Duncan COLQUHOUN was born in the parish of Muckairn 1 June 1764. He married Anabella CAMPBELL about 1783 in Muckairn. Malcolm COLQUHOUN b. Muckairn 12 June 1788. Married Ann McCRONE 7 May 1809 in Barony Parish, Glasgow. Does Muckairn church still exist and does anyone know whether COLQUHOUN graves may be found there? Any help much appreciated. I will be in Scotland briefly in May and would like to check there if they do. Mary Hamilton
Hello Mary Muckairn Parish Church is located in the village of Taynuilt, near the shore of Loch Awe & at the Oban end of the Pass of Brander, in the shadow of Ben Cruachan. A beautiful village in a beautiful part of Scotland. My maiden name was MAC NIVEN and aside from my father who was born in Cameron parish, Fife, all of my Mac Niven forbears came from the parish of Muckairn. My ggg grandfather married a CAMPBELL: Duncan MAC NIVEN, a woodcutter, b c1791 Muckairn, d between 1851-54, m 14 Dec 1811 at Aird, Muckairn Parish Ann CAMPBELL of Jerachan, b c 1794 Muckairn, d 15 July 1870 [aged 77] Aird, Muckairn Ann CAMPBELL's parents were John CAMPBELL, weaver of Jerachan, and Ann MC GREGOR. Unfortunately I don't know where Jerachan is/was but maybe someone on the list could assist me please. I have a 56 page book called Taynuilt; Our History that has no publication date but I think that it probably came out in the late 1960s. It gives an interesting background on the village & its history but unfortunately it doesn't have an index so I can't immediately spot whether or not there is any reference to Colquhouns in it. I have a photo of a gravestone that I took in the Muckairn church yard in 1978. Quite a few of the letters are covered with lichen but with the aid of a magnifying glass I can read the following inscription but don't quote me on it: "Sacred to the memory of Archibald CAMPBELL born at Balindore 1809?? died 10th? December 1899? also his wife Mary MC CALL? [MC CAILL?] ? died 12?th July 1899? after 82? years" Balindore is a few miles to the SW of Taynuilt. My gg grandfather John MAC NIVEN b c 1791 Muckairn, the son of Duncan MAC NIVEN as above, m 5 February 1848 at Muckairn Parish Church Mary MC COLL, b c 1828 'Balindore', Muckairn, d 14 Nov 1902, 'Coillendarroch', Glencruitten [just out of Oban]. I see that you have a New Zealand e-mail address. Our place, on the outskirts of Palmerston North, is called 'Balindore' and the dairy farm that my late parents had near Edgecumbe, in the Bay of Plenty, was called 'Balindore'. My brother did "reverse migration" in 1990 and lives just out of Cupar in Fife - his house is also called 'Balindore'. So that name from Muckairn parish has been carried on in another part of the world. Please contact me off list if I can be of any further help. Slainte.
