone can travel for up to 15 hours on the Sunday to and from the "Bruce" in comfort! I have yet to book the bus. I will only do this when I have enough passengers who will commit to traveling on the bus in order to cover the costs. If this is something that you are interest! ed in please confirm NOW with the total number of people traveling in your party. The day will include leaving Guelph in the morning and returning in the evening. Our time is for us to maximize so long as accomplished within 15 hours. The trip to the "Bruce" is about 2 hours, likewise for the return to Guelph. While traveling we can enjoy a trip through backroads of where our ancestors settled in the Bruce, visits to cemeteries, tour of the Bruce County Museum and Archives http://www.brucecounty.on.ca/museum/ in Southampton, Ontario http://www.sunsets.com/southampton/ , all along the beautiful sandy shores of Lake Huron which is rated as one to the top three sunset locations in the world. Time can be had for breaks, lunch and dinner, etc.. No doubt it will be a busy day, but most fun, relaxing and memorable. Please confirm today. As of writing we have 51 families who have registered on the website. No doubt many more have yet to register. If you have registered, thank you, if you have not please do not delay, spread the word and register today! Many others will be attending the Gathering the day(s) of and registering at that time. If you have already done so great, if not please check out the details on the Tiree Interconnections at www.tireegathering.com . Louis MacDougall and Russ McGillvary are building a database of worldwide linkage of Tiree families. Thank you Louis and Russ. In closing, thank you everyone for your encouragement, enthusiasm, suggestions and compliments. Loud cheers to Leanne, Archie and Ross for their excellent participation. All the best, see you soon. . . in only 3 months! I hope I have not forgotten anything. If I have no doubt I will send out another email! In the meantime I welcome your feedback. Happy Easter! What a tragedy! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- With respect to the motorcoach bus, as per below is an inquiry on such which I received yesterday from Donna Ezsol of Vernon, British Columbia: Donna >>> Good work! I think this would help people who have no idea about the country roads (That is where I fit in) and then anyone who wants to go back on their own to their specific area to snoop around will have a better idea on what to do. I have found that it always takes a day to get oriented in an area at any rate and $ 25 is very good deal. Otherwise those of us that have never been in the area could just be floundering - madly off in all directions - but particular direction. I'm all for it. Scott >>> Well said Donna. $ 25.00 is inexpensive. It would cost more in fuel alone, mileage, etc. for two people traveling in a car. Furthermore, traveling in a bus will offer time for learned sightseeing, conversation, relaxation, entertainment and no need to be fumbling with a map wondering where to go. Bring along your cameras, pen and notepad. There will be lots to see and do. Donna >>> I also like the idea of someone telling us where we are and what we are looking at. That would be a great help. Scott >>> No doubt this will be most beneficial. I am very familiar with the area as are others that may be traveling on the bus. Donna >>> About lunch. I have no idea if there is a place to buy groceries near where I will be staying (the Ramada Inn) or not or if the hotel will pack a sack lunch but I do like the idea of pack our own lunch. Takes much less time out of the day. Eating is just a thing I have to do, and takes up valuable time. I'm sure others don't necessarily feel the same but this is one time where we would all want to pack as much into the day as we could. Of course there would have to be a prearranged stop for a bathroom break. Must be a park where the bus could stop and we could all do our business at the lunch break. Scott >>> Local to the Ramada Inn, Day's Inn and UoG is a grocery store, right across the street . . . Domenic's No Frills. I regularly shop there. Lots of great selection. No doubt Ramada, UoG, Shakespeare Arm's ( a local pub / restaurant http://www.shakespearearms.ca ) can all package a "brown bag". Several coolers could be made available the bus in order to keep food and drink. Located in the same plaza as the grocery store and pub is a Laundromat, post office, medical clinic and several other stores and restaurants. Donna >>>About "first come first serve" do mean on Sunday or to pay now or at least sign up now? Scott >>> Let me know NOW who wants to travel on a bus on the Sunday and I will book the bus(es) when we have enough people to make the chartering viable. Sign up NOW, pay cash when you arrive at the Gathering. Donna Ezsol Vernon, British Columbia, Canada (My great, great, grandfather was a Cameron born Belevulin, and his father in Mannal, immigrated in the mid 1800's.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lastly, just in this morning!. . .another Tirisdeach! Hi Scott, Just found this web site. If the Gathering is still on I'll be there. My gr-gr-grandparents Archibald MCARTHUR and Margaret CAMPBELL settled in Artemesia Twp. Grey County, Ontario, Canada in the 1850's. Margot Murphy Aye, the Gathering is still on Margot. Glad you can make it! To all Gatherers, please feel free to advertise the Gathering in anyway whatsoever wherever you may reside in the world. Ross' advertising brought in several registrants. Thank you Ross. The response to those that have done their own advertising has been tremendous. It would be a shame for Tirisdeachs from all over the world not to learn of the Gathering until after it has come and gone. Do Your Best! Scott --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks so much for your quick response Scott. Anything anyone can do to assist the families concerned to make it through these next few months is very appreciated. Hi Hilda, First of all, welcome to the Tiree List! Secondly, I’m delighted to hear that you are connected to Farquhar McDougall. I have been looking at his family for sometime and wondering if he might fit into the larger picture of the MacDougalls at the East End of Tiree where my MacDougalls are from. At least he appears to start out in Scarinish in 1784, and my MacDougalls (McLukais’s) appeared soon thereafter in nearby Ruaig. I think we are talking about the same Farquhar. A small group of us are working on collecting all the raw data about MacDougall & McLucas ancestors in the Tiree & Coll & Mull OPRs and Censuses. Here’s what my notes say for the Farquhar in Tiree who looks like he may be yours: 1784 April 14 -- Alexander baptized, son of Farquhar McDougall, Scarinish 1786 June 18 -- Flora baptized, daughter of Farquhar McDougall, Haynish 1789 Feb 24 – Ann baptized, daughter of Farquhar McDougall, Manall 1791 Feb 20 – Catharene baptized, daughter of Farquhar McDougall, Manall I can’t find any of these children online except Catharene. To see her record, go to www.familysearch.org. Click the Search tab at the top of the page, then click International Genealogical Index in the left-hand column. Enter this info in the appropriate fields: Last Name—MacDougall, Region—Bristish Isles, Country—Scotland, County—Argyll, Batch Number—C115512. Click Search and you should get 4 results, one of which is Catharene. However, all four of those records are viewable if you live near a LDS FHC (Family History Center of the Church of Latter Day Saints). If you want to know more about viewing the records in person at a FHC, and I can post a few helpful hints for you. On my part, I’m curious to know what your Farquhar’s wife’s name was and when she passed away. Also, do you have any details about when he moved to Islay and why and where exactly he lived there? Or when and why he came to Tiree and where he came from? My MacDougalls are said to have come from Islay originally, but spent some time in Mull before moving to Tiree in the late 1700’s. Their name was originally McLucais or other variations of that surname. Hope this is the same Farquhar and we can exchange some more information. Cheers, Louise MacDougall Vancouver Island, Canada
I am a new lister and I am interested in finding out about the following: Farquhar McDOUGALL, who was born about 1760 on the Isle of Tiree. After the death of his wife, he moved to the Isle of Islay with two children, Alexander (birth date unknown) and Flora,( b.1786) Flora married Duncan McNIVEN 6 March 1814 at Kilarrow parrish, Islay I would appreciate any information that you might have on these folks. Thanks! Hilda Courter

Hallo Jean: I am afraid I am no help My family are the Browns that came over to Ontario at the time of the Potato famine I know there Mother was a Macarthur but not a Campbell. One of my clan on the Island Of Tiree was married to a Campbell her name was Mary Brown Campbell I believe he has since passed away that was in 1992 and he was very poorly at that time. Wow! 41 families are posted on the Isle of Tiree Gathering "Who's Coming" window that can be found at www.tireegathering.com . Thanks for the update Leanne! 41 families x 2.5 people, in fact in some cases more = 102.5 persons attending! This is terrific! No doubt the final number will be closer to 200 +. I have spoken to others that have assured me they are coming and I am sure there are many others yet to register. Please, if you have registered, great, if not please register today! 5 months today is the Gathering! The Gathering Committee needs to firm up very soon the numbers that will be attending in order that Gathering activities are finalized accordingly. Imagine, so much has been accomplished in a little over 12 months since Leanne Piper came up to me and said "Hey! I saw you name on the internet!". Leanne was referring to my name posted on the www.isleoftiree.net website. During that initial conversation that took place at our sons' (David Cameron and Bryan Piper) Cub meeting where I am a leader, one Tuesday night, Leanne made mention that her husband's family, Craig Piper, has connections to Tiree. At that time I suggested we organize an Isle of Tiree Gathering! Shortly thereafter Gordon Scott made mention to me in an email that a Archie MacKinnon had connections to Tiree. Coincidentally, Archie lives about 100 metres to the west of my front door and drives a VW van with "TYREE" license plates parked outside of his home which archives a fantastic Tiree room where Leanne, Archie, Archie's wife Gene and I first met. Thereafter Archie made reference to Ross McLean who also live in Guelph. "And now you know the rest of the story!" See you soon! Register today at www.tireegathering.com Thank you and kindest regards, Scott

I have an intresting telephone conversation with Barry MacDonald who is registering for the Gathering. I just me with Leanne this morning at our sons', David Cameron and Bryan Piper, basketball game. Leannes tells me many more have registered for the Gathering in the past week. No doubt more to follow. Check out the website for an updated list of who is coming. If you have registered, great, if not please do so today at www.tireegathering.com Cheers, Scott ..... 5 months to go! In the meantime, read on. There may be an intersting connection for our readers related to MacDonald / McCain / Lamont families. Barry does not have an email address, but I do have his mailing address. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Barry MacDonald > Fripp Island, South Carolina, USA / Glengarry, Ontario Found out about the Gathering via a cousin who was on the Tiree website. Descendant of Tiree > MacDonald Barry was referred from Duncan Grant who lives on Tiree to me after Barry was corresponding with Duncan regarding Barry's ancestors. Barry's MacDonald family ancestors (originally McCain...somewhere along the line there was a name change from McCain to MacDonald......h'mmmmm wonder why?) Barry's early ancestors married Lamont family. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello Tiree Listers, Do any of you have elderly Tiree or other Hebridean ancestors who emigrated after age 60 in the mid1800s or earlier? Im trying to find support for the oral story that a Tiree emigrant came to Canada at age 80. To date I have not had any success. The oral story is about Flory (Kennedy) MacDougall, widow of John MacDougall of Vaul, Tiree who emigrated to Canada about 1851 at age 80 with 3 of her sons. I thought I had found her in the Bentinck Township, Ontario 1851 Census, listed as age 80, but it turns out that this was apparently Flora (McKinnon) MacDougall, widow of Donald MacDougall (previously McLucais) of Mull. Also, it appears that this Flora was really only about 70, not 80. [And if anyone is related to either of these families, I would love to hear from you.] Below is a summary of a recent conversation on this subject that Ive had with Catriona Hunter, the Archivist at An Iodhlann, the Tiree Archive, (www.tireearchive.com or www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/~iodhlann/). It went something like this, where CH is Catriona and LM is myself: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- CH: Re longevity on Tiree, I don't have any statistics but have noticed over the last 20 years a number of people live to their late 80s and 90s. Longevity is a genetically inherited trait. LM: It appears a few elderly Hebridean folk did emigrate. What would you say about the older Tiree folk who emigrated? Was it extremely rare for someone age 80 to emigrate? How about age 70 or 75? CH: Off the top of my head, I would say it was very rare for people in their 70s and 80s to emigrate unless they were going to live with families who were already well established. A lot of the emigrants had a very tough life to start with. LM: About the aged emigrants, yes, tough life in the new country, and also a dangerous journey over the ocean. Could it be in those cases that the dangers of emigrating were less than the dangers of being left behind (i.e. where the rest of their family was emigrating and they perhaps thought there would be no one left in the Old Country to care for them as they aged even more?) CH: I think you're quite right about the reasons for older family members emigrating. They themselves probably wouldn't want to stay if all their children and grandchildren were going abroad. Also older people are a fund of knowledge and experience and would be very useful in lots of ways even if they weren't fit for hard work. LM: Thats a good point about the wisdom the old folk would have, not to mention their usefulness in doing the lighter work of the family like minding the house and the kids. CH: Re the elderly emigrating, it's very hard to quantify. Some of the passenger lists on emigration ships give ages and from that we can say that it was rare for people aged 60 and over to emigrate, especially in the first half of the 19th century. We do know of older people emigrating in the 1870s and 1880s, presumably to stay with their families who were by that time well established...the evidence is more anecdotal than concrete. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Listers, if you know of elderly Tiree/Hebridean ancestors who emigrated, Id appreciate it if you would post some information about them. Or, if you have further thoughts to add to the above conversation, please post those too. Thanks!
