Katrina Your question about the distance between Inveraray and Kilmelford and how one would get from one to the other is one which is not answered by looking at a modern map because in this part of the world the modern roads actually take the long way round. Before the age of the motor car. From Kilmelford one would have gone across country (There is still a driveable road) to Loch Awe which one would have crossed by a ferry, which then existed, to Portinnisherrich and taken the route over the hills which was once well-used both by those walking and those on horseback to Inveraray. At a guess the distance by this route is between 20 and 25 miles as against the 45+ miles via Lochgilphead or the 50+ miles via Taynuilt on the modern roads. Frank Bigwood
