    1. RE: [SCT-ARL-TIREE] Parish of Tiree & Coll - COLL CHURCH RECORDS 1776
    2. Flora MacDonald
    3. Everyone, I have a copy of the 1776 church records for Coll if anyone is interested. I find Coll very difficult to get info on and 3 different ancestors of mine came to Canada from Coll. MacDonald, MacFadyen, MacKinnon. If anyone is researching these names in Coll, please drop me a line. Maybe we can build on each other`s info. And if anyone wants the Coll Church Records from 1776, let me know. Thanks Flora -----Original Message----- From: Keith Dash [mailto:dashjk@ozemail.com.au] Sent: June 4, 2004 6:32 AM To: SCT-ARL-TIREE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SCT-ARL-TIREE] Parish of Tiree & Coll Louise is right that Tiree & Coll were for many years included in the same parish. The minister was based in Tiree and an assistant was based in Coll. However, from what I have seen of photocopied pages or transcripts of the Tiree Parish Register of the 1700s and 1800s, I think separate registers must have been kept for Tiree and Coll. I have not come across any entries for Coll baptisms or marriages in the Tiree register. Also, statistics on population and local economy were recorded separately for Tiree & Coll. For instance, the population of Tiree was 1509 in 1755, 2416 in 1792, and 4687 in 1843; in contrast (perhaps because of a different approach to land tenure than that followed by the Duke of Argyll in Tiree?), the population of Coll remained relatively static - it was 1193 in 1755, 1041 in 1793, and 1409 in 1843. In 1843, the annual average of baptisms was 143 in Tiree and 44 in Coll; the annual average of marriages was 25 in Tiree and 6 in Coll. In 1843 the gross value of produce, of which the major commodities were potatoes, grains & pasture, was estimated at 10,609 UK pounds for Tiree and 4,419 UK pounds for Coll. These figures suggest that food production per head in Tiree was already much less (about 30% less) than that in Coll before potato blight struck in 1846, so it's no wonder our ancestors looked for a way out. _________________ Keith Dash Sydney, Australia ============================== You can manage your RootsWeb-Review subscription from http://newsletters.rootsweb.com/

    3. The Knowledge Base Gazetteer of Scottish Places - http://www.scan.org.uk describes Coll as ' the name of a civil parish from1866 until 1975. Prior to 1866, the island of Coll was in the parish of Tiree.' My ancestor, Flora McDonald, is recorded on her Australian Death Certificate in 1901 as having been born in Tiree, in 1815.( approx) Presumably, therefore, she may have been born on the Isle of Coll, as was her husband Allan McDonald. Can anyone comment on this please. It seems that prior to 1866, the recording of Tiree as a birthplace may mean either the island of Coll or Tiree. Jane Carpenter

    1. "Generations" CD Update
    2. Scott Cameron
    3. www.little-dreamer.net Recently I wrote to many pertaining to the "Generations" CD performed by Hughie McLean and Ashley McLean, both descendants of Tiree who have produced the wonderful CD comprised of a collection of traditional Gaelic songs www.little-dreamer.net . I recently received a copy of the CD that I ordered from Ashley. It is a wonderful treasure of songs! Thank you to the McLean family. Curiosity got the best of me and I wanted to know more about the history of the CD, moreso because of my interest in music, Gaelic, Tiree and my Cameron / McLean Tiree ancestors. As per below are details on such that you find to be of interest. No doubt you will enjoy the CD ... order one today! Cheers, Scott Cameron www.tireegathering.com www.isleoftiree.net -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Original Message ----- From: "hugh maclean" <hugh.maclean@btinternet.com To: "Scott Cameron" <j.scottcameron@rogers.com Cc: <ashley@little-dreamer.net Sent: Wednesday, June 02, 2004 5:52 AM Subject: "Generations" CD Hello Scott, I have been remiss not being in touch with you before now. You have sent several e-mails to Ashley and myself by now, and of course you have kindly copied me into your circulation in connection with the 'Tiree Gathering' of July. You are obviously very busy by now with many initiatives shaping up well for you. I do hope that your energy will be rewarded, and that all goes well when the time comes. Your e-mail of 15 May asked several questions, and I know that Ashley has responded. I will add what little I can. Tiree born, my brother Hughie MacLean, best remembered as OEoghann Beag¹, left his croft home in Salum, Tiree, with his wife May (MacArthur, born in Balephetrish, Tiree) in 1965, at the age of 37, taking their four young sons, Hugh-Charles, Donald, Duncan and Peter, to make a new life in Australia. They first settled in Tenterfield, New South Wales, later to move to Brisbane, where he and May live to this day. Initially, Hughie devoted all of his spare time in Australia to bagpipe tutoring and coaching pipe bands. Later, in Brisbane, he was with the Queensland Police Pipe Band, as an employee of that Force. In retirement, he still plays regularly. But he was also fond of singing and many in Tiree still remember his piping and singing at ceilidhs and other events. His grandson Ashley, 24, Duncan¹s son, also lives in Brisbane and is making his career in music. He has developed a keen interest in his grandfather¹s singing of Gaelic songs, and having recently fitted out a recording studio in his home, persuaded his grandfather to record a CD of Gaelic songs, with Ashley backing on the guitar. They have called the CD ³GENERATIONS². Even if, by Hughie's own admission, some tracks are better than others and to quote him: Advancing years are taking their toll', the CD is a nevertheless a very musical and imaginative collection of well-known songs that are popular to this day. Hughie and May have been back to Tiree several times, the last time being in 1997. Still young in heart, they keep well and are always delighted to have Tiree folk look in on them at their home in Brisbane. Ashley visited Tiree briefly in 1998 with his father, Duncan Scott, I have to apologize for my own woeful ignorance regarding detail on traditional Gaelic songs. As to the songs on the CD, only one, 'Lag nan Cruachan', is by a Tiree bard. Captain Angus Lamont was born in Lag nan Cruachan, Cornaigmore, Tiree, in 1844 approx. His fascinating story, and the song, are written up in the book 'Na Baird Thirisdeach' (The Tiree Bards) and I reproduce the text from that book as an attachment. All of the other songs are also very well known and widely recorded, and written about. 'Na Baird Thirisdeach', is that excellent collection of Tiree songs published in 1932, from public subscription, by the Tiree Association, and compiled and edited by the Reverend Hector Cameron. It will be long since out of print, but there are many copies still cherished throughout the world. I have found that the Google search engine is excellent in offering up links for virtually any Gaelic song, including most of those on the CD. However, the pursuit of sheet music or the words of songs via that route would of course take quite a long time, and I imagine that you do not have time, at this particular juncture. The <Isleoftiree.net> site, with its many linkages, is informative. I hope the above is of some help to you, Hughie, Ashley and I appreciate your keen interest in the CD and your interest in promoting it. I am a little "Hugh" confused. You are > Hugh Archie MacLean living in Inverness, Scotland? ..... were you born on Tiree? Your brother is > Hughie MacLean .... born on Tiree....now lives in Brisbane, Australia. Ashley is your "second" nephew. Ashley is Hughie's grandson...lives in Brisbane, Australia. Who is the Hugh performing with Ashley on the CD? Ashley's grandfather "Hughie" or Ashley's "second" uncle "Hugh" which would be yourself. Thanks again. However, the summary in your e-mail is correct: I am Hugh Archie MacLean, aged 71, born in Salum, Tiree, but living in Inverness, Scotland, for the last 35 years. I am a full brother of Hughie, who sings on the CD. Hughie MacLean (76) , who is on the CD, my brother, was born at Salum, Tiree, in 1928, and lives in Brisbane, Australia. Ashley, also on the CD, is the grandson of Hughie, and lives in Brisbane. Ashley was born in Brisbane, and lives there. (Ashley's father Duncan, Hughie's second son, was born in Tiree as were Duncan's three brothers, and the whole family emigrated to Australia in 1965) So, I am Ashley's grand-uncle, being his father Duncan's uncle. We do not use the term 'second-uncle' or 'second-nephew' but it presumably means the same as 'grand' ? Similar, or same-name, brothers and sisters in old Gaelic families was quite common. My brother Hughie was named after our father Hugh, but I was named after two bachelors Hugh and Archie MacFadyen, who gifted the croft at Salum to my father. We were at one time five sons, but only Hughie and I survive. The ancestral home of your own relatives, Willie and Angus, and the late Hugh, Barrapol, is part of the Salum croft, and the ruin is still just barely visible. My brother Hughie (Brisbane) and Willie (Balinoe) are enduring friends over many years because of their shared love for piping. Willie is of course, like Angus, one of the best authorities in Tiree on genealogy and on the Tiree diaspora. I got involved in the CD business simply because I was geographically well placed, as a regular visitor to Tiree, and keen that as many people as possible in Tiree, and of Tiree connection, got to hear about it. Best regards, Hugh Archie, Inverness, Scotland ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    1. Coll Parish vs Tyree Parish
    2. Dear Jane Carpenter, Yes, it is somewhat possible that your Flora McDonald, born circa 1815 in Tiree, was born on the Isle of Coll. You're right that Coll was part of the Parish of Tyree at that time. The Film Notes for from the LDS website http://www.familysearch.org, say: "The Parish of Coll (located about 2-3 miles northeast of the island of Tyree) was annexed by the Parish of Tyree between 1618 to 1866." In other words, during the whole time period of the Tyree OPR--the Old Parish Registers--from 1766 to 1856, Coll was part of the Parish of Tyree. In 1855, Parish Registration was replaced by Civil Registration. The two films cited are: #1041081 -- Tyree Baptisms and Marriages #1041082 -- Coll Baptisms and Marriages Each film can be rented separately and viewed at a Family History Center anywhere in the world. However, with a popular name like Flora McDonald, unless you have more information, it will be difficult to make a choice. A search on the website above will show many Flora MacDonalds born circa 1815 in the Parish of Tyree. The parents names are given on the website, but not the birth location. You would have to order in the film to see the location of the birth on the island. Usually the location is the name of the township. Interestingly, there are a couple Coll entries that appear for 1814 and 1815 when doing a search of Flora McDonald on the above website. These entries cite "Coll Parish", but if you look further at the entry, you will see that they were not extracted from the Church of Scotland (Presbyterian) Parish Records. They are entries submitted by an LDS church member from personal files. So, although "Coll Parish" would be incorrect, it's probably safe to guess that the contributor meant that their Flora was actually born on the Isle of Coll. All that being said, since you indicate that Tiree as a place of birth appeared on Flora's Australian Death Certificate in 1901, it seems more likely that her family would have given the name of the island where she was born, rather than the Parish. I would think that this situation would be similar to carving a birthplace on a tombstone, and, in the latter case, it would be the island, not the parish, that the family would be remembering. Not sure that any of the above will help you at all, but perhaps it will be of use to someone else wondering about the elusive Parish of Coll. Good Luck! 3. As received from Clan Cameron - Ontario Branch. I had the pleasure of meeting Lochiel in August, 2000. The meeting was most memorable. Lochiel was a wonderful man. Regards, Scott -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It is with deep sorrow that I must tell you the Chief of Clan Cameron, Donald Hamish Cameron of Lochiel has died. This man, Chief among Chiefs, will be remembered as one of Scotland's greatest Chiefs. He will be missed, honored and credited with bringing our Clan to its present stature as one of the most highly respected within the Scottish family of Clans. While he died on Wednesday, the family asked me to delay announcement until they were ready to make it public. Donald Andrew informed me that we could make the announcement of his death public now. Donald Angus and Donald Andrew, along with other members of the family, have hastened to Achnacarry to be with Lady Cameron who is, understandably, emotionally distraught. Please send your condolences either by mail or email as soon as you can. The funeral is to be held on Friday, June 4, 2004 at the St. Andrew's Church in Ft. William. Official announcement of his death will also appear on the Clan Cameron Website www.clan-cameron.org Respectfully, Donald Cameron Commissioner --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Although, we haven't officially put out a call for all family trees yet, I will give you a preview of where we are heading: In this Project we will be attempting to make available as many family trees as possible in a variety of forms, to as many researchers as possible, at the Gathering and before it and after it, as follows: 1. Computer Database: of all submitted electronic files (GEDCOMS). 2. Charts: "drop down" 1-page style, physically displayed on the walls. 3. Histories: 1-page family stories. 4. Paper Files: for trees which we do not receive in the above formats. 5. Webpages: to search the computer database and to display the Charts and Histories on the Internet. As you can imagine, several of us are working furiously behind the scenes to get as much of this in place as possible before the Gathering. The details about how to submit your family tree and history to the Project should be available within the next 10 days. We will also be inviting people to submit their 1-page histories simultaneously to this List for the benefit of all researchers. To prevent overwhelming the List, it has been suggested that we do a Roll Call by Clan name in order that the stories post here in a staggered fashion. 1. Tiree Gathering Request
    2. Valerie Bowden
    3. I am the GG Grandaughter of Hector McLEAN (1806) and Ann BROWN (1816) who emigrated from Tiree to Ontario in 1849 on the Charlotte. Living in England I am sadly unable to attend the Tiree Gathering. However I am wondering if some kind person who is able to attend would be able to take my family tree (4 pages of A4 paper) along with them? My prime search is for my Grandmother Matilda (aka Tily / Lily) ELLIOTT born 1883 Ontario and who abandoned my 3yr old father at the House of Refuge in Walkerton in 1903. The reason she gave was that she had to 'hire out' to make a living so she left Walter there and he was eventually 'fostered' by another family. She and her mother Jessie McLean Elliott then seem to vanish! If my tree could be displayed on the wall somewhere it might just help me make that vital link! If anyone is able to help at all that would be wonderful. Best wishes Valerie Elliott

    2. Dear Listers, Since there are quite a few Camerons attending the Tiree Gathering in Guelph, this article will be of interest to many on this List. Even though the article is not about Tiree, and even if you're not a Cameron, it is interesting reading as a bird's eye view of one Clan in Scottish history, especially the prophecy, the bell tolling, and the means to economic success including why Sir Donald, as the eldest son of the 25th Chief, was not born at the Clan seat of Achnacarry. Condolences to all Camerons, Louise MacDougall Vancouver Island, BC Canada -------------------------------------------------- Leader of Clan Cameron Dies: Wednesday, May 26, 2004 93-year-old Colonel Sir Donald Hamish Cameron of Lochiel, the 26th chief and captain of Clan Cameron died peacefully at the clan's spiritual headquarters of Achnacarry Castle, near Fort William. He is survived by his wife, four children, 14 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Sir Donald, who was known simply as Lochiel, was made a Knight of the Thistle by the Queen in 1973. He was commissioned into the Lovat Scouts in 1929 and served with them during WW2, rising to the rank of major. He was Lord Lieutenant of Inverness-shire from 1971-85. The Clan Cameron, which takes its name from the Gaelic cam-shron or "crooked hill", can trace itself back to medieval times. The first Chief found in historical records is Domnhuill Dubh - "Black Donald" (the 11th Chief) - who in 1311 fought as a vassal of the Lord of the Isles at Harlaw. Thereafter, Camerons distinguished themselves at battles from Bannockburn to Prestonpans, and none showed more fighting spirit than their leaders. The 17th Chief, Sir Ewen Cameron, killed a soldier of the Cromwellian General Monck by tearing out his throat with his teeth, and it was to Lochiel that Charles Edward Stuart later looked when he landed in Scotland. Cameron men guarded the Prince on the night before Culloden, and Lochiel's estates were among the first to be forfeited after the rising failed; his youngest son was the last man to be executed as a Jacobite, in 1753, after the Act of Indemnity. The Chief himself, however, earned the name "Gentle Lochiel" for having spared Glasgow when the Stuart army retreated north, and in gratitude the citizenry decreed that the bells of the Tolbooth should be rung whenever his descendants passed through the city. They were rung three times for Sir Donald who, though a chartered accountant by profession, had also inherited a goodly measure of his forebears' martial prowess. Having campaigned through the Second World War with the Lovat Scouts, he later commanded a territorial battalion of the family regiment, the Cameron Highlanders, first raised in 1793 and substantially enlarged by his grandfather in 1914. His principal concern, though, was the management of the Cameron estates, which by shrewd husbandry he increased to 130,000 acres, the largest landholding in Britain of any commoner. Cameron country is the wooded hills and glens around Fort William, north-west Scotland, and a prophecy holds that the Camerons will keep their land as long as there is snow on Ben Nevis. In earlier times, there were hot disputes over ownership of the area around Loch Arkaig between the Camerons and Clan Chattan. In 1396 King Robert II presided over a melee at Perth between 30 champions of each side, at the end of which the last Cameron escaped with his life by swimming the River Tay. Sir Donald had no such problems with the neighbours, and the four pillars of agriculture, stalking, forestry and holiday lets kept the estate profitable. Lochiel was one of very few landowners to have greater holdings than those of his ancestor a century before. He was also a most diligent Chief to his clan members, regularly travelling to gatherings in countries such as Australia, where more than 2,000 Camerons came to meet him. Although he thought such large convocations worked better abroad than in Scotland (where he felt there was less interest in ancestry), he welcomed any Cameron who called at Achnacarry, his seat at Spean Bridge, Inverness-shire, which stood beside the castle burned down by the Duke of Cumberland in 1746. In 1956 he hosted only the second great gathering of the clan there since the '45, and in 1989 another to mark his golden wedding. He also converted a former post office on the estate into the clan museum. Lochiel was a man whose considerable charm was matched by his unflagging energy and his high ideals of service to his clansmen and the people of Scotland. There was no finer example of a Scottish laird, and in the red of his Cameron kilt he very much looked the part as well as performing it. Donald Hamish Cameron, the elder son of Sir Donald Cameron, 25th Chief and Captain of Clan Cameron, was born on September 12 1910 at Buchanan Castle, Loch Lomond, the former home of his mother, Lady Hermione, the second daughter of the 5th Duke of Montrose. He was not born at Achnacarry as the castle had been let for the grouse season. Since 1800 the eldest son of every Lochiel has always been christened Donald. Both his father and grandfather had married the daughters of dukes; his father was also the first Knight of the Thistle not to be either a peer or a baronet. The Younger Lochiel was educated at Harrow and Balliol College, Oxford, and came of age in 1931. To mark this, the tenantry presented him with two gifts for the stalker: a Rigby telescopic rifle and Ross monocular prism glasses. In 1929 Cameron had joined the Lovat Scouts, and although he then trained as an accountant, he kept up his military skills; and when war came he fought with the regiment, notably in Italy. By 1945 he was a lieutenant-colonel. He was awarded the Territorial Decoration in 1944. He faithfully kept up his connection with the Army in the years after, and as well as honouring his links with the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders (as they became) - serving as Honorary Colonel of the 4/5th Battalion from 1958 to 1967 - he was also Honorary Colonel of a territorial battalion of the Queen's Own Highlanders (the amalgam of the Camerons and Seaforths) from 1967, and of a battalion of the 51st Highland Volunteers. He was appointed Colonel in 1957 and awarded a military OBE in 1954. His father died in 1951, and the new Lochiel returned from London to live at Achnacarry which, during the war, had been used as a commando training centre and had been badly damaged by fire. Once back in Scotland, he was soon offered a good number of part-time jobs in public life. From 1959 to 1964 he was chairman of the Scottish Area of the British Railways Board. He was also for many years a director of the Save & Prosper Group, of the Royal Bank of Scotland, and of Scottish Widows, of which he was chairman from 1964 until 1967. He was a Crown Estates Commissioner from 1957 to 1969; president of the Scottish Landowners' Federation from 1979 to 1984; and Lord Lieutenant of the County of Inverness from 1971 until 1985. Lochiel was appointed CVO in 1970 and a Knight of the Thistle in 1973. He married, in 1939, Margaret Gathorne-Hardy, a niece of the 3rd Earl of Cranbrook; they had two sons and two daughters. The new Clan Chief is the eldest son, Donald Angus Cameron, Younger of Lochiel, born in 1946. -----------------------------------------------

    1. Aye, bring what you can everyone......

    3. Aye, bring what you can Sandra and everyone. There are plenty of tables. The Isle of Tiree Descendants Gathering started as a very tiny seed, but has grown into an immense family tree! Regardless of the size of one's contribution each will be a unique blossom with a learned story to be shared with many and treasured for many years with wonderful discoveries to be passed from one generation of our family to another! Aye, and don't forget to include you special contribution for your ceilidh! Cheers, Scott www.tireegathering.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Scott: Re tables for display: Unfortunately, I have a pitiable amount of info to display but would like to in the hope of perhaps making some connections and learning more. However, if tables are in short supply, then having one is not hugely important to me. Thanks, Sandra Johnston -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sent: Tuesday, May 25, 2004 2:44 PM Subject: Tiree Gathering Update - 9 weeks to go! Greetings everyone! 13 seats left on the bus. If you want a seat let me know ASAP. Ticket prices $ 30.00 CDN per person. This morning I received an email from Archie MacKinnon as per below. Archie makes mention of some good housekeeping rules and suggestions for the Gathering displays. Please read over and take heed to Archie's wisdom. Let me know if you are going to require a table to display your belongings, handouts, etc. Bring what you can regardless of its size, tables are available. Thanks, Scott www.tireegathering.com 9 weeks to go! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Scott, I think we need specific information for participants at the Friday and Saturday morning sessions. They need to have the following asap: A layout for displays and exhibits at Harcourt. I suggest that we reserve the small room for the Tiree Interconnections Project and focus the displays on Families (Listed by Clans attending). The room would be the area for seeing VCR's, slide shows, computer access, copying machines, etc. (TV / VCR will be available....on site copier / computer may not be available...you may wish to bring your own laptop. x-Scott) Recall that Russ and Louise want a full wall for the family trees. The auditorium will be the location for as many exhibits and displays that we can manage and still seat around 150+. Each person bringing materials to the Gathering needs to know where to put the materials which should be clearly labelled with a name and " Do not remove". Handouts should be labelled as " Please Take". Tables should have a " Reserved For.........." sign so that minimum time is wasted in putting up the displays. I think all participants should be reminded to bring something f! or sharing with the possibility of leaving some items for the museums or " The Tiree Emigrant's Kist" Persons making presentations should remember their time limits and may have to restrict their use of AV to audio only given the problem of darkening the room ( or is that not a problem ? >> the rooms can be darkened x-Scott). Time is slipping by fast. Yours aye, Archie --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
