Keep in mind that "N" was perfectly legitimate. It was the abbreviation for Nic, the feminine of Mac/Mc, and meant "daughter of" in Gaelic. My own great-great was listed as Isable, and was Isabella in later life. My MacNivens were listed in at least one census as Niven. And my great-gran MacDougall was born MacDougald, sometimes spelled McDougal, McDugald, MacDugald, etc. Happy hunting! Sheila
