I'm having a huge difficulty getting further back in time with my McIntyres. I had thought I had it narrowed down but some details kindly provided by Les Horn made me think again. Henry McIntyre born 19.2.1863 to Anne McIntyre at Arkland, Inveraray, father unknown. I have a copy of the 1891 census extract for Inveraray and mother and son are living at Cross Houses Inverarary. Henry's age is given as 29 which is correct for a Feb 1863 birth and Ann's is given as 56 which (if correct) makes her birth 1835-ish. The 1891 census also had Ann listed as being born at Inverary, I found a Anne McIntyre baptised 1836 Inverary to Archibald McIntyre and Christian Sinclair. Yippee, I thought, I've got her. Wrong!!! >From the details Les sent that Ann McIntyre married a John Lorimer in 1875 so she couldn't be my Ann living at Crosshouses, unmarried in 1891. So, I got out my purse and paid the gods at Scotland's People and came up with the following:- Death of Anne MacIntyre 29.10.1904 aged 68 years (1836 birth +/-), single, father Malcolm McIntyre shepherd, mother Janet McIntyre ms Blue, at Kilmelford, Argyll, informant Archibald McIntyre, brother. 1901 census Kilmelford. Duncan McIntyre head single 57 Ag Lab Archibald McIntyre brother single 61 Fisherman Ann McIntyre sister single 63 Housekeeper I did go through all the Ann McIntyre's I could find in the censuses and death records and this one is the only one found that was unmarried and age given was approximately the correct age for Henry's mother. I also knew that she had died before Henry married in 1907. (I did find one other Ann McIntyre who married a Malcolm McIntyre, but the marriage took place before Henry's birth.) So, here's my questions. Is it feasible that the former house servant who gave birth to Henry in 1863 is one and the same as the Ann McIntyre who died up in Kilmelford. Logistically, how easy was it to travel between Kilmelford and Inveraray and could a single woman have travelled to Arkland to give birth to give birth to her illegitimate son? And lastly, if the Ann mentioned above is 'mine', then does anyone know where Carradale is? (The 1901 census states that this is where Ann and her brother Archibald were born). Katrina
Katrina Carradale is on the east (mainland facing) coast of Kintyre between Saddell and Skipness (therefore in "Saddell and Skipness" parish).
