    2. Scott Cameron
    3. Greetings. Here is an email, as per below, that just came in from David Sharron - Archivist - Bruce County Museum & Archives - Southampton, Ontario. Thank you very much David! David's email includes a number of websites that are of interest. No doubt www.ourroots.ca will be of benefit to everywhere in Canada. The "search" feature on each publicaton is amazing! In some cases "Tiree" pulled up a number of responses as did "Malcolm Cameron" - my, gr. gr. grandfather http://www.ourroots.ca/e/viewpage.asp?ID=894361&size=2 > first clerk of the North Bruce Baptist Church on the 10th of Bruce of Township! . . . Aye, I do come by my angelic qualities honestly! Everything is running along smoothly with respect to the "Tiree Trip to the Bruce" on Sunday, July 25, 2004. If you have booked your seat great, if not, get booking! Let me know. I have 20 seats left! Just in today .... Bonus > En route plans are underway from the wonderful folk of the Bruce Township Historical Society to put on a luncheon at one of the Community Centres. Let's keep our fingers crossed on this one! Details to follow! ..... "known for their famous luncheons and pies!" A visit to the Bruce County Museum & Archives is also on the agenda. Pertaining to the bus trip details are coming together pertaining to an "expert" from the Bruce to join us on the bus and / or informative information to be provided to work with in tandem to the information we have already at hand to go along with "Archie and Scott" tour guides! Aye, you don't want to be left out on this memorable bus trip! Let Scott know today how many seats you will require. Cheers, bye for now, Scott . . . see you soon . . . 9 weeks to go! www.tireegathering.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sent: Thursday, May 20, 2004 12:07 PM Subject: RE: Isle of Tiree Gathering Hello Scott, Here is the address for Norman Robertson's History of the County of Bruce - http://www.ourroots.ca/e/toc.asp?id=2914. It is an excellent source for information on the early settling of Bruce County and the table of contents is divided by towns and townships. So it should be easy to find locations along your travel route. Use the search field at www.ourroots.ca to find other digitized books on Bruce County that may hold info on the areas that you are interested in. http://www.ourroots.ca/e/toc.asp?id=2910 - Is a book called "Incidents of pioneer days at Guelph and the county of Bruce" by David Kennedy. http://www.ourroots.ca/e/toc.asp?id=3467 - Is a book on the Knox Church in Tiverton. Here are some other websites that may help you further: http://www.brucecounty.on.ca/museum/ - Museum and Archives page. http://www.chantryisland.com/ - Chantry Island and lighthouse information. http://www.sunsets.com/ - Tourism site for Kincardine, Paisley, Port Elgin, Southampton. http://www.brucecounty.on.ca/ - Bruce County webpage, includes maps. http://www.naturalretreat.com/ - Bruce County's tourism page - very good. I hope that this helps. David ________________________________ David Sharron Archivist Bruce County Museum & Archives P.O. 1. Tiree settlements / Indian land - Canada - etc. Vicki Morgan
    2. Scott Cameron
    3. Hi Scott, I too, know that Tirisdeachs were coming to Canada before 1847. My McPhaden ancestors came between 1820 and 1825. They brought a family of 6 with them, the youngest born on Tiree in 1820. They had a 7th child born in Canada in 1825. I have been unable to locate any other information about their travels - boat they came on, dates of travel, where they landed, who they knew in Canada, when they settled, etc. Usually the new immigrants went to stay with relatives or friends from home until they could establish their own homes, then served as hosts for those coming afterward. I'd like to ask if anyone can identify "Indian lands" and why immigrants would settle there. I'm assuming that it would be somewhere along the present Quebec/Ontario border, which would be close to the home settlement. One of this family was living on Indian lands. Could this be for a fur trading purposes? I certainly would like to be at the gathering but it just doesn't seem possible. I'll be thinking of you and hoping to hear all about it from some who are going. Vicki Morgan rmvm@mb.sympatico.ca

    1. Oral tradition of story telling - Gathering
    2. Scott Cameron
    3. As a result of Catriona Smyth's email to me who will be attending the Gathering. Catriona is coming from Edinburgh, Scotland. To those with stories to tell at the ceilidhs, here is an idea to get the ball rolling! Cheers, Scott -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have given a lot of thought to the suggestion of putting something together to mark the Gathering. After being in Tiree at Easter it dawned on me. Before I launch into my idea I need to tell you that I think that it has already been discussed, but I did not keep an eye on all the discussion, so I may well be not be up to date on what has been decided,so bear with me. The number of people I saw in Tiree and all the friends I saw reminded me that the oral tradition of story telling is still strong in Tiree (although there are not so many people who remember the stories). To mark the ocassion I think a collection of stories about Tiree or Tiree related things from the children of the emigrants would show the oral tradition did not dissapear. It can mean different things to different people just what you mean by a story telling. There are the stories of how the families left Tiree and settled, what things they did, said etc in Canada, how hard it was etc. Louise MacDougall could tell me that Sarah MacDougall her ancestor could only speak Gaelic. The family had the Oban Times sent out to them every month but someone had to read it and then translate it for her so she could get all the news from home. You get the idea. If there is to be a Gathering in Tiree then the other side of this could be done. All the Tiree families who had family emigrate could tell the stories from The Tiree point of view. You get the idea. Have you read the "Crofters Trail" it was written by a journalist who went round the Islands collecting stories about emigrtion and then went over to Canada and did the same there. He was able to put several families in touch with family in Scotland they did not know about through their telling of stories. I have not read "Crofters Trail", but expect I should. I did read Louise' story of her family....very amazing. The ceilidhs should include time for Louise and others so fortunate to share the stories of their ancestors pertaining to their lives on Tiree and emigration from Tiree to destinations beyond. (Scott) Let me know what you think and if I am several paces behind everyone else as I have a feeling you may already be organizing something like this. Catriona --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    3. Aye, thanks for the words of encouragement Margaret which also must be shared with Guelph's Isle of Tiree Descendants Leanne Piper, Archie MacKinnon and Ross McLean! With respect to your question Maraget . . . no doubt the Island of Two Harvests will be available for sale at the Gathering. I believe copies will be coming forth via someone from Tiree attending the Gathering. The four Guelphites are not involved in selling the books as we have enough tasks at hand. The lovely book which I highly recommend can be ordered via www.tireearchive.com . Check the website for all the details. Thanks for the gaelic update too Margaret, as per below! Hey folks, if you have not registered for the "Tiree Bus to the Bruce" please let me know ASAP. You can pay the day of. What is the price of the book on Tyree that is going to be made available at the gathering? I have just received a message from the Secretary of the St. Andrew's Society in Las Vegas to which Fred and I belong. Apparently at their last meeting they had Dr. Margaret McKinnon as their guest speaker. In this most recent message they gave the members the site for the preservation of the Gaelic language and other items as well. www.savegaelic.org The e-mail for the Secretary of the St. Andrew's Society in Las Vegas is Marie Cormier scotsldy@ix.netcom.com You are doing a great job along with your helpers, so hang in there, not long to go now. 1. A' Bhuain (The Harvest) - Isle of Tiree, Scotland Gathering - May 2006
    2. Scott Cameron
    3. Greetings, as per below is information as it relates to A' Bhuain (The Harvest) - Isle of Tiree, Scotland Gathering - May 2006. Cheers, Scott -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A' Bhuain (The Harvest) - Isle of Tiree, Scotland Gathering - May 2006 www.isleoftiree.net It has been estimated that there are around 38,000 people of Tiree descent around the world. Thousands of islanders emigrated from the mid-18th Century onwards, spurred on by the hope of better opportunities in Canada and many other countries including Australia and Patagonia. They represent a largely untapped source of strength for the island. Recently, aided particularly by the internet and facilities such as the Isle of Tiree Online News, there has been a surge in international interest in the island. This has been demonstrated by events such as the Tiree Gathering in Guelph, Canada this July 2004. www.tireegathering.com An Iodhlann, through its membership and website, has had an enthusiastic correspondence with over a hundred Tiree descendants, mainly from North America, Australia and New Zealand. www.tireearchive.com An Iodhlann aims to build on this interest by staging a major new exhibition entitled A' Bhuain (The Harvest) in the summer of 2006. This will focus on the stories of these emigrants' families who and where they are now, how their families got there from Tiree, and who can trace relatives still on the island. We aim to contact people of Tiree descent in one quarter of the world's countries. If we collect enough strong material we hope to publish a small book containing these stories. To run alongside this project we want to involve the Tiree community, its businesses and organisations in our own Tiree Gathering, also called A' Bhuain in 2006. This would be focussed around the third week in May and it would include ceilidhs, lectures, tours, regattas, and other festivals on the island. The island now has the necessary infrastructure -increasing amounts of quality accommodation a new hall, sea and land tours, activities like riding and sand yachting, and museums- for an event like this. Tiree Community Business have secured funding through the Seedcorn Fund on behalf of Tiree and Coll Gaelic Partnership and Marketing Tiree and Liz Lapsley has been employed to carry out a feasibility study from 4th May until August 31st 2004. This study will assess the viability of the project and seek to access and secure funding for a Project Officer to work from autumn 2004 to summer 2006. Anyone who has contact with any Tiree descendants overseas who feel they may have an interest please get in touch with Liz in order that she can assess the viability of holding a gathering on Tiree. She can be contacted at Tiree Community Business, Crossapol, Isle of Tiree PA77 6UH Tel No 01879 220520 or email at lizlapsley@aol.com. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lesley McLean -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.rootsweb.com/~onbcgs/ Bruce County Genealogocial Society Scottish Roots Review Workshop, Saturday, May 8th, 2004. Speakers are: Borders - Allan Scott, Colonsay - Mary McKay, Isle of Lewis - Diane Simpson, and Isle of Tiree - Scott Cameron. I attended the meeting with three other excellent speakers. I presented Isle of Tiree during a 45 minute presentation, table top display and question and answer session during the meeting which ran from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. I covered many topics of interest including the Gathering, History of Isle of Tiree, emigration arrangements, immigration, settlements and personal reflections of the Tirisdeach immigrants to Canada. There was much interest generated from those at the meeting about attending the Gathering. En route I visited the Lovat Cemetary where my gr. gr. gr. grandparents are buried. On the tombstone reference is made to "Native of Tyree, Argylshire, Scotland". I make mention of this as a comment was made to me recently that there was thought that Tyree / Tiree was not included on tombstones. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cheers, Scott Cameron www.tireegathering.com www.isleoftiree.net

    1. Tiree Reunion Bus Seats are filling up FAST ! . . . . only 28 seats left. . . .let me know today. Cheers, Scott
    2. Scott Cameron
    3. Greetings everyone! I don't know about you, but I am getting exhausted, so much to do, aside from the Gathering, and so little time! Anyways, moving forward, please, if you have not registered for the Gathering please do so today at www.tireegathering.com . Furthermore, please sign up for the Sunday bus trip TODAY. As of writing we have half the bus sold out. In order to keep the price down to $ 25 per person we need to sell 28 more seats or look to a smaller bus, i.e. 47 seats, however the price per ticket if left at only 28 seats will be higher than the $ 25.00 CDN, moreso closer to $ 40.00...but this is still excellent value. C'mon everyone.....let's fill the Tiree Bus! The time spent on the bus with people from Tiree, Scotland, UK, USA and Canada will be the experience of a lifetime! As of writing here who has signed up for the bus...no doubt more to follow! Lastly, as requested early, please email today any infomation pertaining to Tiree settlements that you ! are aware of pertaining to emmigration from Tiree. I am making a presentation on such in Bruce County on Saturday. Thank you to those who have already forwarded to me their amazing stories! In closing all the best! I am running the London, Ontario Marathon on Sunday hoping at the same time to qualify for the Boston Marathon 2005! Cheers, Scott Don't delay....if the Gathering Bus is going to fly on the Sunday, July 25, 2004 to the "Bruce" I need to hear from you ASAP please. The bus holds 56. We have 28 signed up so far. I need 28 more to fill bus # 1. There are more buses available if need be. $ 25.00 CDN per person. Thank you, Scott www.tireegathering.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Several Gatherers have written to me pertaining to the possibility of chartering a bus for the day. Originally the plan was to carpool / convoy those attending the Gathering to the "Bruce". However, today I investigated the cost of chartering a motorcoach bus complete with air conditioning, washroom, PA system, entertainment facilities, driver, "Scotty the Tour Guide", etc.. Denny's Bus Lines http://www.dennysbuslines.ca/Denny1/Welcome_to_Dex.html can accommodate our Gathering with three sizes of buses 47, 55, 56 passenger. Denny's has three 56 passenger buses which are the most modern and state of the art in their fleet. Regardless of the size of bus(es) we charter, for $ 25.00 CDN per person everyone can travel for up! to 15 hours on the Sunday to and from the "Bruce" in comfort! I have yet to book the bus. I will only do this when I have enough passengers who will commit to traveling on the bus in order to cover the costs. If this is something that you are interes! ted in please confirm NOW with the total number of people traveling in your party. The day will include leaving Guelph in the morning and returning in the evening. Our time is for us to maximize so long as accomplished within 15 hours. The trip to the "Bruce" is about 2 hours, likewise for the return to Guelph. While traveling we can enjoy a trip through backroads of where our ancestors settled in the Bruce, visits to cemeteries, tour of the Bruce County Museum and Archives http://www.brucecounty.on.ca/museum/ in Southa! mpton, Ontario http://www.sunsets.com/southampton/ , all along the beautiful sandy shores of Lake Huron which is rated as one to the top three sunset locations in the world. Time can be had for breaks, lunch and dinner, etc.. No doubt it will be a busy day, but most fun, relaxing and memorable. Please confirm today.

    3. Dear Scott, My contribution to the Tiree story is below. Jessie Flora McLean married William Elliott and their daughter Matilda Elliott (aka Tily or Lily) born August 1, 1883 was my grandma. This society represented a short-term response to a specific problem in a particular geographical area. The potato blight which brought on the Great Famine in Ireland earlier in the decade, struck the Isles and western Highlands in 1846. Sir Charles Trevelyan, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, became very interested in the problems of the Highlands. He properly saw emergency food supplies as a "useless palliative". He wrote to the Sheriff Substitute of Skye, Thomas Fraser, concerning the necessity of adopting a final measure of relief for the Western Highlands and Islands by transferring the surplus of the population to Australia. Trevelyan was joined in his concern and planning by two other distinguished civil servants, Sir John McNeill and Sir Thomas Murdoch. These three were the backbone of the HIES in London although it is clear that much credit for the plan belongs to Thomas Fraser. ......." ______________________________
