Such a service has not=20 previously been available, and by providing access to more recent=20 events it addresses a problem often encountered particularly by new =20 researchers into their family history researchers who hit a block=20 with their grandparents' generation. The Scots Origins Sighting Service will be complemented by an=20 improved facility, available only from Scots Origins, for searching=20 the International Genealogical Index (IGI). The Scottish records in=20 this index have helpful additional fields to assist resolve=20 ambiguities in identifying events where the parties have common=20 names, but the IGI also has some weaknesses in respect of place name=20 searching which the new facility overcomes. Scots Origins Sighting Service The Scots Origins Sighting Service allows users to order via the web=20 details of entries in the old parish registers and the statutory=20 registers for Scotland of births and marriages from 1700 up to 1990=20 and deaths from 1855 to 1990, plus details of entries in the 1861 and=20 1871 censuses. The transcribed details, which include all the key=20 information contained in the original entries, are emailed to the=20 user within 5 working days.=20 The cost of this service is =A38 (approx. US$12) per "sighting"=20 request.=20 Comparison with other services. =20 The General Register Office for Scotland does not provide online=20 indexes to records later than 1901 in the case of births, nor does it=20 take orders online for the later records, but only by phone or post=20 for hard copies of the register entries (extracts). Even with the=20 online indexes, users often cannot identify the relevant event due to=20 lack of detail in the index records. The Scots Origins Sighting=20 Service gets round these issues and, while it does not presently=20 offer hard copies of the original entries, it is considerable cheaper=20 than the GROS service. The latter costs =A316 for extracts ordered=20 over the web or =A313 for orders placed by post or phone =96 and the=20 delivery delay can be several weeks. Although an increasing=20 proportion of GROS records will become available online in digitised=20 image form, records of births less than 100 years ago or marriages=20 less than 75 years ago are unlikely to be available on the web,=20 making the Scots Origins Sighting Service of especial value to family=20 history researchers who can often be stuck just two generations back. Scottish Place Name Database=20 This free service allows users to identify the county and parish=20 within which particular places are located. This information can be=20 a great help in tracking down source documents, and will be an=20 invaluable adjunct to the new Scots Origins Sighting Service. Users=20 may search on arbitrary place names, including those of streets or=20 even houses. This facility will be particularly helpful to those=20 wanting to find someone on either the 1861 or 1871 census. The=20 database has been based upon 1881 census data, with the agreement of=20 the General Register Office for Scotland and the Church of Jesus=20 Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Enhanced and FREE access to OPR and Statutory Register index data Our improved interface to the IGI will allows searching of the=20 Scottish records directly by parish, which is not possible on the=20 Family Search web site. For the period up to 1875 over 90% of the=20 birth and marriage records which are in the GROS indexes are also=20 within the IGI. In the IGI you will often find both birth date and=20 baptism date included, while the GROS index almost invariably has=20 only one or the other. And for records of births in the 1855 to 1875=20 period, the IGI almost invariably has the parents' names, in contrast=20 to the GROS index where this is rarely the case. =20 For further information about this service, please contact=20 jane@origins.net ------------------------------------------------------- This message comes from the Scots Origins Discussion Group, sponsored by Scots Origins (www.origins.net), the official website for family history information from Scotland, to reply send an email to scots-origins@yahoogrou= ps.com To unsubscribe send a blank email to: scots-origins-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.= com =20 Your use of Yahoo!
