Good evening, SKS recently identified from George Black's Scottish Surnames an additional ancient family of McCalls in Bute, M'Kails and M'Kaills. This is cross referenced to ancient McCalls of Dumfries-shire, which identifies Robert M'Kawele in 1370. M'Kerlie in "Lands and Owners of Galloway" on page 169 mentions Malcolm M'Kaill of Cantyre (or Bute) in 1306 fighting at Loch Ryan and the MacDougalls capturing and beheading him. Earlier writings mention Edgar M'Kaill or M'Kawele named Earl in Girvan by King David. Coming from 190 AD in Armagh after the assassination of the King of Lenister? and famine, MacCathmhaoil are raiding into Galloway and Wales. Around 450 AD there is a split of MacCathal of Hy and the Cholla Brothers who move to Argyll and later become MacColl and the MacCathal are listed as Kings in Connacht up to time of Edgar in Girvan. I'm trying to find the connection from Connacht to Ayrshire with King David. In a book on Castles in Scotland, I find several Land Grants to Irish Lords by King David, but haven't found this connection. Does SKS have any info?
