    3. Hello again Argyll List, I posted my surname interests yesterday, but I left one out. I just recently discovered that my great great great grandmother was Mary HOUSTON (sometimes looked like "Austin" on some documents) who married a McGregor. Their son, Dugald McGregor, was born abt. 1849 at Taynish Farm by Tayvallich, Argyll. HOUSTON not a local name, it seems. My Dad has a theory that it might be English, from a servant perhaps brought up from England by a laird to look after his Scottish household?? Anybody got any other theories or clues? Thankyou! Mary

    1. [ARGYLL] McCallum & Wording Assistance Please
    2. Lois Masters
    3. Hello - I am new to the list and am desiring to link with anyone doing research on the McCallum surname in Argyll. I believe that my Peter McCallum born about 1788 (who married Marion Robertson 24 Feb 1809 in Falkirk, Stirling and whose children were baptized in Stirling) was very probably from Argyll. The marriage record reads: Peter McAllam and Marion Robertston both in this parish irregr (Lines dated 24th Feb 1809) ------- If the information on the marriage record provides any significant clues, would you please advise me. For example what does "lines dated....." mean? What is "irregular"? --------------- The first son of Peter and Marion was named Daniel. The girl who is possibly the first daughter was named Margaret. However, there are several year gaps wherein children were likely born who were not recorded on the Presbyterian Church records. Thanks for any assistance you may be able to provide. 3. Mary I too have a g.g.g. grandmother, Mary HOUSTON, but not the same as yours - she married John SMILLIE and may have lived in Ireland. Another g.g.g. grandmother, Ann HOUSTON (I do not know whether or not she was related to Mary) came from Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, where a number of HOUSTON references can be found. Black's "Surnames of Scotland" states that the name is of territorial origin, from the old barony of that name in Lanarkshire. (The holders of that land were originally called PADUINAN.) The entry in Black's refers additionally to HOUSTONs (and spelling variants thereof) in Ayrshire, Caithness, Inverness-shire, Renfrewshire and Ross-shire, but not (as far as I can see) Argyll.
